You have been visited by the SSD of Speed.

Good boot times and game load times will come to you, but only if you embrace the SSD meme and buy one.

Good post. 30 cents have been deposited to your paypal account.

Already have 6 :^)

SSDs are pretty great as long as you know what you're buying and choose something appropriate.

> Samsung 8xx Pro series are all excellent.
> For the love of God don't get TLC shit like EVO or whatever though.
>>
>>52125549
Isn't it the other way around with the 850s? Pro had some problems, but EVO is fine?
>>
what are the most reliable ssds? i have had 2 sandisk fail on me in one year.
>>
>>52125020
What is this ssd meme??

btw i was thinking of picking up a 240 or 250gig..

bestbuy has now on sale

sandisk plus ssd 240 gig for 69.99

samsung 850 evo 250 for 84.99

pny cs1100 240 gig for 79.99

thinking of getting the samsung...
>>
Just upgraded form spinning rust, the speed boost is awesome. Anyone who says it's a meme hasn't tried one yet.

poor fags still running 5400rpm drives too poor to upgrade try to make you feel bad for living in the present while they are stuck in the past
>>

Have fun with your loud, slow HDD faggot.

ahh thanks.

Wonder who put a HDD in my laptop. Also wonder how my laptop chanaged from a latitude to that.
>>
My computer boots in seconds with a mechanical harddisk (not counting the shit the firmware does after POST because hur dur EFI and proprietary patches don't like non signed bootloader)
Just don't be an idiot with your initd config.
>>
>>52130595
>My computer boots in seconds with a mechanical harddisk

>seconds
>25 seconds

Yea, that's painfully slow :)
>>
>>52130595
Also takes 10 seconds to load an app.

You shouldn't downplay SSD performance benefits if you've never used one.

>>52125549
To a non enterprise user there is no noticeable difference between EVO and PRO.
>>
>>52130740
Jesus I said app.
>>
>>52130740
>Implying any program that takes 10 seconds to load is worth not immediately removing
the only app that takes 10 seconds to load is firefox. Everything else is instant (X11, fvwm, vim, xterm, openscad, make, tex, whatever else)
SSDs are great but your performance problem isn't because of your hardware.
>>
>>52130765
You're absolved of your sin.
>>
>>52130822
>the only app that takes 10 seconds to load is firefox

Fix your life (get an SSD)

>To a non enterprise user there is no noticeable difference between EVO and PRO.

most of the performance improvements of PRO are trivial, but the endurance difference is real and relevant to consumers.
EVO uses TLC and has half the endurance of the PRO's MLC.

120GB/250GB EVOs have only 75TB write endurance, which can actually get gobbled up in less than a few years without requiring too much imagination.
>>
>>52130931
4 years of writing 40GB a day is 75TB endurance. I wouldn't even class that as consumer level.
>>
>>52130931
>few years
Few years is enough for new technology to come around. Face it, do you have any HDD older than 5 years in your computers?
>>
>>52130705
About 10 seconds actually.
>>
>>52125020
I know you're just trolling or trying to rustle the jimmies of someone that gives a shit.

Story time:
>get sexy laptop
>internal hybrid sshd
>boots slow as fuark
>the 3 year old ssd in my desktop is way faster than this piece of shit
>deal with it for almost a year because too poor to upgrade
>one day say fuck this and upgrade
>boot times super fast
>programs open super fast
>no bootup lag, no sitting waiting for the computer like this is 1996 again

feels good, man.
>>
>>52130954
>>52130958
that's not totally insane to care about.

I have workstations with 32+GB RAM that I intentionally disable suspend-to-disk to avoid murdering my SSD.

other people who do advanced shooping can also churn many GB a day of swapped crap, which is more "professional" level I guess but certainly not "enterprise".
>>
boot times are the last thing you should brag about, because sleep mode exists for a reason
>>
>>52131175
If you have enough money for 32GB workstation or have money to shoop, have enough money to buy enterprise level ssds. Simply because their work will pay for that equipment.
So meh.
>>
>>52125020
Already got one for my desktop but my laptop works fine with a HDD
>>
Wonder who put a HDD in my laptop. Also wonder how my laptop chanaged from a latitude to that.

>>52130958
My 500 gig raptor is that old.
My 1TB samsung is that old.

All of my 5+ year old drives including IDE still work fine.
>>
I was just getting ready to post in this thread on my desktop with a samsung evo in it and the fucking thing just died.

850 EVO 250gb for $65 on newegg right now

This.
>>

>Face it, do you have any HDD older than 5 years in your computers?
My 286 has a 26 year old seagate
My Pentium has a 19 year old seagate
My desktop has a 3 year old samsung 240 pro SSD and two 5 year old hitachi HDDs
My laptop has a 6 year old Hitachi HDD

Yeah, for fun it's ok, but why would you keep such old drives in use?

>>52131332
1TB isn't too much for data, however as long as it lives, may it live.

> All of my 5+ year old drives including IDE still work fine.
i got whole box full of working old ide drives.
I even have 5" hdd still working, couple hundred megs in size...
>>
>>52131344
yeah i picked one up.

i am really waiting for that 1TB to go back on sale for $170. i am pissed i didnt bite on that when i saw it
>>
>>52131403
Because why not? Also I don't think the 286 even supports modern adapters or anything, it has just a list of a few HDDs that were made whn that computer was new
>>
Dank memes aside, my SSD is the only upgrade worth a damn. Everything boots up faster. Even maps in multiplayer games so I can choose literally whatever any limited class I want to play every damn round. No exceptions.
>>
>>52131435
Well, i might have phrased in wrong. Why would you keep such drives in production environment.
For fun it's ok, i still have my first PC, but for my work and daily stuff i have newer machines.
>>
>>52131468
They are obviously not used for anything serious
>>
>>52131031
What HDD are you using?
>>
>>52131403
well ive also got a 3tb black, but that isnt 5 years old. and not to mention my 1tb black and 2x 6tb red in my server
>>
Though I couldn't really advocate buying Samsung's overpriced TLC drives... the MLC drives are great and can be had cheap on Amazon. Just make sure to know what you're buying of course. Chinese knockoffs and shit versions exist, as with everything else.
>>
>>52131367
Oh there was a code for it. Now it's a rebate

I have a crucial mx200. I chose it for the price at the time, $2 more than the bx100 and supposedly better performing controller.
>>
>>52131371
Got both crucial mx100 and samyang 850 evo. Past evo's SLC cache they have almost the same performance.
>>
>>52131494
I don't know, I think it's some WD thing? It really doesn't matter nearly as much as your bootloader and initd config.
