>time warner raising modem rental fee to $10/mo
>mfw
Anyways, at this point it seems like a stuipidity tax to keep renting a modem from them. What does /g/ recommend as far as cable modems go? Right now the highest speed tier available to me is 50mbps but the cableco is promising 100mbps+ speeds within the next couple years so I don't want to buy something obsolete

I am interested in this as well. Fucking tired of paying comcast 10 bucks a month.
Yeah, my household has been paying the stupidity tax for a while. My buddy says that the most expensive modem is still only $60 or so.
>Have cable rental on my bill first month after moving
>Have some issues and have a tech come out to troubleshoot
>Call up and bitch about the issues afterwards
>Get modem gifted and don't pay anything now
Those $60 Motorola modems are great, and can deliver 100s of mbps.

Why not buy a modem? You don't have to rent one.

>OP asks for advice on what cable modem to buy
>you ask him why he hasn't considered buying a modem
Are you retarded?
>comcast gave me a cisco modem I pay rent on
>i use my own router and switch
The only things available are those Motorola modem/router combos, think I should make the switch?

I got some netgear cable modem, it's pretty good
Depends on your needs. The speed of your connection, the WiFi range yiu need, how many devices you want connected at once, etc.

I'm just looking for a cable modem, not a cable modem/router combo.

I don't need a switch, just a typical modem and router combo.
It's for a household, not a server or something.
Should I just buy a SFP>RJ45 module and a normal router?

this is horrible, these need to be separate devices

A CM with integrated router functionality might not get IPv6 to it from TWC. I believe since they aren't done vetting firmware etc - they only give you v4 if you something other than a straight (layer 2) CM. So yes the router itself might "support" IPv6 - but its too much of a support risk for TWC to "let it rip".
I had one of their's that had built in router/wifi (I didn't use it). I got rid of it and bought my own SB6141 - and started getting IPv6.
This was my experience in my particular market - YMMV.
I've been happy with the ARRIS Touchstone Cable Modem CM820 DOCSIS 3.0 8x4. Google Fiber is expanding in my area so it kind of sucks that I upgraded modems just six months ago as Google will use different equipment.

I always rent the modem. The last time I bought one the cable company blamed the modem manufacturer for the problems I was having. So I switched it out for a rented one and still had the same problems. They finally sent someone out and found problems in the line coming from the pole. Ever since then I rent the modem because technically they are responsible for the connection up to that point before it gets to your router and they cant pass the blame on to someone else.

For TWC I would go with SB6183.. 16x4 Modem with up to 300mbit internet.
Once your area gets MAXX your 50mbit should turn to 300mbit for free. You need a 16x4 modem to get 300mbit...
An 8x4 modem like the SB6141 will only get 100mbit max internet from TWC.
>>52123987
lol who rents a modem?
even me mum doesn't
>>52129517
Same here, I don't want to buy a modem then all of a sudden. It doesn't work for some reason.
At least with the rental one, you get their support.

>renting a modem ever
Why are amerifats so stupid?
Comcast put out a new modem for 1 person who got Fiber-speeds, might wanna look into that model as well
>>52124377
Why rent a modem in the first place then ask /g/ how to go about buying one?
