Isn't the point of RAID to protect data through redundancy? How did they manage to fuck it up so bad?
>>
>>52115143
One of their raid controllers failed in a raid 50
>>
>>52115152
Yep. I mean, it's a big fuckup on their part, but I can see where you would assume that server grade RAID cards would be safe.
>>
>>52115177
The card itself wasn't actually at fault. Their motherboard was fucked and it corrupted the firmware of the raid card
>>
>>52115177
The whole point of RAID is no single point of failure.
These dumb fucks had a single point of failure.
It's entirely their fault.
>>
>>52115152
isn't the entire point of those is you can replace the card with an identical one and not have to rebuild the array
>>
>>52115215
They didn't have a backup of the array profile to import into a new card
>>

>>
>>52115056
BTW they DID end up fixing it after a bunch of shit. They didn't lose anything in the end, but it was awful seeing everything they went through to get their data back.
>>
>>52115342
those children will never amount to anything anyways. if they aren't watching linus they'd be watching minecraft videos.
>>
>>52115152
Note that it potentially was a MOBO issue, which would have been the only single point of failure.

>isn't the entire point of those is you can replace the card with an identical one and not have to rebuild the array
Yes

> They didn't have a backup of the array profile to import into a new card

Any decent array controller will have the array data on both the controller and the drives. If you got a shit tier adapter, you deserve this.
>>
>>52115215
Doesn't even have to be identical, I've taken a single array through three different LSI cards and I've never had a problem having them import the config.
>>
>>52115215
>>52115698
Also, on top of that, if you remember the config, any decent card will allow you to create an array with the same configuration but choose to not initialize it, which will get the array working again.
The only 2 things that matter there are stripe size and the order of the drives, and there's only so many combinations of those (not to mention most people leave the stripe size as-is).

Linus got the biggest break out of any tech Youtuber.

He used all the high end products from the NCIX warehouse to grow his Youtube channel.

Linus really has no clue about tech. He reads spec sheets, he reads cue cards, he gets information from the companies before others. He reads forums, etc.

His side kick 'Slick' is even worse. Dude went to school for programming but he's as a dumb as a rock. Everytime he tries to interject he makes a dumb fucking comment. He's just a typical awkward gamer nerd.

Putting twenty fucking four SSDs in an array is just moronic, it's asking for trouble.
If they really needed that much storage they could just use hard drives (~6 in an array can saturate 10GbE) with SSD caching.

It didn't, he's talking bullshit.

The motherboard firmware did fuck up, the PCI-e took a fucking shit and sent corrupted data to the RAID cards.

>>
>>52115143
No, it's to protect availability through redundancy. It takes a lot less time to get a server back up with raid compared to taking it off tape. Raid setups do not replace backups, unsurprisingly Linus is too stupid to realize this.
>>
>>52116304
>If they really needed that much storage they could just use hard drives (~6 in an array can saturate 10GbE) with SSD caching.

>>52116832

Yeah, they're no longer rolling out fiber. They're paying Telstra to replace the copper and rolling out FTTN/wireless.

Plus they've undone the legislation for separation of retail and infrastructure which means we're back to where we started with private local monopolies.

Corruption and incompetence knows no bounds in Ausland.
>>
Reminder: the average age of a Linus fan is like 13. Is it surprising he doesn't know shit about real IT?
>>
>>52116767
You notice the wire management also in his server rack, and generally within the whole office, he has parts strewn all over the place! Isn't is supposed to be a professional enviroment?
>>
>>52116875

You DO realize how his sever works, right?

RAIDs of HDDs are too slow for all his employees to do their work during the day so they edit and render shit to his SSD RAID array, then back that up to the HDDs nightly. Though I'm guessing it wasn't nightly at the time. It is now, though.

This happened during a backup to the HDDs.

He does know you still need backups.
>>
>>52116902
Looks like a professional environment to me.

>>52116875
I'm pretty sure they had a backup system in place but it was really too infrequent for what they do. Like losing a weeks worth of video is a big deal when you're aiming to put out a dozen or so videos a week.

Which is why they set up a new backup solution to back up shit nightly off site.

>>
>>52116919
>RAIDs of HDDs are too slow
Bullshit, for sequential access you get bottlenecked by the network (1GbE = 1 HDD, 10GbE = 6-7 HDDs or 2 SSDs), and for random you have caching (OS's file cache handles random reads well enough, RAID card's write cache handles writing safely).
And it's not like SSD caching isn't a thing, RAID cards have had that feature for a long time. They could have just used an array of 6-7 HDDs and an SSD or two for caching and it would have gotten the best of both worlds.
>>
>>52116820
desu the only player ive never had trouble with is totem
vlc yes, mpv yes, mpc-hc is a fucking meme--yes. ffplay & avplay are too simple. everything else is garbage for videos.
>>
>>52116919
If I remember correctly this server (whonnock?) handled all their inprogress shit which was moved to the Vault when completed, which was the proper, on site, storage server with better backup and redundancy features. Whonnock favoured speed over that.

>>52116958
Wasn't their Whonnock server set up so they literally edited the videos from the server rather than copying to and from it? In that situation the instant random read times of the SSDs would be a benefit over the HDDs even if the HDDs could saturate the link in sequential data transfer.

>In that situation the instant random read times of the SSDs
Again, that's what caching is for. The server presumably isn't doing shit otherwise so it can use nearly all of it's RAM as a read cache, and that's ignoring the fact that both the RAID cards and the drives themselves have read caches too.

This is what I get from my storage server thanks to tons of caching.

He gets free licenses from NCIX and Microsoft, and understands he would need a lot more money to just be able to function on a Linux server.

He built his business off of the connections he had, and made it function reasonably well. He is willing to put up with a bunch of shitty IT, because in the long run once he settles and stops trying to upgrade his server, his company will run itself. He can have no change in tech state and pump out new videos left and right only needing free drives from WD and Kingston.

Again, that's what they have replaced the Whonnock server with after this shit.
Most likely when they set up this shit they had 24 SSDs on hand and needed a server, so there it went.
When shit went down (not a fault of the SSDs themselves of course) they set up a new server using unraid which has something like four SSDs as a cache and a bunch of HDDs as the main storage.

i think they just need him to have GNU/Linux so they can SSH into his machine and use the "custom tool" on his machine themselves. Luke used *buntu before to test out if his computer works on the last scrapyard wars.

was that the same server as the one he built several weeks ago using an angle grinder and hot glue gun?

What sort of advantage would there be to using one?

some proprietary tools he doesn't use.

The mobo failed, which is to be expected since it was an asrock... like who the fuck uses that shit on a storage server with no backups

Lol, I remember him reviewing some EK prebuilt custom water cooling loop, in a 10 minute video they mentioned like 2 seconds "yeah btw, the fucking fittings broke apart and literally spilled water all over our $1,000 hardware, BUT OTHER THAN THAT IT'S FINE GUIZE PLS BUY IT AND ALSO SUBSKRIB TO OUR AMAZON BOOKMARK KTHX XD"
>>
>>52117512
You can click some buttons and something will somehow work.

Probably not like they intended to and not fast or reliable, but at least they can get it to work.

Out of them all, I think Ed actually knows most even though he looks like a retarded 14 year old with an annoying voice.
Taran knows how to edit, but is a pretentious faggot.
Berkel is the coolest, no doubt, but he seems just as clueless as Linus when it comes to actual tech lol

People don't like advice from experts, they want recommendation from their friends, schlubs like them.

If you dealing with Windows machines on your network and want good speeds (aka 10Gbit) from your Windows shares then you're better off using Windows than samba.

how does a failed motherboard would effect raid on raid cards
>>
>>52115719
How the fuck did they not instantly DD each and every single fucking one of those SSD's the moment the shit started hitting the fan?
>Nope, just pull them out of their raid cards and start fucking around, plugging them into a motherboard which totally won't end up being the bad guy in a secret twist at the end

Fuck, just realized.
He always uses server hardware for his gaming builds, but then gaming hardware for his actual prod servers.
Fuck me sideways.

He had redundant power supplies and server motherboard in that server. Just fucking look at it.

The fact is that Linus is good if you're tech savvy/a hardcore gamer and actually know what he's talking about. Half the people on this board probably couldn't build their on computer

Linus is a shill appealing to drooling manchildren like you who can't afford the builds he vehemently tries to shill

Building your own rig is maybe impressive for the razer-loving neanderthal you are, anybody with the IQ of a zygote can build a fucking computer you sperging retard. Fucking kill yourself already

He is an idiot who doesn't understand the material engineering and physics behind how SSDs and HDDs respectively store data, in order to realize why all businesses and servers rooms on this planet will never ever fully switch to SSD, but only use them as caching drives. He sees the potential of SSDs in regards to memory quantity, and the speed, but the most important things he ignores, or is too stupid to understand. It's like idiots who think a clock rate and number of cores are all there is to CPU performance.
An education you only need to shave off about an hour or so a day in order to attain through reading the scientific/engineering explanations and crossing the terminology with basic physics and math books in order to get the picture - both small and big.

He and his group are label readers. Let alone understanding why a RAID card/MOBO failure will fuck up all your SSDs, but rarely fuck up HDDs,
they don't even know how to run shit in Linux properly and set up preventive measures, or fix things according to that vid.
A group of retards.

At least those TekSyndicate faggots have Wendell, who is one of the few tech literate, properly educated people who know their limits and think in detail, on YouTube. Albeit the rest of them are dumbshits.
LinusTechTips lacks even that one educated person. They are a bunch of retards who need mental support on the sideline in order to remind them how to fucking breathe by exhaling and inhaling.

Surely SSDs are beneficial as they can saturate the 10gb links he has in his network

If Linus is so shit at everything /g/, why has he been so successful?
If the masses of /g/ are so much better at everything than him, why do half of live in your mother's basement masturbating to anime and Linux while he has a successful business, a wife and a child?
>>
>>52120132
Because we have a dignity. Also we're autistic so we wouldn't be able to shill in front of a camera with a straight face.
>>
>>52119747
They are beneficial in speeds, and that's about it.
However good luck when a power-outage happens which may fuck them up. Whereas the HDDs will retain all the data as it is in physical form and the only thing that stopped is the head.
Good luck when a RAID card fucks up like in this case because it will affect all SSDs, while HDDs will still retain data on the platters.
Compared to HDDs though, SSDs are reliant on firmware and software, which means a single bug will fuck it all up.
As far as data retrieval goes, you can still retrieve from HDD platters even when the head and everything goes fucked, as the data is basically in the form of physical particles being oriented in a certain direction. SSDs though? Tough luck.

There's also the matter of cell cycles on SSDs and the way they cycle data through charges on a systematic basis. Meaning, if you have a situation where you are switching data on a massive rate (not massive amounts of data, but rather a constant cycling of data even if in bits - a problem known to those who tried using Web Scraping/RSS with SSDs), you are going to burn out that shit in a record time.

In the name of speed and bandwidth, too much is sacrificed.
That's why no educated and rational corporation and business on this planet uses SSD servers, unless you are doing it as a critical measure that forgoes all safety and parity as an acceptable sacrifice.

They weren't fucked because they were SSDs in this case. The PCI-e bus shat the fucking bed and was sending corrupt data to the RAID card.
The data was still on the SSDs which was why they were able to restore it and you haven't a clue what you're talking about.
>>
>>52119797
Is your motherboard has a SATA controller on the PCI-e bus, most with over 4 ports have this, and you are using them then the same thing could happen with a software RAID.
