Why do so many programs use more than one decimal point for their revision numbers? What does each additional decimal point mean?

When I check to see what version something is, I usually get some crazy number like 1.0.2.01.

Is a 4690k worth it over a 4460 if all I'm gonna be doing is gaymen and Photoshop?

Nothing heavier than that and my i5 2400 seems to be doing that fine right now.

And I would save about $100 if I go with the 4460+H97 board vs 4690k+Z97 board..

What you say senpai?

Are there any good laptops under 500$? I don't give a shit about games, the only thing I'll run there is LoL.
>>
>>52152908
The different decimals are different level of revision. There's no set meaning for what each decimal stands for other than the first number is the most major revision and the further to the right in the number you go the more minor the revision.

Say you have 1.x.y
1.x.y+1 could be a bug fix
1.x+1.0 could be new features like an equalizer on a music player
1.x+1.1 could be a fix for a bug that caused the program to crash when the equalizer was adjusted while the program was on its period
2.0.0 could be changing the UI from command line to a GUI

You might want to look up Linux kernel version numbers. They've changed their scheme over the years. This will show you how arbitrary this type of shit can be.

Mozilla are planning to overhaul the Firefox UI backend to port it from their XUL technology to Gecko technology. Mozilla are planning to overhaul the Firefox addons system and the consequence is that not all the features that were possible in the past are possible in the future. Mozilla are planning to remove custom theming support in Firefox.

This is the last Mozilla supported version of Firefox that's going to be supporting all these technologies and will be supported by Mozilla themselves.

Firefox ESR is still worth using, I use it myself because I simply can't stand what Firefox has turned into past v39 so I'll be "stuck" using this for quite a while. They're at 43.x now and when they get to 45 they'll end up releasing a new ESR based on 45 and I won't be moving to it.

Sad to see how shitty Firefox is becoming but at least for the moment I've still got ESR in a usable not fucked up form, it'll just end up being my browser for the future I suppose whether they drop updates for it or not.

Question regarding KeePassX: from what I understood, you set a master password which you use to access the other saved passwords?
Where does it save the passwords? Local database? If it's local, is there a way to access the passwords remotely, say if I visited a friend and needed to log in to a site with a password generated by KeePassX which I obviously won't remember?

KeePassX stores passwords in flatfile databases with the .kdb extension.

If you need to access your database remotely, you can put your .kdb file on a cloud hosting service and use a mobile app to open the file from your phone. For Android, I recommend KeePassDroid. It works well, has a nice UI, and is FOSS.

I wonder if someone has an explanation for this.

Every time I start up my laptop (openSUSE, btw), I have to take care that it connects to the Internet before I open Firefox.

If I open Firefox before the wifi connects (doesn't happen to other browsers, btw) it will act as though there is no connection to the Internet.

So... What do?

>>52157881
I can't be certain it's an exclusively openSUSE problem since I think the same was true when I was using Fedora not too long ago. Maybe KDE is connected somehow though (can't remember if it was still true when I used Fedora with GNOME).

eth0 is my network interface. What are eth0 files? Files that explicitly define my eth0 device?
>>
>>52158068
I've never taken the time to try openSUSE before, so I don't know if they have the exact same names, but if you have wireless, you can create the file (eth1 would be onboard)
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

(syntax)
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<interface-name>

and add this inside

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes

You can change your private IP (192.168.0.1) as you please. You cannot change your public IP. That is provided by your ISP
>>
>>52158162
Local or public IP? The latter depends on your ISP. Usually you can just change the router's MAC address, otherwise you might need to turn off the box for who knows how many hours.

For the former you can likely find some rotation setting in the router.

If no - no idea what you can do.
Whether yes, you are fucked bro. Stop synchronization, backup bookmarks into html file, save add-ons settings (I mean: filters and such) into simple text file, not .ini or similar settings file, then delete sync data, restore browsers' defaults and start the game from the beginning.
At least that's all I can help after experiencing effects of browser hijackers.

If you print stuff or the professors aren't going to freak out over an occasional formatting error then google docs is fine. There will be plenty of support pages showing you how to do X that has a slightly different menu than office

So I just got my Network+ and I'm planning on getting a second certificate. I was mostly considering the Security+ because my eventual end goal is to be a contractor/doing security consulting or something where I can work like 10 hours a week and make loadsamoney. Although now I'm kind of iffy on if I should actually get the Security+ while having no experience or if I should go more horizontal but vendor specialized and go after the CCNA, or maybe in terms of security the CEH would be better?

Thanks! Good luck to you too. My tips for it are make sure you memorize all your acronyms since the test ONLY uses them, and if you know what it stands for it makes some questions trivial. Also when taking it only do questions you know right away for sure and flag the ones you have to think about and the simulation stuff and then come back to that at the end. You get like a minute per question so it's pretty easy to not be able to finish every question if you get stuck on one too long and the simulations suck to navigate so they take like 2 minutes at least.

Otherwise, material itself isn't too hard and you only kinda have to be careful about parsing it as they word basically every question in a "real world situation" context which makes it so you have to read it a couple times occasionally.

But yeah, based off this http://www.tomsitpro.com/articles/information-security-certifications,2-205.html
I'm kinda starting to not consider the Security+ since it seems kinda dry job wise and what I've found most of them are military/government jobs too.

Go into the home directory and make sure the file you downloaded is there. Even easier would be to type

"mv ./desktop_" and then hit tab to see if it autocompletes. If not, then run the command:

'find $HOME -name "desktop_approots.tgz"'

which will locate where the file is.

Different guy, but to expand on that, the only times the computers on the switch would touch the router is if they're within a different broadcast domain to the computer they're connecting to or if the router is doing the DHCP leasing. You can probably assume your switch is a Layer 3 switch since it itself has Wi-Fi connectivity so in that case the switch itself has a table of the IPs of the computers connected to it and sends it between them based upon that.

Dry as in not a ton of jobs compared to other Security certs or things like the CCNA.

>Now, this is kind of disappointing. I thought there would be many opportunities in the corporate world with an expertize on security.
Oh no, there's still a TON and with all the hacks there's only going to be more demands, like if you look at my link there's
102,393 job results for the CCISP and 85,109 for the CISM.

I was just mostly saying specifically for the Security+ certificate outside of the military and gov't there's less demand than I though, and mainly I think the military gov't demand is because it meets a security clearance regulation.

How big a deal is the Steam Holiday Sale?
I'm not gaymer, but I wanted to play some gaymes on my chinkpad and ran into this list:

http://store.steampowered.com/curator/6867599-Works-on-your-Toaster/?appid=227780

Seems they're practically giving these games away. I've been thinking of doing a clean install of Windurrs, so can I purchase the games without downloading them so I can play them in the future?
>>
>>52160727
yes.
I usually wait for sales. Instead of 60euros I can get games for like 25.
All you need is a bit of patience when there's no sale running.
>>
>>52160727

Yup, they'll all be connected to your Steam account and you'll have them there until Steam dies.

Go wild.

Recommended games from there:
FTL
Mount & Blade Warband
Mark of the Ninja
Cave Story+
Deus Ex
Portal
Torchlight
System Shock 2

I need to backup few partitions (multiboot), I read that Clonezilla is often recommended for being newbie-friendly, but after reading its page I found it's not what I need, beacuse mainly
>The destination partition must be equal or larger than the source one.
>Differential/incremental backup is not implemented yet.
and maybe
>Due to the image format limitation, the image can not be explored or mounted.
Can you recommend me fairly easy-to-use backup software that backups whole partitions, but only data on them? (So if I have 20GB used on 100GB partition, it will just "clone" that 20GB)

So, I'll see these prices again?

Steam is like the Kohl's of digital games isn't it? (Where everyone who's shopped there before knows the MSRP can be ignored because it will always go on sale.)

I'm only asking because I'd have to run out to 7-11 and buy a prepaid VISA since I don't like linking my debit card to things.

I see, thanks for the clarification. I guess it's normal since Security+ is considered entry-level if i'm not wrong. I've looked at your link and i misread 102,393 because of the misplaced comma.

I still have no idea which path to take and i'm pretty worried. I know it's best to specialize in something but i really need to start as soon as possible to not waste any time.

Also, some other questions for anyone who is reading this:

Will i encounter any problems in the IT field without a degree? How fast is someone able to climb up if you keep learning without falling to the comfort zone?

You don't have to link your card, you can just do one time payments. You can also use PayPal if you have that. There's also Steam Wallet cards which you buy for like $20, $50, or $100 and you get that amount in your account to use, so if you do go out I'd get that over a prepaid VISA.

Are elements in an array copies of the objects you specify in C++? I always thought they were just pointers to the actual objects, but I ran into an issue when trying to draw an object to the window.

This wouldn't draw the object:

Object object = Object();
Object arry[5];
arry[0] = object;
for (int i = 0; i < length; i++)
{
arry[i].draw(window);
}

This did:

Object object = Object();
Object * arry[5];
arry[0] = &object;
for (int i = 0; i < length; i++)
{
arry[i]->draw(window);
}

It sort of makes sense, but I was hoping someone could elaborate on it a little more, and googling the question turned up unrelated stuff.

Expect knock on the door and slap on the wrist then. You won't proof it's found not stolen and even if it is the first, you just proofed your desire of benefit. It's all logged. Not that cops have nothing to do but there may be some time after that phone is reported stolen that exact IMEI is searched for, logs assign your SIM card (it's IMSI) with it, then your personal details by carrier.
I don't even then.

It's late here, forgive if I shit-type something. :^)
I meant Z3C is quite superior to that Moto in terms of powertrain (CPU, RAM), quick charge and better battery, more compact size. On the other hand, Motorola should be cheap.
In no way I meant to force you to go iOS route, I just wanted to share my experience after using Z1C and S5 for long time that no matter what you buy, it's still far from what you could expect from phone with such price tag because Android do is imperfect and the weaker phone, the (even more) worse it performs.
Negligible (not neglectible, lol) - I wanted to say: "each newer top spec Android phone is only a bit better than previous, the OS itself is still full of bugs and more prone to anything goind bad than iOS".
Just like everybody has got their opinion, here's mine.
>>

i'm conflicted, because the 3rd gen g already has marshmallow i think. and sony seem slow with updates. and i've read bad things about the z3c build quality, which puts me off. the phone size is perfect though.

the bugs ... yeah. which is why i like the moto g. great dev community, and they will probably put android 7 or whatever on it. z3c community seems lacking.

I heard the opposite, but never cared enough to look into it, I'm just stuck with this Z1C @ 5.1.1 for long. If you are into dev communities, good for you, if the price on the Moto is reasonable - go for it. Regarding applications which have to be launched from a terminal but always open a separate window (like mpv or mupdf). One can either:

1. Launch a new terminal whenever running such an application (which seems stupid)
2. Always run such applications in the background, in which case you have to keep track of the terminal you launched them from so you don't accidentally close it, and append '&' to every command (which seems stupid)

So I've been trying to play some games lately on voobly and steam, and they both keep asking me to forward some ports to connect to some players.

I'm fairly computer illiterate, and I've currently got my computer hardlined into the router via some cat-5 looking thing I found lying around, and it seems to connect to the internet just fine.

I never had problems before I moved when I had my laptop lined into my old modem-router 2-in-1. So why is it asking to forward ports all of the sudden, and making me play through proxies?

Could it be because the router I'm using now is different and I think connects to a modem somewhere?

Try running it with you fans off for a second. If it stops, it's the fans. If not, it's coil whine
>>
>>52165723
nope
>>
>>52165724
I know for a fact it's the fans, but not how to stop it

>>52165762
Try replacing the thermal paste with toothpaste. Reduces vibrations.

Hey /sqt/, Happy New Year.

I'm really really in a pickle searching for how to find a program or other such thing to adjust over/underscanning. My friend's tv cuts off about a taskbar's width of content on all sides when we use HDMI.
>>
I got a 9590 and a H60 Water Cooler for it. I'm not sure if my motheboard, M5A99FX PRO R2.0, or the cooler is having the issue. I underclocked from 4.7 to 4.4 GHz and the system is stable now but I want to up the clocking back to normal.

Googling 9590 and M5A99FX PRO R2.0 brings up a bunch of problems with the combo on Tom's Hardware, but I'm not sure which is the problem. I'm pretty sure the H60 isn't enough for the thing, so I was planning to up it to a better cooler, but I wanted to know if it could just be the motherboard not handling the voltage well and overheating.

Any help?

You tried in menu tv settings? What kind of GPU? Ik Nvidia/Intel/AMD has in their control panels options to fix this

Did you try increasing the pump interval? How many fans/what is the fan speed? If the fan is automatic what is controlling the automatic increase in rpm? mobo?
>>
>>52165915
I have the TV is a shitty Samsung.

I've got a Nvidia card, but I can't find shit in the Nvidia control panel. When I got to the Intel panel and select the TV display and do a custom resolution. It always gives me an error

How do I convince my ISP to change my static IP?

I tried messing with the damn thing and it wouldn't change no matter what I applied to the damn thing. I have no idea what controls it but even messing with the mobo didn't change the speed for some reason.

Yeah, sorry for being a pleb. We're just trying to watch a movie.

I know how to access bios, but how would I force it as dedicated?

I just formatted and forgot to backup my firefox extensions.

I had a free addon that got around Pandora's geofence bullshit, it was completely free too. I can't find it again though. Does anyone know the name of it?

No, it wasn't Hola garbage, it was something else.
>>
>>52166068
Well, nothing like that showed in the BIOS. I'll keep looking around for how to force them to switch at some point.

Thanks again though! Be safe tonight if you go out or whatever.

Is there a way to prevent the Windows Explorer getting written into the Swap/Pagefile? Like what did those stupid pieces of shit think when they developed Vista. As if the Windows Explorer is that big that it's justified to be written into the pagefile even though it's constantly needed. Especially when not even all of my memory is used i don't see a reason why it should be swapped. Every time I open my browser everything behind it is written into the pagefile. If I minimize the browser again after a while the explorer needs a minute again to be loaded into the memory. Only then I can use it again for simple shit like pressing the start button or opening folders. This has to stop.

try disabling the onboard GPU driver. GL tho

Are there any websites that would allow me to use cURL to convert a png to a jpg? Like:
curl -F'url=https://i.4cdn.org/g/1451549658331.png' https://pngtojpg.io
curl -F'[email protected]' https://pngtojpg.io

Thanks.
>>
>>52166333
Yes. Disable pagefile and minimize swap to 256mb
>>
>>52166442
hah no
>>
>>52166333
Unless you're running a serious memory deficit, it won't page the active program to disk. So it shouldn't be necessary. If it pages it to disk while you're in CoD or excel, why would you care?

Also, buy more RAM. It's cheap.
