1) Many men choose careers based upon what those careers say about them as well. But nerd stuff is seen as traditionally male, so they don't have second thoughts about diving into it.
2) Most girls in Engineering school and Medical school that I have known were actually very competitive and represented the gender pretty well on the top of the class. I would say the same about my fellow researchers. The thing is, in my current lab and in the Engineering school, there women were barely 10% of the total people. However, according to the numbers I've seen, Biology, Civil Engineering and Architecture are much more popular with women. In Medical school, they are more 50% (keep in mind that this is not in the USA). This means that many "smart" women are literally avoiding computer science & engineering.
3) The way education works, most people decide on their career when they are still teenagers. They are going to decide like teenagers. In addition, that "working with a compiler" argument doesn't really work, because almost no one really knows how it will be like at the time they are making their college application.

Can confirm, I took both in BS Biology and BS Architecture. Lots of qt3.14 females 2bh in both courses. Civil Engineering with the least females among the 3 stated. Though after graduating, I worked at an IT company with female programmers that graduated with BS Bio and BS Civil Enggring courses. But those who write the history books write the history and in modern society women have always been second placed and side lined historically. It just happens to be a fact that few women have been celebrated for their scientific, mathematical, or engineering prowess.

I say this because as a guy i have seen it first hand and as a guy who likes working with dedicated women in science more than men working in science I have to say working with women to me is just easier.

In my experience the girls in my cs courses are pretty competent (there are few), and some were just as dumb as the paki guys.
As far as capability goes, obviously gender can't define that. Either you can or you cant.

If you know one OO Langugage you can learn them all in a relativly small amount of time. I think C# is a nice language to start in because you probably use windows and you have the gui editor which makes your life a lot easier in the starting days. Most of the programs you will write are gui based when you start out. Just make sure you learn another language when you feel comfy in C#. Don't stick with what you know, keep on learning.
