Why aren't you using a Pentium 4?

the performance was terrible even at that time

>early models outperformed by pentium 3 (lol)
>later models (vastly) outperformed by athlon 64

only the northwoods in that middle period were alright because they overclocked nicely (that is, until they suddenly died, northwood sudden death syndrome)

other than that it was a stupidly hot processor that used a lot of power, while hyperthreading was virtually useless

pentium d was just two pentium 4s poorly grafted together without hyperthreading and the 90nm models were hotter than the surface of the sun

this
I tried modifying my p4 3ghz prescott case to meet my needs over temps and i ended up with the perfect space heater, see pic related.
In the other hand it doesn't run too slow yet, i still have it up to date in case my laptop gives up, and after some ram addition, the last agp gpu available i got second hand, a main Sata hdd and some overclocking it still can run heavy software relatively fast.
>>
I had a overclocked pentium 805D on a shitty thermaltake watercooling kit with like 1/4" tubing back in the day

still don't know how the house never burnt down

I had a Pentium 4 then a Pentium D, which was basically two Pentium 4s glued together. Very good room heaters.

thinking of ordering a pair of 3 GHz Gallatin Xeon MPs for my shed space heater, as shitty as NetBurst was the high-end chips kind of intrigue me.

Willamettes in the 1.7-2 GHz range weren't too awful, they showed a noticeable improvement over Coppermine by then and I believe their floating point and SSE performance especially was pretty damn good.

But that's probably my S423 fetish talking.

The CPU in my old work PC is a P4 2Ghz w/HT. Used that system for way longer than I should have, given that I did some heavy processing on it; only slowed down, never outright locked up or crashed.

Where did you pull that from? High-clocked Prescotts were about 110W TPD at stock clock, and in the 140W range at most if overclocked remotely stably. 300W is one of those things that never happened but yet are believed by many frequenters of these premises, apparently.
>>
>>52141030
WTF dude? Air is supposed to come in at the front and come out at the back, always more exaust fan push than intake fan pull. What you have there is an inefficient clusterfuck (provided it really works the way you have drawn it).
>>
>>52143847
How about a P4EE Galattin?
>>
>>52143847
I am considering swapping out a 3.4GHz Prescott for an equally clocked Northwood. Is it a good idea? Do Northwoods still mostly outperfom Prescotts as they did 11 years ago, or do modern tasks favor the Prescotts's larger L2 cache?
>>
>>52152660
Gallatin is just Northwood with L3 cache.
>>52152699
AFAIK Northwood blew Prescott the fuck out clock for clock

Woah mang, crazy seeing you here.
>>
>>52152727
In some tasks, the Prescott wins, in others, the Northwood.

There's no benchmarks out though that show this as I dont think anyone is willing to sit through the hours it'd take for a P4 to chew through a suitable number of modern benchmarks let alone 2 of them.

It would be more interesting to see how useful the Pentium D is these days (especially compared to Athlon 64 X2). Back then it was seen to be a borderline-useless novelty for Intel fanboys.

Because it's 2003 and those 3.2Ghz pentium 4s are slower than my 2.4Ghz athlon.
Because it's 2005 and those 3.48Ghz pentium 4s are slower by a god damn mile than my athlon 64x2 3400+
Because it's 2007 and...whoops Intel actually did something right with Core2
