Manufacturer only has to worry about it looking good and taking up minimal space. Getting it to work isnt a concern because theyre taking keyboard tech already out there, and condensing it to a small form factor.
The keys themselves use a metal cap instead of rubber dome for a rigid press, and the travel is only a millimeter or two.
It interfaces on an HID compliant hub built onto the logic board which in most cases would be used for debugging anyways.
The real culprit is the slide out/folding mechanism. Takes of space, point of failure, and cant break over normal use, that shit needs to be rated for a while and use both metal and plastic materials for longevity and lower cost. This is where most of the r&d goes because they cant afford to service the phone when the part is literally built into the chassis of the phone.

Externally there arent changes. Internally there are. The layout is the same but the logic board is rebuilt from scratch each new iteration to accomodate newer gyroscopes, processors, and other features (touch ID, M coprocessor, etc).

I like TouchPal because of the wave messaging feature.
Pretty much it predicts your next word so you don't have to type or swipe it.
Just drag it down to the space bar. The more you use it the more accurate it becomes.
Also the swipe keyboard is pretty accurate.
Also it's free and has a lot of other nice features.
