Kubuntu is nice senpai. Xubuntu is nice too.

KDE if you don't mind their skin and bloat
XFCE if you do
LXDE if you're using older hardware
GNOME or MATE if you don't like menus similar to windows for reasons
>>
GNOME
Add ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 and install gnome

KDE 4.x was tolerable. Plasma 5 is a bloated disaster.

LXDE is a good option.

Gnome is nice if you are on desktop and have decent GPU for rendering.

any dock would do + openbox, try awesome to spice it up
protip: make a wallpaper with the key combos

What is so good about openbox? I tried it, and it felt like 1990 all over again. Shitty font rendering and limited customization options. No one has time to sit there and edit files manually to setup your desktop.

Have a look at cairo dock. Is a lot lighter than unity and has some great features.
>>
>>52098277
Cairo is broken as fuck. I suggest use Plank, it is less bloated and supports drag & drop to add items.
>>
>>52098302
Nah, mate. Cairo is pretty stable. And it does support drag and drop, and has WAY more features than plank.

I don't know, seems more straght forward edit a text file, also search for a screencap or a guide where to click when you need help isn't that easy.
You're right on fonts tho, is not openbox fault, just change the font, I tweak every posible option in every software, and complicated DEs doesn't show all options.
They are limited by all the small pieces that makes the whole enviroment.

i3wm if you want to go full linux with a tiling window manager

New bodhi looks good

It has the functionality of a de with the memory usage of a simple wm

What's a good dropdown terminal to use with LXDE Ubuntu?

This.

Go for i3. It has a pretty steep learning curve but is well worth it.

GNOME for design/comfiness
KDE if you like qt
XFCE for lightweight/configurable
If your hardware can't run any of these, consider upgrading that rather than using lxde or anything.

XFCE is the only sane option

yes

sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
