I work on consumer builds for living, but this is my take on it. EVGA is very middle ground but good and stable. MSI has your best potential for speed and I haven't had any hiccups this generation, and stock nVidia is just sexy and best for OC\waterloop.

No idea. But all of the cards that currently have DX12 support miss off a few things here and there in hardware.

I bought a gtx 960 for 1080 gaming. Got a 4gb MSI model for $200 usd. Did not want to got over that. Did I do good, or is the r9380 really THAT much better? I'm mostly playing Fallout, World of Warcraft, and some FPS games and getting 60 fps in most of the with AA turned off. I want to try witcher 3 but seems the 960 has a hard time with that one unless a lot of settings are turned down.

Well, Nvidias next line of GPu's Pascal comes out I think Q3 or something 2016 and will have big performance increases over Maxwell and AMD's 400 series Artic Islands is also getting a big jump and looks to compete really well against Pascal (14nm vs 16nm) and might be out around Q2 2016

So wait if money is an issue or just get the 980 TI and use that until the next GPU's drop in price.

Any other AMD users noticing higher temps after the last driver update? Whatever crimson update came a couple days ago made my card jump from ~30C to a consistent 50C at idle, which I know isn't going to kill the card, but the increased fan noise is annoying.

With the advent of bitcoin mining it is even riskier to buy used GPUs.

>>
>>52117364
Dremel, dude.
Cards usually have a bit of useless plastic which makes them longer which you can cut off.
You can also trim the heatsink so long as you don't cut into any heatpipes.
Or you could make space in the case like by cutting into the hard drive rack or something.

That sounds like a bug where the card doesn't clock down when idle, or you've got something on your system that puts a load on the card you're not aware of.
Make sure it isn't the latter, and report the issue to AMD so they can fix it. There's a link to report in the preferences of the Crimson interface.

Is FreeSync/Gsync worth it ? (1440p if it matters).

The differences between gtx970 and R9 390 are minimal right ? 1440p monitor again, 60hz. Should I give some more € and go for the R9 390X ? I can afford it but I don't want to spent money like an idiot.

No. As a Fury X owner, trust me, I know that I might not have that particular card, but the difference between a stock 980ti and stock Fury X is minimal and even with OC, you're not gonna see full ultra full 2560x1440~144hz all the time.
>>
>>52122485
Damn I wish I had gotten Fury X instead of paying a lot more for 980Ti. Could've even gone for double Fury X setup now that I think of it.

Oh well you can't always get what you think you are getting.
>>
>>52122485
>you're not gonna see full ultra full 2560x1440~144hz all the time
This is why wasting so much money on a 980Ti or Fury X is stupid. It would be better to get a low high range card like the 390 or the 970 while waiting for the next gen. If the next series of GPUs can't do 1440p at 144Hz, then we're absolutely fucked.

Would've bought double Fury X month ago if I was wise but threw away money for nvidia jews fuck me
>>
>>52122565
Normally I'd agree with you, but in my case, I figured why not ONLY because:
1. I wasn't actually expecting next gen to drop a node at the time, since there was a lot of rumour/speculation about issues with the process and who was actually going to fab AMD's cards.
2. I'd just gotten a 2560x1440~144 freesync monitor, and I wanted to get every aspect out of it that I could. I knew that I could wait for the Fury non X, but I also guessed that there'd be issues like VRM cooling. (Which there is.)
I was using a 7950 at the time, so I wanted the top of the line card to get my freesync and as high FPS as possible at all times.

When the next generation of cards come out, I'm seriously considering selling off the Fury X for as much as I can make off of it and upgrading to the next version; that or waiting for the refreshed version (aka, the 500 series).

>>
>>52110126
Definitely msi if it's around 160-200. It has awesome performance
>>
>>52123883
There are a variety of things that could be happening.

If you don't know what you are doing, Overclocking isn't for you any ways.

>updating mobo bios
>correct drivers
>correct thermals
>correct Overclocking software in the first place
>correct benchmarking capabilities

Honestly if you didn't at least make sure the above four criteria were met before you started you should just stop. If you're honestly interested in learning, do some research on the above first.

After that, it's entirely possible that there is something ELSE wrong with the card depending on what it does when you over clock it, because maxwell cards (I've over clocked 960's, 970's, and my 980 Ti) will just blink out, the reset the clocks to factory when a clock fails. If yours is doing ANYTHING ELSE then you might have a faulty card.
>>
>>52123944
I've updated my Impact VIII last month and there isn't newer BIOS for it.
>Correct drivers.
Well the most up2date drivers from nVidia (through GeForce Experience program)
>Thermals
Well that'd be an issue, but it seems be consistently showing same numbers when not stressed and when stressed.
>OC Software
I used EVGA Precision X.
>Benchmarking
? nigga I just opened GTA V and shit crashed with anything but +100mhz - and screen just goes to black.

Works fine without overclocks.
>>
>>52124000
Bios - Check
Drivers - fail, latest drivers aren't always the best for overclocking.
Thermals - what're your load temps? if they're above 80 at stock clocks then you need to adjust your fan profile to be more aggressive or apply liquid cooling
OC Software - Precision X is shit, use MSI Afterburner

GTA V is a good test of OC stability, so is 3DMark Fire Strike.

Does the screen go permanently black or does it blink out and then back in?

My temps are at 41-44 in game use, I have watercooling.

It goes permanently black and then I just press power button down.

>MSI Afterburner.
OK, I'll try this software. Just figured EVGA's own would be apt.

I have tried overclocking with two different driver sets, the current and one before.

btw. crashes instantly and doesn't load any graphics at all is how it crashes which is weird since other GPUs I've had have all tried to load some graphics.
>>
>>52124071
Jet is great. I used the 20% coupons in November and saved a lot on my new build's ram, mobo and ssd.
>>
>>52124099
Yeah try MSI Afterburner.

After that, you might wanna contact EVGA and tell them what's going on.

They might be like "Well this isn't our problem" but they might also have some tips for you. The way it handles over clocking isn't normal.

Those temps are great btw.

Laptops with such GPUs, why? They're heavy, they have huge screens with bad panels and awful angles (compared to VESA stand monitor), they heat up like hell compared to well built mITX/mATX let alone ATX - they cost WAY too much for what they give.

Why?
>>
>>52124684
>gaming
>laptop
It's a bad idea now, but it won't be when things become super powerful without burning everything to the ground. We'll see nice stuff with 14nm, but it's really going to grow with the next generations. Gaming laptops that don't weight a ton are already here with mobile GPUs really close to their desktop counterparts, I would suggest not getting one even if you have everything to spend. Also, you can build a tower that blows the shit out of a laptop with more than your $1500 delta.
>>
>>52124684
a micro atx or itx case will keep your components alive and last longer than the laptop design. it's way cheaper and you can get a better display.

>>52129531

>>
>>52129495

Only the GPU is worth waiting for. Skylake is expensive right now for no reason but all other components go on sale regularly; mobo, ram, storage.

You can build Skylake/ddr4 or Haswell/ddr3 right now, but unless you find an aweome deal for current GPU or don't care about next gen at release, then you don't wait.

New cards are going to be limited in quantities, experience shorage, and be expensive just like usual. The market probably won't be established and healthy until Q3 2016.

>>52129531
Sell now, wait for later, possibly save $ for higher end (which release first)

or

Keep 960, save some $ over time, sell 960 for whatever, then upgrade?

GPU prices keep fluctuating; November 970's were sub-$300, Dec they're $340 again and now the 390 is cheaper. Who knows if current gen will even drop when Pascal releases. I personally don't think so because the market won't have a variety of new GPU's until like next Winter.
