So, /g/ is assigned to choose a OS to a spaceship control system.

What OS would it be?
>>

One of those Real Time OSs they use on aeroplane systems and nuclear power plants.

Without further investigation I'd say debian because it is stable.

It's a dumb question.

But if you REALLY had to rely on a single one, probably QNX, because it's realtime *nix.

Also because neutrino desktop was goat.

There wouldnt be an OS.

Anyone who uses gentoo/ any off-brand linux disto is just trying to justify using a bad OS instead of something decent and streamlined, e.g. OSX

Guy you replyed to here, you just proved my point, a dipshit running a bad linux setup probably thinking it makes him top dog because he has a multiboot setup.

because i like both distros and wanted to see if i could setup both with a shared /boot and /home partition.
Which in fact works.
I'd go full void, but arch still has the wider availability in packages, and also serves as backup system.

i like linux.
i like to play gta v which doesn't run on them.

Linux is about freedom of choice and i chose to try a new distro with the backup of the distro i had on for a few years. Simple as that. Or did i brag once about it inmy replies?

NASA has used Debian and an abstraction layer called OSAL for almost everything since 2013.

If NASA builds a new shuttle, the software needs of it will be handled by Debian Stable.

Sadly not everywhere in the US space industry is on Linux. But on the ISS, yes.

I'd use it.

The only problem I can think of is that LCARS was designed to look high-tech and futuristic, but applying that design aesthetic to modern-day UIs and programs might not work out too well.
>>
>>52126185
It looks like some people have tried to set things up to look LCARS-y. This image is claimed to be a conky configuration on Ubuntu. But I do not see an actual config file. . .
>>

VxWorks or Integrity.

>implying that gives you anywhere near the performance of an RTOS.
>>
>>52118449
Linux, what else?

It's the obvious choice, the only thing that is high-level enough to be fixed in flight and also the OS kernel with the most considerable testing on all kinds of production servers that can't have outages... from ATM and ticket machines to national billion dollar - ish supercomputers.
>>
>>52126433
That's a good start, but for it to work ideally it'd need a full suite of everyday apps built with a LCARS UI toolkit.

Really, I think it could work nicely as an alternative touch-based UI if fleshed out well. It's certainly more obvious/learnable than some of the insane implicit-ness/undiscoverability you see in touch OSes now.
>>
>>52126450
What did they use on Curiosity? Was it VxWorks?
>>
>>52118449

they use linux in space
>>
>>52126506
Yeah. It would be silly on a desktop with mouse/keyboard only. And that conky is not interactive--you would need probably a new DE essentially, or at least a very heavily altered and configured version of an extant DE.

That would be neat. I would try it.

Yeah, almost anything important designed in the last few years uses VxWorks. NASA, SpaceX use it for almost everything now. I use it for my job as well.

RTOSs are far more stable than any run-of-the-mill linux distro because they're not designed for "muh features," they're designed to work.

The guys working on the panel effects for TNG did an incredible job. They hold up much better through time and seem more feasible than the control panels in the original Star Trek. Really great forward-looking design.
