Probably Arch and screenfetch/scrot. It's in the repos of most distros. Just search it up online and see if it is. If it isn't, then it's on github and the installation is pretty simple. I can't help you with the audio visualizer and I'm not sure about the terminals myself.

Yup. That washed out colour only looks good in a movie. I hate the foggy haze, nothing is clear. I don't think I could actually use a desktop without getting distracted by my windows looking like a fucking lens flare.

The hazy out-of-focus look is just the current trend in photography, isn't it? Back in 2012 it was a "crunch" look where you tried to look crisp and sharp while doing something stupid or posing.

The hazy look contrasts nicely when your foreground, the general workspace, is sharp.
>>
>>52133564
It belongs in a photograph, not in your ui
>>
>>52132940

>>52133574
It's a good thing your desktop doesn't have the faded look or you'd have a heart attack in your seat.

it looks fine when your foreground is actually sharp. Not when all of your colours focus the same washed out look. It maeks it harder to see.
>>
>>52133574
But that's just it, you relegate the hazy look to the background wallpaper while your foreground where you actually interact with the UI is so sharp it gives you 20/20 vision. I'm exaggerating but it's the contrast between foreground and background that makes it work. Obviously >>52132953 is a poor example because his foreground is as hazy as his background. But what if he added shadows?

Just look at this desktop. >>52132412
>>

That desktop has absolutely nothing to do with what we're discussing (faded, washed-out colors/very low contrast)

Sorry for asking a mostly unrelated question, but as someone new to Linux in general who is in the process of installing Debian, which desktop environment would you guys recommend?

Ideally I'd like something incredibly simple that I can go back and customize later, and that is lightweight in terms of system weight (which I'm sure describes most DEs)
>>

No that's anime

>>52133642
gentoo. no really, gentoo. Go for it.
>>
>>52133642
Most people here don't use a de
I guess if you have to use one xfce would be best for light weight/modularity
>>
>>52133642
>which I'm sure describes most DEs
you'd be surprised

xfce sounds like what you're after. DEs often are a little awkward to customize.

Old scrot, but the switch was made to avoid the monotonous droning of black/dark gray terminals. The text is legible and there's a definitive understanding of window vs. wall as well as active window, so I don't see the issue, other than your own opinion.

>>52133641
Thanks.
>>
>>52133669
All DEs are is pre-packaged sets of software + gui config tools
Pretty useless if you already know what you want
>>
>>52133680
Oh, I see

Does that mean that, what, most people build their own GUIs directly through the OS?
>>
>>52133695
Not at all
Instead of installing a ton of extra stuff from a de that they wouldn't use, they simply install the few packages they know they want
You should definitely be using a de if you don't even understand what it does
>>
>>52133712
Oh, so a DE is like a combo meal while people who build their own GUIs just get the individual bits they actually want
>>
>>52133725
Pretty much, lol
Only imagine the combo meal came with hundreds of pieces and you only wanted like 5 of them
>>
>>52133725
that's a good analogy lel

you're pretty right though. A DE comes with software + window manager + display manager + misc utilities.

Most of us just use a window manager on its own with nothing else but our own software choices

I used a custom script which pulls album art embedded in the mp3, since I've always hated having images in my music library.
http://ix.io/n3F

Easymode is to get ncmpcpp to call your script for you.
>>

Yes, you just add it to 'execute_on_song_change' in your ncmpcpp config

There's a part of ncmpcpp's config that allows commands to be executed on song change.

ok holy shit guys
i just installed arch yesterday and today i installed openbox
holy fucking shit i've never seen anything more barebones. i was staring at my monitor for like a minute wondering when the rest of it would load.

ergh. suggest me the programs that i need to make this an actual functioning operating system. i have gnome-panel installed for my taskbar and shit, is there a better solution for me to use? maybe someone should post their autostart file or something

>>
>>52134279
don't need ncmpcpp to be running, so
1) don't have to start ncmpcpp for notifications
2) having multiple instances of ncmpcpp open won't spawn duplicate notifications
3) simpler

touch screen is alright, does everything that I want (move the cursor, click, and scroll). sometimes clicking via touch screen doesn't work when I wake my computer, but I have yet to find the cause

some issues with wireless at first, but I think the most recent fedora releases have it handled out of the box. only other notable hardware issue is sometimes it doesn't go into sleep mode because the screen makes the mouse spaz out when the lid is closed... but I think it's only been a problem when I connect it to an external monitor?

biggest struggle is getting high DPI to play nicely with linux, but fedora does a nice job of it.

9/10 laptop, would recommend

there are two scripts in the link (separated by the "==========" (which in retrospect was a bad idea))

save em both and name the first one 'mpc-notify' and second one 'mpc-notify-daemon'

run `chmod +x mpc-notify mpc-notify-daemon`

move both scripts to somewhere in `$PATH`

run `mpc-notify-daemon &` and close the terminal window`

hope it helps
