I use them for different purposes.
Desktop - Dedicated Video Editing / Gaming
Laptop 1 - Word Processing / Programming / School
Laptop 2 - Got for free with a broken screen and no HDD, installed new ones for $100. Dedicated for torrents and WAD gaming.
iPad - Light photo editing, Skype/Facetime, Netflix / Recipes while I shit or cook.
Phone - Phone calls, pictures, Waze (GPS app).
The iPad was a gift and I kind of had to ham up the excitement but I've learned to love it. I would not buy it for myself but I'm glad I have it. I even got a little game for my cat to tap fish.

Do you really think I could survive without my computers? Jesus christ, I don't even have friends. If one day somebody could take away all my hardware and ability to get new electronics I would kill myself.
a desktop computer has better cooling and easier replacement of parts than a notebook. Also, the keyboard is stuck at the screen for most notebooks. If you're already using a different screen, keyboard and mouse you might as well balance the wear and tear over another box instead of relying on the notebook alone.

And a laptop is mobile, unlike the desktop computer. It allows you to use it in a much more flexible and healthy way (i.e. you can change your position while watching porn). Also you can take it with you and leave at any time.
