How dangerous is it to run my 980ti at 80c? I can get better temps with a custom fan profile but it's so loud

iirc 980ti is rated supposed to throttle at ~85c to protect itself. So running at 80 may hurt the longevity of the card, but shouldn't do any damage.

>>
>>52077229
I dunno, running at 80c may prevent it from working five years from now. It may do nothing.

Can't you use MSI afterburner to have the fans run at the minimum speed?

currently I have 1 hdd in my r5, in the small hdd cage on the ground. im looking to add in 4-6 hdd in the next week, and I'm wondering how badly this will affect the airflow in my case. directed airflow isn't as important for my components, but I do need cool air to get to the other components. Is this going to be a problem for me? I'll have to add in the other hdd cage if that changes anything

I made a NAS out with the help of samba using a raspberry pi.

I am able to see the folder on other computers on my home network and on my pi but whenever I try to put files into the folder I get denied.

I'm assuming that I just need to give whatever user logs in superuser permissions. How would I do that?

(test.txt is in the folder by me using sudo in the terminal)
>>
>>52077348
HDDs will block a fair bit of air from getting in. So, you have two options:
1. Move/add another fan to the front of the case or one to the bottom of the case.
2. Try static pressure fans. These may or may not work.

i have gentle typhoons in the front so i cant really get much better SP fans. I worry about moving a fan to the bottom, wont that end up causing turbulence and causing more harm than good? the gpu is almost a non issue, its a 295x2 exausting out the top in push pull, the cpu is a dual tower heatsink though, so the internal temp matters a bit more

Apple fans are not delirious?
>>
>>52077490
It shouldn't be a problem. If you do decide to move it to the bottom, you could always set the speed to low.

The best thing to do would be to see what the situation is like with all the drives installed and then to go from there.

Is there anyway to combine a VPN with Tor? The one I'm thinking of buying doesn't seem the safest but it has a lot of IPs, which is my main concern. I was wondering if you could make it so that the IP displayed by the VPN is what appears to the internet, but anyone backtracking it would still have to go through the Tor network. Pic related is what I had in mind.

I have two hardrives. One is Linux and the other is Win 8.1
I'm trying to put Mint in my other harddrive. Installation is great but then suddenly midway I get
"Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda. This is a fatal error"
What do?
>>
>>52078082
two hard drives makes it complicated even for Windows install. I suggest you create a partition within the 8.1 drive and install alongside Windows for dual boot. Save you lot of trouble.
>>
>>52077977
Yes. 390 is a pretty good card, and superior to the 970 in most cases.

>>52078034
>$500 card shits on a $330 card.
Well shit, call the presses.
>>
>>52078082
I think it might involve the MBR. I don't know if 8.1 uses it, but Windows usually uses a master boot record as a way of booting up OS's. If you install GRUB through Windows, you're gonna have a bad time. I think EasyBCD could help uninstall GRUB from your MBR, but I've never had to do this before, I'm just letting you know that. Using GRUB when Linux is installed first is much easier, because then you can install Windows on a separate partition and they won't conflict.

I went and got Baka-MPlayer, and I'd like to ask if I'm understanding this correctly:

https://github.com/u8sand/Baka-MPlayer/blob/master/DOCS/settings.md

I can find the file that this is talking about and the mpv section within it. Does this mean I can just copy and paste any mpv.conf files into this and be fine?

Why don't you get closed heaphones or in-ear earphones instead?

>>
>>52078694
not quite

that config file is evidently baka-mplayer-specific
for one, it's in JSON format, not mpv's ini-like format

i do see an mpv section;
"mpv": { # mpv specific options
...
},

though you will need to reformat them to suit
for example, it has;
"msg-level": s,

which in the mpv config file, is written as;
msg-level=s

Does Freesync make the image look any smoother or somehow better than Vsync, or is it just a way to remove screen tearing with less input lag?
>>
>>52078742
the idea is to push frames "as they're ready", rather than being forced into a constant rate

for example, if your game is doing 55fps, and your monitor 60Hz, the result won't be perfectly smooth, since you can't evenly space 55 frames over 60
where with freesync the monitor would simply run at 55Hz to match the game

so it's like the advantage of vsyncs' complete frames (no tearing), without the disadvantage of having to wait for the monitors' next refresh period (less latency)

this is from what i understand, i haven't looked into it all that much

So, my friend is basically junking his semi-old alienware pc, and although my current set up is a lot better, I was considering taking his liquid cooling setup (especially the gpu cooling parts) for peanuts. Would I be able to take it out of his large alienware case and install it into my mid-size NXT case on my r9 280X? How do email confirmations work simply?

You click a link from inside your email and it takes you somewhere else.

When I visit the facebook page of for instance "Netflix", all the content is in German, even though I've changed all my language preferences to English.
I guess this is because my IP is German or something like that. I am German, but I'm really an anglophile and 99% of the sites I visit are in English, so I don't really want that shit to be in German.

Is there any way to change this? It's not even a "Netflix Germany" or something, it's just the regular Netflix Facebook page. Pls help.
>>
>>52079784
Yeah, it's like two-factor identification. Sure, someone could be in ownership of your phone, know its password, and also have access to your account password, but the point of having all of those road blocks is that you only need one in your way to prevent you from getting in.

Confirming your email requires that you inform the service that this email belongs to you, that you actually do in fact own that email address, and that you have the capacity to click the very specific link to activate your account. If you're asking because you're worried, don't be.

How does free W10 upgrade work?

I have a pirated W10 install on my T420 on an SSD.

If I take out the SSD, put in an old HDD and use the license sticker to install a legit copy of W7 to have Microsoft generate a hash (?) for my laptop, then put back the SSD with W10, will it have my ass covered? Or is a change in storage enough to have a different hash?

There once was an encryption tool prefixed with 'true'
And since that's been through...
A successor named 'veracrypt', appeared out of the blue
One tool someone might consider to pursue

However, based on the 'true', was one with a different seal
Packaged and maintained for Linux, prefixed with 'real'
Nothing was known about the 'real' tool
Other than it being dependent on
The maintenance of the 'true' one, now gone

Tell me, then, those with wisdom on such a thing
To what do we owe its updates? Please sing
Is it now based on 'vera', or simply on its own?
Can it be trusted, or should one leave it alone?

Making a gmail account redirected you to make a google+ profile but you could just close the window at that point so it wasn't actually required, just that it didn't directly lead you to your email after account creation.

It's also optional now if I'm not mistaken since it lets you pick to go straight to gmail instead of "forcing" you to make a google+ profile.

So I'm playing music in my car and it goes into the stereo via USB. Let's say I wanted to run that cable into another circuit and into my stereo at the same time.

I get two USB female slots and solder them to some perfboard and just cross the data and VCC lines from one to the other. Now for the music waveforms I want to extract and feed into another circuit what do I do?

With AUX this is easy, L R GND done. But USB is DATA+ and DATA-? Is that like L and R? How do I get the music off the USB data channels? Do I have to demux it or something?

USB doesn't carry the analog sound. It carries digital information only.

USB carries the file (MP3 or WAV or whatever) and it is entirely up to the receiving end to decode the file into audio.

So no, it doesn't work the way you think it does.

I wanted to build an LED VU meter for my car. The audio signal needs to go into the VU meter circuit and into the stereo. I can use AUX for this but I lose all the extra functionality for the stereo that is only available with USB. So no song title display, no changing tracks or pausing via the stereo, etc. Not a massive inconvenience but an inconvenience nonetheless.

I can plug USB in and AUX and still control the ipod over USB but naturally no audio plays. There's no way I can play a song over USB and still transmit the analog signal over AUX.

These threads are always helpful when I need advice or suggestions so here's another.

I recently installed 2 more case fans in my Phantom 530 case, and did a complete rebuild to make sure everything was dust free, cleaned, etc.
Along with that I cleaned off the old thermal paste (the one that came already applied on the corsair H100i) and reapplied fresh paste just to give me that little extra squeeze in temps. Upon booting up, I noticed that my temps were nice and low where I'd expect them, however during a game of pretty much anything, they start ramping up into the 60s (normal), however after a few hours I noticed all of my max values were in the high 90s and 100.

So my question is, could I have applied too much (I definitely didn't put too little) thermal paste which caused these higher temps? Keep in mind, before putting on fresh paste I would never hit 100 and almost never 90s. It would Max out around 85.

I'm thinking I should clean it and reapply it using a different method (I used the "pea sized" method where you use the pressure from the cooling system to give it spread), however I'm wonder what you /g/uys think. What would you do/recommend?

CPU is i7-4790k

I'm not 100% sure about the extensions, I'd imagine most/all allow you to do that in some fashion.

Personally I use chrome and it's fine for me. I got incognito mode like the true hacker I am so FBI can't trace me.

Seriously though, I think a question like this will get a lot of shit flinging about which is best and that ones bad or w/e. Id say just pick whatever you want and try it. If you don't like it do something else. I used to use Firefox but then it kept crashing for w/e reason so I switched to chrome. And I definitely hate IE/edge or whatever the equivalent is to internet explorer. That things terrible in my opinion.

Just try one and see what you think. Like I said, Not 100% about the extensions

>>
>>52083369
No. Apple doesn't yet have a model of selling user data so any telemetry is actually disable-able.
>>
>>52083313
You applied the paste correctly, however it should be less than a real pea size, and it might have gotten fucked while spreading from the pressure.

Try again and make sure there is equal pressure from all sides when securing in place the cooler.

This is an issue that's been around for years and I googled and found other forums all over the place from Imagine-line, Ableton, to reason etc.

If you've ever used any DAWs then you've prolly at some point used or wanted to make Orchestra music and play with it. So there's Edirol which has a very nice orchestral kit. However here's the problem, every time you save your work and come back, it resets the VSTi/plugin. It resets it back to flutes. All of them. No matter how many you may have opened, they al reset.

Well, the files to this are DLLs and I know those are easy enough by most people who have this kind of knowledge can edit these files, but I would have no idea where to begin on editing the file. Would any one have a solution to this? I can more than likely upload the DLL here and let whoever look into it. Any help?

I've had this idea for a while to get a NAS, and I need it only for storage/backups, no streaming. When my computer requests to read a file from it, to watch a video I put on it for example, it doesn't need to transcode right? I always read about people building a nas with a good cpu to stream their own things to other devices, so I thought it was only needed in that case. If I just want to watch it from my pc the nas doesn't need to transcode it, right?
>>
>>52084147
you mean controller? do you mean you're playing your xbox or are you on PC cause you're sounding like you want to do 2 things at once with out the computer to stop focus. the only way you can do this is if you dual boot your PC with both OS' running at the same time and that's already a lot of work. No you initially cannot do this.

And the only "game pad" there is is the wii u game pad. That is a controller. I had to google that to understand what you're talking about

My mom wants a desktop that supports two monitors, and can browse the Ancestry website without slowdown.

Which build on logicalincrements would best suit this? Destitute or minimum?

buy her a mac, she'll be happy. trust me, you're mom is dumb when it comes to computers and in a week after the build here is your following green text:

>build mom amazing batman computer
>mom uses it to get on facebook and other facebook games
>mom has no idea she has a 1TB hdd in her computer
>made mom a steam acc
>never uses it
>says it's "Too complicated" to use it
>explain step by step how to use it
>mom bugs me over and over to make her a computer
>did it to shut her up.
Buy her a mac, done. She wont care. it's a 1200$ facebook machine to her that she will clutterup with cat pics and pics of you and others and ask you to constantly help you with,

>>52085101

Quick question /g/

I got a old 1,86ghz core2dou that i want to vuild into a NAS for someone
i already have a couple of harddrives, the thing currently runs windows XP and has 1GB of ram (although i could upgrade it to more, max 4 gb)

>tl;dr
How does one simply make a NAS out of an Desktop

I wannt the easy way, i've googled Freenas and shit
Suppose i could put win7 on it and mess around with shared folders and tell my torrentclient to save on a network path
>>
I'm new to linux, so this is probably something very obvious

This application that I use has inbuilt ads, and I'd like to disable them. I've googled already, but could only come up with blocking site's IP, which makes the application unusable. How could I block a specific address to an image, while letting every other traffic from that IP come through?

Using debian wheezy

What happens if you hook up a speaker system to an amp but leave out one wire, for example the left channel minus? Do you just get distorted signal or does the system just not work at all?

I heard a rumor about some new computer hardware technology that one of the big chip manufacturers is coming out with this summer I think's ATI vs Nvidia. It was supposed to make or break some company that's losing money already which was going to lower the price of gaming machines this summer.
Is this true?
If so, where can I read up more information about it?
>>
Looking for my first NAS, not sure what to get out of these two

I'm just going to store films and ISOs on it for now, but want to mainly use it as a backup system
