For a true Arch experience install awesome. For a realistic Arch experience install Xfce. And purge your system of that GNOME malware asap.

You can't tell me a basic Arch install with just GNOME had all this shit already on there.

The "clean" Arch installs you see in desktop threads usually run a window manager like i3, awesome or even openbox and show off a riced firefox and random terminal applications.

>>
>>52155630
You have several ttys and you bring them up using
Ctrl + Alt + F1-7
Typically your display manager starts X (your graphical session) on tty7, but if you start X manually by typing 'startx' in tty, your session will start on the tty you typed this on.
What you want to do is switch to a tty where X is not running, so pick whichever is applicable here.
>>
>>52155692
You can either start it from your display manager by choosing the awesome session or you can edit your ~/.xinitrc to have
exec awesome
Then awesome will start when yoou type startx from your user.

Also check out the wiki page:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Awesome

Arch is very well documented.
>>
>>52155692
If you did it the right way when you installed GNOME, just add `exec awesome` to your .xinitrc and then run `startx`.
>>
>>52155728
It appears I don't have a display manager running. Ffs I'm so shit with this
>>
>>52155754
That's fine. You don't need one to do this.
Just log in your user at the tty and open the file .xinitrc in your home folder.
If you're familiar with vi just type
vi ~/.xinitrc
otherwise you might want to install nano
pacman -S nano

In that case do
nano ~/.xinitrc

add the line:
exec awesome
and save the file.

Then type startx

I can't help you with Gnome, but I can help you with XFCE if you aren't set on gnome.

I installed xfce4 and xfce4-extra. I installed Faenza for icons and I'm using the Menda theme. I installed the LTS kernel because the newest kernel has a few gotcha bugs on virtualization.

I plan to do GPU passthrough and eliminate virtualbox for a window install, but that's something that will take me a while.

Anyways, last thing to do is to replace the application menu on the bottom bar with whiskermenu. It's part of xfce4-extra.

>>
>>52155168
ok here is a serious answer. First make sure you have the gnome tweak tool installed. Then install the arc gtk theme(it comes in 3 versions: dark, darker and normal). Then papirus icon theme(install only the icon theme when it asks you in the terminal otherwise you will pull kde as a dependency). Change your themes in the gnome settings( if you want to change the gnome-shell ie. the panel and more stuff you have to enable the user-themes extension). While still in the gnome-tweak-tool window change fonts and window buttons.(enable minimize and maximize)
After that download and install some extensions from the gnome website which you deem useful. I for one use archlinux update indicator, media player indicator, topicons, impatience and dynamic panel transparency.
Btw you dont need gnome for that.
Don't forget to remove most of the gnome bloat(games, maps. photo organizer/gnome-photos and document organizer/gnome-documents.

Or use bloated kde. try some stuff out and dont forget to yaourt -Qdt and removing old configs after uninstalling DE's

I'm not the same guy as you were initially talking to, but you'll want to edit your .xinitrc file.

cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc

Then edit it to remove the twm and the clock and the other shit, and add "exec yourwindowmanagerhere" to start your wm and anything else you want to have.

Im not saying gtk3 is a plus but for a newb it's a good thing to have gtk3 support or he will have to actively search for gtk2 stuff.

Dude I installed it for shits and giggles several times just to see what the fuss was all about.

pacman -S any package and it says not found. Fucking Ubuntu has more software available in its default PPA's than this piece of shit. I think it had something to do with adding unofficial repos who gives a fuck.

In the end Arch used the same amount of ram as my Xubuntu install, only difference, less packages which cancels out when you see that it is missing critical working features in the settings panel.

Just install any Ubuntu derivative and save yourself the heartache.

>>
>>52156941
Probably because you were too retarded to -Syu to update the cached package list.
>>
>>52156975
I did that. I did all the shenanigans listed in the wiki and video guides. It came down to the last part of adding unofficial repos which I didn't understand.

I used syslinux instead of grub which made life very easy, grub is a piece of shit.
>>
>>52156993
Really? Grub only needs you to, unless using EFI, do
pacman -S grub
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
grub-install --recheck /dev/sda

Also, you should never have to setup an unofficial repo. You probably followed a guide by someone who wasn't doing things right.
>>
>>52157044
I was testing it on a VM, for some reason when I did
grub-install /dev/sda
, it kept throwing errors regarding bios boot partition, the wiki said create a 1mb bios boot partition alongside root and swap.

the other way was
gurb-install /dev/sda --force
which worked eventually but I ran into another issue as .xinitrc was not created in my root partition and I had to manually load X each session.
>>
>>52157099
I've gotten that on a VM, and that's actually not because you need to make a boot partition. You need to leave 1MB of space before the first partition.

Depending on the partitioner you use, it will already do this. Some won't though. It was warning you because there wasn't room for the bootcode (well there is but it is being cautious).

xinitrc isn't created on it's own, it's located in /etc/xinit/xinitrc and you have to do >>52156126 to get it into your home directory, else it uses the default.

You are definitely right that arch is more work to setup. But if you don't go adding custom repos or doing stupid things, it definitely is easier to maintain than Ubuntu when something *breaks* later on.
>>
>>52157144
And to followup on the GRUB issue, it's actually more proper to specify the entire set of arguments.

grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda

There's a couple other flags you can pass too, in case it can't guess them, but it is much better nowadays than it used to be. I too used syslinux for the longest time until I learned how grub2 stopped sucking. In the past it was a shit.
>>
>>52157161

After several trial and error runs, I have created a step by step personal guide for my hardware setup. 95% of the installation will be done without any issues in 10-15 mins. The only issue I am facing is when I install xfce desktop, it doesn't start by itself. I get taken to shell and login to my account. Then startx or startxfce4 to get into my desktop.

The xfce desktop was barren, it looked nothing like my xubuntu desktop, no power manager and network manager in the settings. It was kind of disappointing in the end.

for now I am on xubuntu and looking at more videos to see where I made a mistake.

You then want a login manager. GDM is the gnome one. I don't use a login manager because I don't mind typing startxfce4, but I've tried a few. GDM is the easiest.

You may also then need to install a greeter (a theme) or it will not work.

Then enable the gdm service via systemd or whatever you've used.
>>
>>52157261
>>52157329
And to clarify, GDM works with XFCE! Just make sure it's not actually pulling "gnome-shell" as a dependency or anything. It shouldn't, but just watch to be sure.

Debian has 43000 packages in the default repos, so ubango has the same.
Arch has 13000.

New GNU/Linux users shouldn't use a user centric distro like arch. How are they supposed to choose software? This defies the whole idea of user centrism.
>>

>There are only 2 things: the official repo and user repos
This is true on Ubuntu.
This is not true on Arch.
>>
>>52161755
So what's the difference between the user repository and the weird user repository?
>>
>>52161782
THE user repository, i.e. the AUR, is a singular user repository maintained by Arch itself. Hence the name.
There are other user repositories (note: plural) that are not maintained by Arch and that are wholly separate from the AUR.
And there's hundreds of them.
