This. The best DE is the one that suits the user best. That's the nice thing about Linux. The elitist attitude of using "the best" distro or DE turns people away from using Linux.

I'm actually looking for a new DE/distro to use. My only experience to Linux was using Elementary OS for 2 months. I loved it but its too unstable for daily use. Also for some reason mozc refused to work (I need it to type in Japanese).

What distro/DE you guys recommend? I've been thinking about Ubuntu GNOME, Kuduntu or Xubuntu. I'm also interested in tilling WMs, but it seems complicated to set up one and make it looks good.

It depends on the distro, but a minimal installation will generally boot to text mode by default. Then you can configure your window manager and other programs in an .xinitrc file (google it) and use startx to start the X server.

Debian netinstall, Arch, and Slackware are all good choices for an install that boots to console. For an installation that's already configured to boot to graphical mode, you can generally change this either by disabling the login manager service or changing the default runlevel; these both depend on your particular distro.

XFCE:
>halted development, a bit spartan but good
>the simplest DE out there
KDE:
>why can't I hold all this features,
>still runs fast on my gay ass 10 years old laptop
>too much startup time though
Gnome:
>System proxy not working
>"I wish I was Firefox" extensions
>No support for theme coloring, you can choose only between light and dark, dark theme doesn't even work with gtk2 programs
>to be fair, theme colors are available only as predefined packets (like Murrine-Blue, Murrine-Orange, etc...)
>lacking way too many settings, feels more like using a phone OS than a desktop one
LXDE:
>lmao I'm Windows ME
>am I windows yet?
>pretty responsive after all

These are the DEs I've used first-hand, and the worst has been Gnome so far, it's missing so many basic features and most of the useful ones are hidden in the extensions store, which by the way doesn't always works right away.

I've recently made the move from LXDE to LXQt. It does everything I want a DE to do with minimal overhead.

why don't they integrate xfwm with compton or compiz? This is getting embarrasing

I just want to know from people who use it,because I want a change from xfce and the small crap that are getting on my nerves although it is #1 DE for me. So LXQt needs Compton too?

I don't know, that's up to the Lubuntu team.

Well in Arch I just typed in
 sudo pacman -S lxqt
and then added "exec startlxqt" to my ~/.xinitrc file. I'm sure you can install it in Lubuntu and use your login manager to switch between LXDE and LXQt if you want to try it out.

twm is obnoxiously nasty
if I had to use an old ass WM, I'd use mwm, shit's comfy as fuck (also, almost all of the keybinds are literally the ones used in Windows 2)

Kubuntu 1404 is good but can be a bit confusing only because it offers so many options /which is good but can be a bit too much for a non tech person/. KDE is 4.13, solid. also the software center for Kubuntu is the best from all the buntus.
Xubuntu and Lubuntu are good as well. no nonsence, simple and easy to use.
Because of openbox Lubuntu might be the most flexible for managing windows, you can tile with it and more by adding a few lines in the .config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml
