Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

No news.

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I am thankful that there are good laptops around compared to the shitfest of Acer and Edge series that hang around.

I got a Thinkpad Yoga 14 for christmas. Not even that mad. It's new and all and I really like the touch/stylus drawing tablet screen (which I use very often).

At the moment it is running Botnet(tm) 10. Aka Win10. But I want to put NixOS onto it. Since Nix is love, nix is life. Does anybody have any experiance with linux on a Thinkpad Yoga 14? Model has intel 5500 as graphics and an i7.

Did not find anything on the thinkwiki. Screen Input is absolutely necessary for Krita and other artsy shit.

Fuck off niggers, do the IPS mod or get a carbon or even better a MAC!!

You won't get a better deal, you are supposed to be productive not to stare at pretty colors. Vertical viewing angles don't matter because the hinges allow 180 degree movement of the screen.
>>
>>52106827
I have the same one and it's actually great

>>

Could be that resolution only. I am comparing my Dell's 1660x900 vs my T410 1440x900 and while both have more or less the same color reproduction, the Dell's worse on my eyes.

You care about colors? Get an external monitor. Do you realize that this computers were made for business people in mind and not meme photoshoppers internet surfers?

>>
>>52106695
Build quality is great. Installed Xubuntu (and Compton) and everything was good to go immediately. Great experience so far and battery life is great with the 68+. Coming from an X220 the 1080p display is a breath of fresh air, and my X220 had IPS.

Velcro on the laptop lid and underside of the HDD and it's done.
>>
>>52109010
yeah might do that. not super sturdy though. would prefer something to cover it so I can throw it in a bookbag and pretend like it's just built in

honestly the dream would be something like the setup jeff goldblum has in independence day, where his phone has a clip right on his laptop lid. I always thought that was cool as shit, now I have a laptop, butloads of accessories and side devices, and nowhere to store/attach to the laptop. it's a shame
>>
What are the differences in build between a Thinkpad Yoga 14 and a T450? The T450 seems like a much better laptop, via specs for price.
>>
>>52109070
it is. Build quality is better but that doesn't make the Yoga a thinkpad edge tier piece of garbage. It still has a carbon fiber finish and a rollcage

the difference is that the yoga has the touch screen and shorter battery life. t450s has no touch screen and better battery life
>>
Incorrect. The T450 has the option of a 1600x900 touch screen. AFAIK it ain't an IPS panel though.

Yoga seems more to be the kind of "Hey, how would a thinkpad look like if it'd fucked a tablet" thing.

How long have you been looking for it? I'm also from a shitty country. I bought myself a x201 for 110euros. At first all I saw were prices 180-240, sometimes 160. Then a few for 140, few for 120 but with defects. After looking almost everyday at least once I managed to find one for 110e in good condition. So take your time if your money is tight and you have time.

15" Thinkpads generally have the best screens. Excellent colors and resolutions. X220 does have IPS, but the color reproduction is crap, it's only something like 60% sRGB while the T/W520 screens can hit 95% and go up to 1080p.

Also I just got some replacement trackpoints and holy shit, the soft rim is so good. Feels so much more accurate than the soft dome and my finger can't slip off. Haven't tried the classic dome yet, but it seems like it would only compound the issues I had with the soft dome.

So a T520 or W520 with a 1080p screen would be the best I can get (without installing my own 3rd party panel)?
>>
>>52106413
X220 with higher res screen and a docking option like the old Advanced Docks that let you use a desktop GPU, except without the size limit that those docks had. That'd basically be perfect. Newer internal specs are a given, of course. Give me a full voltage Haswell instead of a ULV Broadlell though.
>>
>>52109922

Personally I'd buy a stripped x200 or x201 and build it up with 8gb RAM, SSD, new OEM 9-cell, spare chinkshit 6-cell, AC adapter, 12V DC car adapter.

You can also probably get a scuffed up x220 for that (dunno about bongland), but it will probably come with some compromises (HDD instead of SSD, "good" battery etc).

I prefer a maxed out, perfectly customized older model to a middling newer one for the same money. You can of course max out that 220 but it will cost you more to do so.
>>
>>52110454
Yeah. I have a T510 with only a 900p screen and it's still gorgeous, absolutely destroys the one in my T420.

I was considering the T450, but the specs for $850 are just garbage and the build quality is just not worth the money you're paying. 1366x768 on a 14" in 2016-ish is just ridiculous. 1080p seems perfectly fine, though.

Have any of you had any success with a triple boot system Windoze X OS X and Linux distro X? I have X220 Tablet and an X220 with compatible parts. I read the following tutorials:

http://lifehacker.com/5877605/follow-these-best-practices-when-dual-booting-os-x-and-windows-7-on-a-hackintosh

http://x220.mcdonnelltech.com/

http://www.tonymacx86.com/snow-leopard-laptop-support/18619-lenovo-x220-2.html

http://lifehacker.com/the-always-up-to-date-guide-to-building-a-hackintosh-o-5841604

It seems like the x220 guide wants us to boot to different drives, I'm ok with this, but I prefer not to so I can use the msata drive as a shared storage space. Other triple boot instructions call for varied processes, I'm wondering if any one process has worked for anyone with this specific build or if any problems were encountered in the process. I don't particularly want to use OS X but I need it for a class next semester.

>>
>>52113626

Yes I did. Thank you. So for future reference I can boot windoze and linux on the same drive and OS X on a different drive for the simplest method.

Otherwise Follow Hackintosh install instructions then the guide you provided.

For clarification a few questions:

1. The traditional sata drive is the faster of the two drives yes? For some reason I got it into my head that the msata was the faster in the x220

2. Can I do the additional linux partitions using this method? I have a fat drive that needs to have some mint arch gentoo and other lovely distros all up in that ass.

3. Are there any specific issues with whitelisting or other shits not covered in any of the above tutorials regarding the x220?

Thanks much

>Vt-d, Vt-x all models
>at least 1 USB 3.0
>Mini-DP instead of or in addition to VGA
>NO touchscreen variants, especially not with stylus (scratches on used models)

Maybes:
>>1280x800, 1600x1000, 1920x1200 screen variants, easily swappable
>stereo speakers above LCD
>backlit keyboard option
>a (tiny) touchpad like x201 so normies buy it and I can get it cheap later

Moonshots:
>Intel removes TPM etc NSAware, full libreboot compatibility
>available aluminum/titanium/magnesium case?

Really just a new motherboard I could put in my X200 would be pretty cash. Even just a 3rd gen i5/HD4000 would be pretty sweet, Iris/Iris Pro would be icing on the cake.

1. mSata is sataII regular is sataIII, but really, the only difference is sequential read and write, so unless you oftrn do hibernation on your 16GB ram machine there is no difference, no seek time and lots of IOPS are defined by drive you choose, not slots (also I'm pretty pissed at anybody, especialy on /g/ for recommending samsung especially ssds especially after that firmware scandal that was here few months ago, I just do not trust them)

2. not sure, not there yet, but I'd say that yes ,why not? It seems only logical that it should work since you have to set up lot of shit manually

3. most should be covered but yeah, get newest unlocked bios mod and new wifi card, recommending DW1510, got cheapest of ebay (actually two of them) and got no problem so far, you don't need drivers even for windows (except ebay said new and they didn't look like that, oh well not broken - not fixing)

For a stepmom trying to get in your pants, the mandatory fully specced t420. High resolution model.

For a normal stepmom, the same but the higher resolution panel could lead to conflict.

For a grandpa the W701DS.

For a dog the x220t with bark recognition software. Be sure to replace the palmrest with the paw-print reading one.

For a niece that just got braces I would suggest a T410, she will surely appreciate the 16:10 pre consumerist-america aspect ratio.

>>
>>52114920

ebay? The battery was probably used to the max so just get an OEM one.

The charger could be fixed, just sever the tip and solder a new cable that will connect the tip to the brick.
>>
>>52114979
How do I make sure I'm buying a real OEM battery and not some bullshit scrapped from another laptop? I found some on Amazon but it seems the company is one of many owned by one guy thay has a habit of selling shit and never sending it, not accepting returns etc.
>>
>>52114979
And on another note - I was thinking of getting a new 9cell from Dell's parts site, but they charge about $150 for just the battery, and another $80 for the charger.
>>
>>52115050

Get a generic charger, it won't make a difference (it will probably weigh less). My thinkpad came with an aftermarket charger and it works wonders.

As for the battery just get that new one, but $150 is way too much... even lenovo charges less for the 9 cell. Some anon said that Anker's are alright quality wise; they will have less capacity than an original one.
>>
>>52115086
I mean, I found some 9 cell supposedly OEM batteries on Amazon for about $45, but it's kinda sketchy. Not sure I wanna drop $60+ for a possibly not OEM battery. Is it often worth the gamble to try something random from Ebay or Amazon or whatever or should I find a proper name brand?
>>

>How do I make sure I'm buying a real OEM battery and not some bullshit scrapped from another laptop?

buy directly from the OEM ya dingus
>>
>>52115185

If the amazon product page is not from Dell then it is a "OEM compatible", meaning it will fit but it has lower capacity and quality.

I wish it would be easy to rebuild the batteries, well it is but apparently if you desolder the older cells the chip goes kaput. Has anyone here rebuilt a modern thinkpad battery?

Judge by reviews or search in a Dell forum, that's your best bet.

Wondering the same myself. If you buy once from Amazon, Newegg or somewhere with a 30day guarantee and a 1 year warranty (do your research, sometimes they add crap like that they will only replace 100% dead batteries etc. etc. to scam people out of using their warranties)
>>
>>52113031
>carbon fiber and rollcage
>trackpoint
>consumer
>>
>>52115185

Replacement batteries tend to come in 3 kinds:

1. $10-$25 chinkshit. Label conspicuously the manufacturer logo ("DELL", "LENOVO" etc). Typically 60-80% OEM capacity, sometimes good lifetime sometimes shit. Can be subdivided into class 1a: total shit - they didn't even bother trying with the label or class 1b: kinda ok - tried to copy the label but just left a blank space where the OEM name should be or at least made an effort at a 'trustworthy' label.

2. $25-$50 "NEW GENUINE OEM" battery. Either authentic (ghost shift maybe) or damn good fakes. Label looks basically identical to OEM, with only irregularities being additional stickers or barcodes.

3. $$$ direct OEM. Guaranteed Quality^tm, and god damn you're paying for it.

Take your battery out, and look at the label on it. Find the cheapest battery you can find on ebay that has that exact label. Usually I search "$model battery" and then ctrl-F "genuine".

I got burned (figuratively) on a class 1a $15 chinkshit 9-cell, something's weird with the ACPI and it won't boot the computer sometimes. Decent success with a $25 class 1b battery, totally works just has 48 W*h compared to the 56 W*h OEM. Had complete success with a $40 class 2 9-cell, it's either authentic or a good enough fake as to be indistinguishable.

First thing you should do is run
 cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/uevent
and verify that ENERGY_FULL_DESIGN and ENERGY_FULL match what you're expecting.
>>
>>52115773
You forgot 2a/3a which is legit genuine but NOS that's already a year to 2 or 3 years old. Max capacity not quite lvl 3 but not shit like 1 or probably fake like 2.

The new keyboards feel better than the "old" ones, but have worse layout. The big delete and escape keys and the extra row was really nice to have.
It depends on what you prefer, I have a x230 and have zero complaints about the keyboard.

Now, comparing the chiclet and "old style" keyboards with the OLD keyboards, the old ones are so much better feeling, while having the classic layout. Best of both worlds.
>>

The new keyboards feel better than any chiclet keyboard I've ever used, that's no lie. There is plenty of feedback, and it feels good.

The problem with it is I hate the spacing between the keys, and the fucking layout is atrocious. I like the old keyboard because it feels just like typing on a desktop keyboard to me. Playing vidya is also much easier on it because you don't have to stretch your hand further.

It's really just a useless trend hop because Apple did it. Nobody (and I mean nobody) can pretend that it was for any other reason. Man hours went in to redesigning this keyboard that had no reason to be redesigned. For what, because you might catch a few people with the NEW thinkpad look?

The 21st century has been the death of the niche market concept. You had businesses and people who would loyally purchase your product because nobody else offered it. That's why Dell's latitude and precision line has become popular, it has been picking up where Lenovo left off and decided "you know, we need another consumer brand of laptop in our lineup"

To be honest, there is literally no reason they can't build a chasis that can accommodate either style of keyboard and offer them both as an option. If they wanted to make a smart business decision, that would be it.

if you removed the sloping edges in the previous keys had and just had flat sides the spacing would be the same?

>maybe make it a tad thinner and lighter (if possible without sacking any features, fucker is heavy as fuck)
>16:10 1080p IPS
>9 cell battery option
>expand the screen further to be larger but with thinner bezels
>MUCH MORE ACCURATE PEN JESUS

Literally all I want. Sadly, I don't think we will ever get a tablet style thinkpad again. Tablet PC's are dead in a time period where the technology is better.
>>
>>52119072
Okay, not that great though. The new touch sensors on the P50/P70 looks a lot better.
Swipe sensors have always been finnicky.

thanks for scrot, completely different driver to what i have by the looks of it, can you show me your version info so i can get that same driver?
>>

yeah i probably need a new one... but don't have the money right now... still fine for now as I don't use it for a long time, typically at night while watching tv so this is adequate for now.

The win10 update comes with a realtek thing that runs on the background.
It's caled FMAPP.exe.
Kill the fucker, it makes no difference to the audio. See if the lag stops.

Also, stop it from being run on boot.
>>
where do I get a "new" battery for my thinkpad? do I just use ebay and hope I don't get scammed?
>>
>>52119232
If you disable the trackpad (like I did) on the BIOS, win10 installs the driver I have. If you have trackpad enabled, it will install the ultranav driver (the one you have).
>>
How viable is to rebuild a battery? I mean recent thinkpad's battery such as the i-core series.

Some tripfag said that if you disconnect the old batteries the whole chip goes kaput.

oh ;-; i disabled it in the touchpad settings, guess if i disable touchpad from bios then uninstall driver, then check for updates, i should get your driver.

>>52119318
nope ;-;
thing is, if i scroll with two finger tap, its fine, i think its the driver im using, will switch my driver now.

Like what? For medium-light weight machines the thinkpad is still king. Only real competition on the workstation front is dell precision, but even they got BTFO by the P series

Ok boys,

I've finally got around to get NixOS onto my SDCard. Couldn't be bothered to search for my USB Drive and had an adapt0r and a raspi microsd card laying around.

Currently putting NixOS onto SD, will reboot soon. Wish me luck. I hope everything works as fine as it should.
>>
>>52119805

Turns out that ThinkPad can't into boot from SD. Should've known. It's almost 2016 dammit.

Well found USB and extracting right now. Hopefully this works better.

So I'm tinkering around in Ubuntu MATE on that desktop that is in the background
Installing KDE desktop on top of MATE cause I want to play with it as well

It has a 1.86GHz Core2Duo, 1GB of RAM (2 512MB sticks), and a small ass 160GB spinning rust disk that I think is IDE.

Can this rust bucket run KDE for it's life?

>>52119700
