Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

>>
>>52157525
how fucking rude you cockgobbling jew.
>>
>>52157538
Have x220, can confirm this thing barely stays cool. I really like this laptop, no intentions to replace it any time soon, but when running heavy workloads cpu easily gets above 85 degrees C. Docking station makes it worse too.
>>
>>52157589
That looks like screen burn in to me. The panel on the x220 actually does suffer from ghosting/burn in artefacts fairly quickly. I would recommend turning your backlight down, that seems to help. Also, make sure you use a screensaver, you don't want to leave the screen on the same image for too long.
>>
>>52157490
In the specific case of the X220, there actually is. i7 models have a USB 3.0 port, while i5 models only have USB 2.0.
>>
>>52157589
Looks like the panel was probably damaged by pressure in that area.

These temps though! Holy shit, this thing struggles with some gaymes
>>
>>52158067
That's because using the dGPU will increase temps, what games do you run? If your iGPU can't run it then consider not playing it, for the sake of your laptops health
>>
>>52158131
I was just playing the alpha of Slime Rancher. I really don't play games all that much anymore, what with work and pretending to be a responsible adult (also, my work schedule is retarded)

But most likely Slime Rancher being an alpha just means it is horribly unoptimized and it simply shouldn't be played for now.
>>
On an unrelated note, I just discovered you can actually pre-fill captchas so you don't have to keep redoing them.

That's actually a really nice feature, I think
>>
>>52158183
Disable your dGPU via BIOS and try playing again, you'll likely get a decrease in temps
>>
>>52158418
I actually ran it on the iGPU first. It stuttered and lagged so hard it was unplayable even on the lowest settings. I switched to dGPU, that is what temps looked like after an hour.

Game ran fine except for when there were too many slimes on screen at once. Had everything set to low to compensate.

Military grade metal frames aren't acceptable?

Well, then. I'd like you to tell me what exactly you are looking for.
See, /tpg/ is into business notebooks. HP Elitebooks look good enough that my fiancee has a 2760p Tablet that she's in love with
Thinkpads are tough enough that I throw them in my pack before heading off to work, never a scratch on it.
Dell's Precision line is the only other line of laptops (besides the aforementioned Toughbooks) that my dad allows in his fleet of trucks.

If you're looking for aesthetics, I used to have an MSI FX-603. But the hinges gave out in just under 3 years of use, as well as the ribbon cable.

If you're into art, music, or some other liberal hippy bullshit, look at Macs. I'm being serious. Macs are great for creative types. My uncle does graphic design for an airline company, that's what he uses.

Otherwise, you'll have a tough time finding a computer that is both well built and pretty

Haven't tried the OS X version though, so I don't know if that's a thing there.
>>
>>52162599
No longer true with Photoshop. Ever since CS4, all Adobe software got fast on Windows while feeling slow and bloated as hell on OSX.

Photoshop CC runs real nice on my Atom 2GB Surface 3 while lagging like shit on my rMBP13 8GB.

Use the psref .pdf I poasted. It helped me do very well off Ebay. I bought various organ donors, mixed and matched parts, kept some, sold some.

Here's the link again. Save it in case I'm killed by a falling BBW or stabbed by a BBC, because it is vital to Pad hunting.

How's the support for Linux on the Tblazeit looking?
>>
>>52172232

Can't say about the blazeit but for the T410 I have is perfect. You just need tlp which controls the cpu frequency for your desired energy outputs in both battery and ac mode (gotta disable the built in CPU scaling first with a simple command, read the tlp config in the guy's website).

Trackpad works amazing, unlike in Windows and almost everything works out of the box. At least in Elementary OS.

Couple of questions about the x220:

Trackpoint mouse buttons aren't working. I'm currently using the trackpad's mouse with no pointer control and the clitmouse as a combo. Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, etc - seems like its a common issue with Windows 7, so I'm curious if anyone else has run into Synaptic PS/2 mouse driver issues in the past.

- I'll be dualbooting with a Linux distro specifically for heavy web development (Ruby, Node, Docker VM, etc) and would like to know which would suit my needs. I've looked at Ubuntu MATE, my father suggested Mint. Any suggestions?

I figure the driver issue would be easier to solve through Linux than Windows, but I could be wrong.

>>52172455

Car stolen on New Year's? Damn dude.
>>
>>52166810

I bought my first x220 last week and received it yesterday. Its in extremely good condition (only issue is a dot on the display that I'll be swapping for an IPS screen anyway) and one busted USB port. I snagged it for just over $120 bucks and its worth every penny, i5 w/ 8GB RAM, 320GB.
>>
>>52172557

Works on my win7 machine. Download the drivers instead of letting windows getting them from you.
>>

I really like MATE DE
I haven't tried Mint myself, should test in VM though
I have no driver issues here, check BIOS to see if that might be it

Also, why not KDE DE?

Has anyone successfully updated their T430 to FHD 1080p? I'm looking to purchase one of the converter boards (just as soon as I can find one for sale).
>>
>>52172613

Checked the BIOS and its enabled, uninstalled and reinstalled manually, let the PC find the hardware, etc. Not sure what it is. I'll see what I can do once I get into Linux.

>>52172668

Played around with Mint in VM on my main PC, seems alright but honestly...its a little ugly. Feels ridged but that's probably inexperience with the distro talking. I haven't looked into KDE DE, checking it out now.

This is regarding Libreboot but anyone with electronics experience could answer as well

Anyone willing to share some advice regarding flashing SOICs?

My conflict is pic related.

I can't believe this fucking piece of plastic, gold plated wire, and steel clip is ~$30USD.
I paid almost that much for the spi... I actually paid 60USD for my X200 years ago and now I'm going to spend 30USD on a fucking clip! Really would like to avoid that
One alternative is getting a gook version for 5USD but the shipping estimates are 15days+

I rather put the money towards a good soldering kit and learn to use it.
My main question is, how likely is it that I'm going to fuck shit up if I solder the wiring directly to the SOIC instead of using the clip for flashing? How badly could things go, doing soldering on an X200 mainboard?

Should I just get the clip? Should I solder the wiring to the SOIC? Can the SOIC be easily replaced if I fuck up? Can I fuck up my whole mainboard if I can't into proper soldering?
>>
>>52173684
Planning to buy a rotary. V8 swaps aren't really available in my country.
>>
>>52174584
how much is the clip vs the cost of a new mobo
>>
>>52174300
T420 has a better screen (900p) with a bigger screen, which is probably more useful for you since you have a lot of tabs.

AFAIK T420 has a better iGPU
>>
>>52174832
>>52174832
you could get an entire X200 for ~60USD that posts. Even less if you take the time to look. The fucking clip is about 30USD. Could you really fuck up the entire mobo with one bad solder job? If it's relatively low risk I'll just get a kit, practice with it a little, and then try on the mobo.

Want to upgrade from an X220 i5 2540m to a **20 i7 2640m machine. Questions. 1. Will there be a noticeable performance improvement? 2. Will there be a noticeable increase in heat produced? 3. It's the weight difference between T420 and X220 serious enough to make portability an issue? 4. Is T420 cooler? Especially connected to the doc. 5. Any specific advantages of T over X besides the screen size?
>>
>>52181202
1. Not really unless you're doing shit that requires high performance, like video encoding or whatever. In that case, what the fuck are you doing it on a laptop for?

2. Yes, the i7 models are said to significantly increase the heat produced, especially in the X220 which runs pretty hot as-is.

3. I've got a T420 and X220 and while there is a significant difference in weight, it's not bad at all since I'm not a little bitch.

4. Overall, yes. Lot more mass and space to dissipate the heat into compared to the X220, which is tiny.

5. Ultrabay, ability to get a 1600x900 screen (or even up to 2560x1440 if you're adventurous with modding). Not much else honestly.

Keep in mind though that the color reproduction on stock T420 screens is fucking ASS, even to me, and I'm not a graphic designer or do anything that requires correct coloring. It just looks fucking awful. It can be fixed a bit by color profiles though.

As an owner of an i7 2620M X220 for four years now I'd say stay away. It runs incredibly hot. 1080p chinese cartoons send it to maybe 70-80 degrees. Ultrabase makes it worse. 97 degrees is not uncommon when sharing screen over Skype.
To be fair I live in a very hot climate but my X61s never goes above 70 in these conditions.
Disabling hyperthreading in the BIOS reduces temperatures by a fair bit and boosts battery life but if you're already crippling performance this way why the fuck would you go for an i7?

The only thing the i7 X220s have going for them is USB3.0 but there are always Expresscard modules.
