In *nix circles it has everything or just as much to do with software licensing. Obviously with things like musl and clang it would have BSD license software which is GPL compatible despite the shitflinging from both camps. Anyway, just look into it yourself, google/startpage. Let's say you have a specific need in your company and you need a complex program that will fit that need.
You hire a bunch of developers to develop it. You pay them for working on it. The program is released openly and fixes your problem. There's no difference if somebody else has the tech since you just needed it for the company's needs.

its not dead because i am using free software and so are millions of people everyday. recent shenanigans of OSX and Windows have increased curiosity in Linux and Ubuntu has done a fine job of being a stable desktop OS.
