What's life without Google Apps like?

Say if I just install CM. What do I do then?

Install the botnet.

Install MicroG FLOSS Google Services™

All you need is fdroid and apkTrack and also stuff for integration with owncloud.
>>
>>52137754
what about youtube?

>>
>>52137794
Cmon man. Don't tell me that you can't live without youtube. Also, you can install any non-free stuff manually by the apk and keep track of updates with apkTrack. It's really not much of a deal.
>>
>>52137815
>>52137798
gonna give it another try now then
how long has it been since you guys stopped using the botnet?

Why don't you just buy a phone with a real os that respects your 4 essential freedoms?

Months. I used to use only play store before but after I found apktrack, I finally purged every botnet feature from my phone.
>>
>>52137840
February, it's not hard. F-droid has all the necessary apps.

>>52137408
Does this let me bypass the YOU NEED GOOGLE PLAY SERVICES dialog that pops up in some apps?
>>
>>52137375
I use Yandex Kit as a replacement, I love being botnet free

Yes, but you need signature faking with xposed or this:
https://github.com/moosd/Needle
Look here as well for cloud messaging or maps or whatever:

I don't use them on a daily basis
I have google play but that's it. I use Gmail though, in my browser and with icedove and the stock android mail application
>>
>>52137375
I ditched gapps a while back. the main thing I miss is maps with its real-time traffic information. you get used to doing without it pretty quickly though.

I'm seriously considering doing this but the only thing holding me back is Google drive. At this point I have way too much shit on there, and since I've got 500 free gb it's not like I can transfer that stuff to another cloud like dropbox.

If I decide to go gapps free is there a way for me to install just one Google app and have it work? Otherwise I need an open source Google drive viewer.

can anyone recommend a nice calendar app?
>>
>>52138565
Thanks, but I'm a little confused on how it works from looking at the website. If I just want the same functionality as Google drive should I set up a server or use a provider?
>>
>>52138649
Setting up a server is too much of a hassle. Use a provider.
>>
>>52138671
Any recommendations for a good free one?
>>
>>52138630
Stock calendar app with owncloud integration.
>>
>>52138685
I don't think you can find any that provides 500GB for free. You see, ethical companies have better business strategies which means, you gotta pay. But I use openmailbox.
>>
>>52138712
I'm not using anywhere close to the 500gb, and if I go through and cut out stuff I will never use I can probably lower it down to a few gigabytes. Thanks for the info.

>>
>>52137375
Pretty clean feeling. Only thing I missed was Google maps. Nokia HERE maps is OK but Google is still king of that realm. Anyway this app was awesome for grabbing apps directly from the play store without needing play store on your phone: http://www.onyxbits.de/raccoon

>>52138869
That's what you get for not wanting ad-ridden service.

CM12 without Gapps for around a year. Using Nexus 5 with F-droid and I don't miss them at all.

>I use Yandex Kit
I've recently moved from Zoho enterprise to Yandex because it gives me 1,000 free email boxes and doesn't get thrown to the spam folder on outlook emails.

It's pretty good. Yandex disk gives you 10 free GB. I wouldn't use it on my phone ,though. It keeps asking for my mobile number and so on. I don't actually trust them but I didn't trust zoho either

Google is shit and if you think that it is a necessity then evaluate the work you produce, it may not meet your initial belief.

If you suffer from poverty, my apologies, please attempt to live a relevant life with dignity and that includes using the proper tools.

You can access Yandex Disk via webdav with a file explorer
>>
>>52137375
Protip: Only have play store on your device, for repository reasons. Deepfreeze that shit when your not using it. All the other gapps have foss alternatives.

Serious question here. I'm also using android with nogapps. Comfy so far except that there are a few apps that literally require google play services. That annoys me.

Does Google still get your location etc via android even though there are no gapps installed ?
>>
The biggest disadvantage is little to no apps.
I have replaced most of google by my own replacements.

calendar: owncloud / caldav
contacts: owncloud / carddav
drive: owncloud
mail: postfix / k9mail
im: sms

I see that you can download APKs from Play Store, even on your PC, but I never tried it.

Does that work well? How about updates? Just install the new one over the old?
>>
wait what why do people even want to bloat their phones and reduce batter life with gapps?
Personally im running a 5 year old phone (htc desire S) with CM12.1 without gapps, using telegram for chatting and some free apps from fdroid + k9. What am i missing out on apart from youtube? never understood what gapps has to offer and why i would even want them.
>>
>>52145152
well, unless you install apks manually, the play store has many more apps than f-droid
>>
>>52145152
Google maps, signal refuses to run, slack bitches about play services not being present. Many apps utilize the cloud messaging feature of play services to deliver notifications. Telegram has a fallback, but not all apps do
>>
>>52144407
You can download them from here for example
https://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/

it just gets you the apk file to install, and any newer version can be installed on top of it (manually)
