How is Arch Linux so light on RAM with a DE like Cinnamon? Only 770MiB and running Steam and Firefox. I've switched from Windows 10, and that bloated piece of spyware would hover around 2700MiB at idle.

Is all that RAM usage in Windows just for their botnet?

>>
Windows 10 still uses code from the Windows NT days. It's shit.
>>
RAM usage on arch is low because it's usually a minimal installation.

An "out of the box distro" installation usually tries to be usable for the majority of population, so it starts up software that you on your arch installation will never use so it's not even installed.

stuff like avahi, firewalld (which are useless on a desktop, but not having them on a laptop would be fucking annoying) cups server to name a few.

Windows is bloated.
If you ever wondered why Vista was trashed by the average consumer is because fresh installation of XP after a cold boot used ~130MB of RAM, and the same in Vista took ~700MB. It was a huge difference at the time and for many people is now.

Also Window's task manager does count cache in "RAM usage".
Something that your meme-scripts (like screenfetch) don't.
run free -h to see your RAM usage and cache.

Disgusting.

I got Arch down to 388MB using Awesome. Nowadays it's around 650ish because I installed Xfce and Compton on top of Awesome but still.

Because it doesn't need to change, you fucking tool.

The bulk of the Linux kernel hasn't changed since 1991.

Win 10 will hold a scalable portion of the available RAM for OS task:, Searching and indexing, keeping things like thumbnails and icons in cache.

On my 16GB system Win 10 holds almost 5GB.

All that because the directory layout and installed programs are unstructured and NTFS is fundamentally broken. Good times.
>>

Windows 10 is just garbage and beta quality software at best.
MS rushed it out a year too soon.
>>
>>52155764

Whatever, Linux still uses the same 11 000 lines of code from 1991, and the same 300 000 from 1995, and so on.

Don't be autistic.
>>
>>52155829
Have you seen Linux's changelog?

Practically every line of code gets changed every decade. It's CONSTANTLY being updated and fixed and shit.
>>
>>52155091
>Windows 10 still uses code from the Windows NT days.
So? Of course there are a lot of reasons to drop the legacy code but none of them means it's bad.
>>
>>52155091
Are you actually retarded?

Windows NT is still the kernel for all modern Windows operating systems. Obviously they're still going to use code for their kernel in their kernel.

Xfce is a proper DE.
Cinnamon, like Xfce, is just a DE. A DE cannot function without a WM. That you think it does shows you how stupid you are for using Cinnamon.

Do you have problems with communicating to people? A WM is one of the things that a DE consists of. You are using Awesome window manager instead of Xfwm. You are not using Xfce components exclusively. Xfwm has screen tearing issues and you have to enable an alternative composite manager.
Xfce is highly modular but it requires time to make it usable. That's why I said it it a timesink DE.

Furthermore you assumed I use Cinnamon and called me a stupid. How ironic.

Cinnamon has some issues itself but fixing them wont take much time. It's still faster than KDE and has more visual aesthetics than MATE/Xfce by default.

Now unless you can present proper counter arguments on the time factor, move along.

My windows 10 idles between 800-900mb ram.
Open up a few chrome tabs with YouTube pushes that up to around 1.2gb-1.4gb usually.

is it just me or has arch been incredibly stable ever since they switched to systemd?
since the switch i never had pacman(yaourt) shit up any configs or files and never had any critical issues that stopped my from operating arch.
i only had to reinstall once and that only because i made an error in a filepath in a config causing some shit to be deleted .

It's good, that means I don't need to upgrade in the future. Even 4gb would be enough for this laptop. In the end I did not compromise on packages or aesthetics, the distro is fully functional.
