Is Safari the only user-respecting browser left?
>>
>>52168368
No web enabled software operates in a vacuum. There will always be some information sent back to developers to see how their software is behaving in different environments.

This botnet meme is worn out and should be left behind in 2015, the literal meaning of botnet is a collection of zombie computers controlled a by 3rd party with malicious intent. Google and Microsoft at most sell your data to advertisers which is a dead end because everyone uses some form of ad blocker.

Simply FUD.

>Google and Microsoft at most sell your data to advertisers

This is one of the worst memes that keeps getting spouted by idiots.

Google and Microsoft don't sell your data. They collect your data. They then use the fact that they have that data to get advertisers to pay more money because Google/Microsoft can offer the ads to people who are more likely to appreciate them.

If they actually gave away your info they would be out of business in a week. Their success depends entirely on making sure that nobody has your information except themselves.

So while Google is certainly harvesting a fuckton of information on you, you can be absolutely certain that third parties aren't getting their hands on it.
>>
>>52168682
>you can be absolutely certain that third parties aren't getting their hands on it.
The same is not true of every other piece of information collected on you.
Google and microsoft make money from having an advertising distribution platform, not from having unique data about you.
You see, data brokers such as bluekai and axcziom buy and sell data. Bluekai knows more about you than google does, and you can be sure that they augment google's income.
What you need to understand is that there is a data market. Google IS the advertiser. They're an advertiser that also collects data.
Advertiser first, data collection second. Data brokers are data collection first and second. They buy it from google, microsoft, yahoo, and smaller companies. They push it all together and build profiles on people, and sell these profiles to anyone with the money to pay for them.
>>
>>52168732
>Google and microsoft make money from having an advertising distribution platform, not from having unique data about you.
>They buy it from google

You seem to be confused about how Google actually makes money. Google builds unique profile on a users, then uses the fact that they have that information to increase the value of their advertising network. People pay more to advertise with Google because they know that Google has enough information on users to make sure the ads are seen by people who will be interested in the product. They don't sell your data to third parties (It would undercut their own business), though they may use third parties to help build their own services.

>>
>>52168917
The NSA does not pay for the information. They take it, with or without the company's permission.
Given that knowledge, where does google's money come from?
Why do they spend money on collecting data?
>>
>>52168951
The internet was created by the U.S. military was it not? Who pays for the Internet? AOL?
>>
>>52168810
All the data in the world doesn't matter if you can't actually deliver the ads.
Google has profiling and connects the ads. That's how they demand value on their advertisments.
The data isn't as valuable as the ability to connect to to what a person sees.
So for example if I had all the data google has on, say, everyone in texas, it wouldn't give me the same price on adverts as google becaues I don't have a platform to connect the ads to the data I have on Mr. X from texas. I don't have the ability to send Mr X the ads about rectal cream apart from indirectly. Google and facebook and such have these direct abilities.

the data is still valuable since you can sell it to people who have this direct advertising ability.
>>
>>52168973
You lost me. Google collects information because they can use it to increase the value of their advertisements.
ISPs run the hard structure of the internet because they get lots and lots of money from the people who pay for access to the network.

YOU pay for the internet. Through ISPs. And sometimes indirectly through taxes for intercontinental connections and backbones. Universities also help build it, and they get the money for that from college fees.

Google, MS, whatever relevant government you pick, none of them should be able to spy on me and then have people like you tell me that it's okay because they don't 100% literally sell my data

I understand that it's always on and someone is always watching. When you google asian porn on a fresh device and then you get ads telling you where you can find a hot korean wife, when you use in browser netflix and then Windows suggests you download the netflix app, someone is always watching. It's basically first world law that people should be free from being spyed on yet here we are, american companies hording data and the US government able to send anybody they want off to a federal prison
>>
>>52169117
Retard
>>
>>52169139
How?
>>
>>52168976
>The data isn't as valuable as the ability to connect to to what a person sees.

That's why the data they have on users is so valuable. People pay more to advertise with Google because when they run the ad on rectal cream, Google will send that ad to people who've researched symptoms that can be solved with rectal cream. The ability to display ads is great, but it's worth far, far less than the ability to display ads to the RIGHT people.
>>
>>52169117
It's important to understand who is watching and how the data is collected, and what kind of uses and markets the data passes around on.

For example; I've been talking about how data uniqueness isn't important to data; IE data has no problem trading data for data it has no knowledge of to increase the value of its advertisement delivery platform.
Data brokers like Bluekai and Azxciom (I mention these guys a lot) know almost as much about you as google does. Companies you've never heard of have your data too!
Even if google managed to resist the NSA, the data brokering that goes on behind the scenes means that the NSA can get the same data from other companies.
That's what the latest pro-spying legislation from obama was- it was about easy access to the data stored by bluekai. Extensive online histories accessible without warrant or even human intervention.

All I'm really saying is that you're much more fucked than you think you are.
>>
>>52169158
>thinks google made $392 billion selling ads for rectal cream.
>>
>>52169158
This is my point.
Google having unique data isn't as important as google's ability to use that data.
So they can share the data because it isn't as valuable to other companies, and selling the data augments google's bottom line.
>>
>>52169171

Google's bottom line is being the only place advertisers want to contact when they want an ad run online. Helping third parties by selling away the biggest thing that gives them value simply doesn't make any sense. It's pure conspiracy FUD.
>>
>>52169248
Google is a machine shop. Selling data about how to fix cars doesn't help people without machine shops.
And google has the best machine shop.
>>
>>52168167
You can turn the targeted ads off and then if you turn them back on you can see it fumbling to build a profile again, showing you Spanish ads and women's underpants etc.

When the ads stop being optional I'll be worried.
>>
I remember I called Chrome a botnet on twitter a couple years ago and a fairly tech-savvy friend of a friend told me to stop spreading FUD. He was clearly a Chrome fanboy and couldn't deal with what I was saying. I got pretty mad and just blocked him. I was that level of mad where you know nothing you say will work out okay, so I just decided not to deal with it.

Also I have tweeted that picture you posted at people since then. I find they're less likely to argue with me when I'm just sharing the image versus making my own claims.

High quality product that highly influences people and takes information away.

That is google. There is no denying they lead the masses. There is also no denying that they provide more than enough services to make most people rely on them. Some people today can stop smoking or drinking, but they will have a harder time without google. Because too many things, too many conveniences are involved. And none of them take a toll on their personal health, but on different things they do not perceive or care about.

And if google wants people to think of something, they will cleverly try to send people there with their services.

What if I don't want this? Can't we at least just disable it and have it actually disabled and not just hidden more? A few users disabling telemetry is not going to destroy an application's support capabilities, but you're just asking us to throw out what we'd prefer in terms of safety and security in favor of minor benefit to the developers...
