Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

No news.

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

What I'm saying is that I just want to be pretty, and, well, unfortunately guys can't really be pretty. If you think I'm a faggot for that, then that's ok.

>>52077173
I actually bought the non-tablet version; I've had an X60T in the past and I'd rather not have the hinge go flaccid on me like the X60T did. Besides I just checked. The IPS versions of the display are only like $50 on ebay, so if I ever want to upgrade it's cheap to do so (though I probably won't get it).
>>
>>52077207
If you're willing to go through the annoyance of getting and installing the new screen, then it's probably worth to do that, then. I just recommended the X220T because I'm hella lazy and didn't realise that there are problems that people have with the hinges on them.

Oh great electronic demon master,
grant me the power of the 4 elements,

The fire of the HD+ panel,
The water of the tears of the apple users,
The ominous winds anticipating the ebay deals,
The fertile earth that spawned my human body which is your host tonight.

>proceed to step into the circle now, a badly drawn clitmouse means danger

[Insert your name here] is your vessel this night, oh powerful master of business.
Great thinker and merciful granter of gifts,
Here, at 4:20 AM I ask thou to protect me from scams, from the locked BIOS curse, from the venomous apple's retina displays.

I understand, oh merciful being, that your spirit will become the rollcage of my will.
Through the so apparent low quality TN display, you will grant me powers. The power to think beyond the human realm.

>Now you ask for the thinkpad that you wish to be gifted with.

>Dropping the A series, IBM introduced a mainstream budget line of ThinkPads in the R series. The RXXe series lacks some of "normal" RXX series features like stereo speakers, touchpad, hot-swappable CD/DVD drive, docking connector and some other things. They also usually feature slower CPU like Intel Celeron (but in newer models also slower Intel Core processors). ACPI functions in modern RXX-e models are just as well supported in Linux as they are for the regular RXX models. Starting from R61, the R series ThinkPads feature the same chassis (including RollCage) as the T series making them virtually indistinguishable from each other.

Anyways I guess the verdict remains in stone as always... X,T,W or bust. Only Carbon is the exception and maybe the new P50 and P70 even though they look cheap.

>T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Except that IBM didn't design any of these series, did they?
So they can't be "real" ThinkPads, just rebadged commodity Lenovos.
IBM handing responsibility for the design to Lenovo was a big mistake. The frst thing Lenovo did was to refactor the ThinkPad while keeping the outer appearance. Everything that made the ThinkPad a business machine was replaced by commodity components. The FlexView display was the first to go. Then the error-checking, the redundancy, the hi-tolerance components; anything to get the cost down.
>>
Is the X1 Carbon worth it?

The 2014 versions with the fucked up keyboard are going for around 600€, which seems like an OK price, but I am not sure if I can deal with that keyboard. Plus, the "adaptive" part seems like a nightmare to get working with linux.

There are manuals on the web on how to swap the touchpad with the new one, but it seems you cant swap the keyboard.

And the 2015 model is starting at 1000€, which is a bit much, maybe?

When will the 2016 model come out, and can I expect a price drop?

I've been having some really annoying issues with the touchpad on my T430. After I use 2-finger scrolling, sometimes the mouse will freeze for a few seconds so you can't move it around with the touchpad. It will also tend to be bouncy and jerky when I'm trying to scroll, which makes it difficult to use. Is this indicative of needing to replace the touchpad altogether?

T and X series were handed over, and the W series was created to follow after the 15.1" T60p/T61p at which lelnovo had taken over the Thinkpad line.

You're right about the streamlining of features though, that's why anything after the *20 series are met with disdain and people who ordered anything new from lelnovo are laughed at.

Not recommended, you won't get better batteries that the OEM ones.

Best bet is to rebuild them yourself. Buy good quality (don't skip this) high capacity (not fake capacity that offer chink cells) batteries and put them in the old battery case. All of them have to 18650 cells have to have the same capacity, voltage remains the same in the 18650 li-ion.

It is indeed, not only happens to thinkpads. My Dell had the exactly same behaviour.

How long does the battery of a typical t420 running Linux last?
I just fucked the charger on my t60 so i may as well upgrade to a better model.
Also, what models will give me longer life with similar specs to the t420? it must have a touch pad so fuck off with X series shit.
>>
>>52083296
X series onward the x201 I believe have a touchpad, my lord.

X series will give you longer battery runtime, sire, since the screen is smaller and the backlight is one of the most energy demanding elements.

May I suggest sir a t430 or newer? More energy efficient, capacity for a 9-cell battery plus built in 3-cell battery for amazing battery life.
>>

>>
>>52083414
hm i can actually afford this, will definitely consider this too.
So between an x220 and a t420, which would you get? i don't really care about weight that much, i do care about performance, i also care about graphics and modern OpenGL support enough to play chinese cartoons in mpv, but battery is also important, possibly more important than the others.
I think I'm leaning towards x220 now, will it fulfil those things?
>>
>>52083218
Thanks man. Wouldn't have guessed laptop batteries to be made of these aa-shaped battery cells.
>>
>>52083467

Yeah sure, my sandy bridge i5 dell could do all that.

Beware however that the X220 while having a small screen, it also has lower resolution. 1366x768. It can also be IPS for better viewing angles and colors. The IPS panel is guaranteed in the tablet version,

The T420 has a 1600x900 panel as the highest end option.TN only.
>>
>>52083524

I'm still trying to figure out if AA batteries are the 1865 required by laptop batteries, could very well be. Size is important since they all have to fit in the case.

Requires soldering skills of course, not a big deal.
>>
>>52083550
nope, AA are 1.5V per cell (1.2V per cell if rechargable (Ni-Cd or NiMH)), 18650 are Li-ion 3.7V per cell

That sucks, that means it will fucking hard to find them around here.

There's a fucking import tax for batteries, $20 for each item. It ends up cheaper to order a new battery from lenovo.

for nothing, it's been sitting in its case for months now

128GB SSD

TigerP

It's a T60p, I've named all of my computers after tanks

>What Thinkpad do you have and why that model?
X200 Tablet, it was cheap and I like the digitizer
>Which OS(s) do you use and why?
Windows 10 for now, because I'm too lazy to pick a Linux distro
>What do you use it for?
Everything, programming, pornz, light gaming
>Do you use a HDD or a SSD and why? What capacity and why?
HDD, 160GB, came with the laptop, not upgraded yet

>>What Thinkpad do you have and why that model?
W530 because i didnt know any better.
>>Which OS(s) do you use and why?
A collection of GNU/loonix, work related and in private. Oh and Win7 for CAD, also work.
>>What do you use it for?
Office work, CAD, interwebs, movies
>>Do you use a HDD or a SSD and why? What capacity and why?
Yes. 250 ssd in main because it's fast, 500 hdd in ultrabay for data storage.
>>How much RAM do you have?
Sweet16

I wanna get myself a T420(s) because the W530 is total overkill and also too much of a pain to carry around. I also hate nvidia optimus, cannot use miniDisplayPort unless switching to discrete graphics in bios (in w530, the miniDP is hardwired to the discrete graphics). I rarely need discrete graphics though.

Do you guys know if the T420 / T420s has the same problem? Or can i into miniDP without switching on the power hungry discrete graphics? Couldn't find reliable information so maybe someone can tell from experience.

The inly x220s I found have Hdd and ram missing, I think I'd rather just get the x201, it's good enough for what I need it for

Whatever the model is.

>What Thinkpad do you have and why that model?
Thinkpad x301, it's the most premium thinkpad I've ever used. The rubberized keyboard is so pleasant to type on and the weight is perfect. I just wish the battery life was longer.
>Which OS(s) do you use and why?
I just run linux on it since I prefer a NIX environment for development.
>What do you use it for?
School, programming, surfing, and other normal stuff I guess? It's a laptop.
>Do you use a HDD or a SSD and why? What capacity and why?
Came with a 64gb ssd, it's large enough for my needs and it helps keep my laptop running smooth since the processor is so slow.
>Do you use your M-SATA slot? If so, what capacity and why?
Don't have one
>How much RAM do you have?
4gb

Convince me not to sell my desktop and use my thinkpad exclusively.
Will I regret it? It's a T430.
On my desktop I usually just browse the internet, play videos and music. No games.

I was thinking about keeping a widescreen monitor to enjoy the displayport.

>>52086612
Been debating it but I have too many hard drives in my desktop for all my shit. Maybe if I had an ssd and hdd it could work.

You probably won't regret it, then. Especially not if you get a dock for your T430 to have a permanent setup at your desk that you can just plug it into.

Hard drives might be a concern, but for that you can always get a NAS.

rate the x1 carbon /10

10 being the dankest

Any reason not to install Arch on my x230T? I heard that it's hard to get the touch screen running
>>
>>52086641
>>52086716
Don't think I can afford a proper NAS even after selling the tower but good point, hard drives will be an issue.
>>
>>52086888
Im planing on trying for a w series with a dock and nas drive, but thats still a good chunk to retire my desktop.
>>
>>52080973
I prefer to buy cheaper without the HD then install a cheap SSD. Hard drives on old notebooks are slow as old folks fucking.
>>
>>52081300
It will run Xubuntu fine. I have it on a weaker spec X200.
>>
>>52085806

I wish it worked out beyter for you. The x220 will last a bit longer than the x201. Most people already have an hdd or ssd laying around and can swap in their old ram.
