Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

tar axf
>>
>>52095847
Don't use Manjaro; use Antergos.

You didn't fuck up, per se, but you're getting a crappy, offbrand Linux OS for pretty much no reason. Antergos does what Manjaro does (easy and pretty Arch-like installation) while actually using Arch repositories.

That simple fact means you can actually get help from the Arch community along with the Antergos community, which are much bigger than what Manjaro offers.

That's one of the truths you need to learn and accept about Linux: the type and amount of people willing to help you. If you're closer to a newb, there's zero reason to go towards "obscure" stuff in order to look cool (not to say that you've done that with Manjaro).

I'm in the middle of installing Arch. I've been using Ubuntu for a while, but seriously, how the fuck are you supposed to know how to install Arch without a guide? Are there hardcore linux people who just know what commands you need to do in what order, or is there official installation documentation that everyone basically follows?

Linux newbie here, how much customisation is available for the Ubuntu UI and how difficult is it?

What programs don't work on Linux?
>>
>>52096727
Arch wiki, m8. That's the official documentation.

If you're asking "is there official documentation for installing Linux OSes", then not really. There's just a standard set of shit that you have to do. It'll seem odd when you're installing Arch for the first 1-2 times, but after that, you'll understand the logic:

1) Get your basic stuff setup with some obvious commands: timedatectl and other stuff.
2) Partition, format, mount. Again, not terribly complex if you've been accustomed to it.
3) Install base system
4) Configure some necessary stuff as the system's root
5) Boot loader
6) Exit out of everything

Bada bing, bada boom, you're done.

Yo anons, I'm a winbabby that's been using Mint consistently for about 4 weeks now. I've got pretty comfortable with repositories and using deb packages. However I tried to install AMD's proprietary drivers for shits and giggles and now when I boot Mint I go into a teal screen with a box that says something like "xorg server has failed to start." Then it goes into what I think is called ttyl mode where it's just a terminal.
How do I reset my video driver? I couldn't quite understand one of the solutions involving a live CD.

Not really. There's the STALKER Mod Wiki, that's pretty helpful, but hasn't been updated in years. The Russian version has a lot more content but you have to deal with the Googlese. Other than that, I accumulated the majority of my knowledge through years of experience and browsing the GSC forums.
Just start with simple shit like editing configs, and when you get to the point where you're at the limit of what you can do with configs, hit up the forums and use the search function.
And learn Lua. Lots of it.

I'm almost always in the /sg/ thread at /vg/ for the purposes of answering obscure questions about the SDK, so make a post there if you get stcuk on anything.

>>
>>52096081
Antergos should be what architect became. Instead it's just some shit with numix icons that always has problems on installation. I could never install it with -anything- enabled as an extra feature. Not even AUR support.
>>
>>52101278
Not him but I recently installed Arch as my first distro: actually read the wiki, don't skim stuff and make sure you understand what it is teling you. Google is your friend. Always use
pacman -Syu
>>
>>52101278
About a day (I tested on a VM before I installed which DEFINITELY helped). There really isn't much I did different from the wiki, but I would STRONGLY recommend using cfdisk not parted (although that's just my preference).

Ricing after that is pretty simple, I just go
-LightDM
-Openbox (or another WM of your choice)

Themes can then be found online on place like deviantart, which you can then modify. If you can't find a program for something, just google it with the term 'arch wiki' and chances are it exists.

Another piece of advice I can give, is just use an MBR. I'm probably about to get yelled out for this, but it really saves you a heap of hassle when your make your partitions. If this is the case, when you install GRUB, you may have to use --force as it will get angry at you for using an MBR haha.

>>52101310
This too, or
pacman -Syy

It's fine haha, just remember if you make a boo-boo, restart the computer and try again by repartitioning, there's no shame in doing it more than once.

Seeing as you seem rather new to use Linux, maybe try using Antegros or Ubuntu as a first distro before you try Arch, or use a VM before you go balls deep on real hardware.

So what do you reccomend? UbuMATE ships with Marco, which is Metacity based but can't do what I need. It also ships with Compiz, but last time I tried to switch to that it broke X and I was stuck in tty1 unable to even edit config files to make it switch back to Marco.

Just tried it, I like how they're being Gnome3 while still being something that a Gnome2 user would be comfortable using.

The fact that they just straight up grabbed Gnome3 Nautilus kinda pissed me off though, I really abhor the new Nautilus.

debian stable isn't really recommended for desktops because of old packages. debian testing is fine.

>>
>>52095948
Hi Allan!
>>
>>52101823
it will require more configuration to get a decent-looking system with debian though.
for example, while xubuntu comes with a customized and themed xfce setup, debian with xfce only gives you a basic xfce setup to work with.
>>

>>52101818
Coming from a pretty average user, the main benefit of Linux is that it allows for a lot of customization. Obviously there's the desktop thread faggotry but also just how things behave, tiling WM's is a good example. Windows WM is something you just take for granted, "it's how it works", but in Linux you realize that in fact it can work in a lot of different ways.

Honestly, if you just want to install it and have it "just werk" it can do that too. But in that case it just isn't all that different. Going from Windows to Linux Mint will have you spend 5s to see what's different about the start menu and then it's the same shit
>>
>>52101898
Yeah no worries there. I'm more worried about how different you can make it look than how difficult or tedious it is to do so. I see that desktop threads are mostly populated by the same kind of tiling window manager stuff that I really don't find that appealing, but I can see how "customizable" it is despite it being a chore. On the other hand, I have used ubuntu a long time ago and even with the tweak tool unity was pretty limited.
>>
>>52101863
I thought so too when I was starting out, that was months ago. Can I say I've fully embraced Vim since then? No.
I still use arrow keys, I still use PgUp/PgDown/Home/End keys, I don't make much use of all the tricks that Vim offers. But I can feel the itch to stop and do things the Vim way. The last thing I adopted was "c" key -- basically "delete and enter insert mode". A minor thing, but combine it with "t" and you've got a real nice timesaver.
I can see myself fully transitioning to hjkl and fancy combos in a year or two. It's a slow process, but persistence is key. If you don't find the Vim way yourself, the Vim way will find you, eventually.

It's coded by competent people, a lot of things that really bothered me on windows works infinitely better on linux. Also as you may have heard when it comes to performance and stability, linux is still unbeaten

I'm kind of confused on how Linux software development and distribution works coming from Windows. Will a program "just werk" on all Linux distros, or do you have to deal with a lot of distro-specific code? And what's the best way of releasing your application? I'd imagine that most repos are kind of selective, can you just distribute your applications like you would an exe file for Windows?
