Listen up guys, this thread is for the devices that you buy once and then realise 5 years later you're using them every day.

It's those devices that require no micromanaging and perform their duties with perfection.

>(a.k.a. the antithesis to linux, but we disgress...)

May I present to you: Casio GPW-1000.

1) Built like a tank, literally undestroyable (by brute force, water, electric static, ...)

2) No need to change the battery. I mean, c'mon, it's 2015! It has solar charging.

3) No need to set the time, anywhere in the world. GPS finds your location and sets the local time with atomic precision. Remember, this is not a one-day-battery-life Garmin or Suunto –it's still powered by solar energy only.

For these three reasons, not only will you never have any issues with the watch, but it will also last a life time because there is literally no reason IMAGINABLE to upgrade –you can wear it in any conditions, without external needs, and it will display atomic time; you cannot imagine a reason to upgrade something that has reached perfection –a watch showing the exact time, forever.
>>
>>52074881
I got a really nice g-shock solar waveceptor for very cheap a few years back, still wear it every day.

Great watches, but the ones with digital displays look cheap, unless you opt for one with a stainless steel band.

Haha no, Tissot is where Swatch pedals its dogshit just to try and lure suckers in with the "Swiss Made"

that's the case with all g-shocks, but that doesn't mean the strap is still strong in absolute terms.

i just really would like a watch that is completely no-maintenance, and setting your watch because you're outside of the very tiny radio radius *is* maintenance.

I want to build my own digital watch. Is this possible? Anyone else here done this?

Sure. Depends on what you mean by build. You can recase a movement and screen. You can build a circuit but then it probably won't be wearable other than as a novelty - I think there are kits for that.

I have a few vintage Omegas (Got my mum a 1966 Ladies Seamaster Cosmic), a doppelcock GQ, a few meme watches (Tisell, etc) as well as a bunch of other watches I bought without influence from /wtg/.

I'm only about 50% memed so far.

I never said the amphibia was accurate, now did I? It's russian watch, made from old soup cans by some crooked and perpentually drunk kirgisian using soviet equipment. Still probably lasts longer than your skagen, while being unaccurate soviet tank of an watch.

>2) No need to change the battery. I mean, c'mon, it's 2015! It has solar charging.

Solar is fine for a watch like this, but it's stupid on a dress watch (and I see far too many dress quartz watches with solar). A dress watch lives under the cuff most of the day, and yet in the instructions it specifically says to keep the watch out from under the cuff in order to charge.

>>52075425
The dial finish looks pretty rough to me. As for the movement, I would want to wait several years to learn about the longevity and durability, not to mention how much it costs to service. It could be a disposable movement.

One thing I really don't like about them is the lowered beat rate (21600 vs 28000) on what is essentially a modified ETA 2824-2. I don't like how it has several thinner parts as well. The increased power reserve isn't worth it to me.
The ETA 2824-2 is a reliable and rugged movement, and can be easily maintained. The only real fault (handwinding) can be addressed by proper lubrication and just using the efficient auto winder most of the time.

>>52086458
I don't think solar is an issue on a dress watch, unless you put it in a dark drawer it should get plenty of light to keep it charged when it's sitting on your dresser between wearings. I don't have much occasion to wear a dress watch, but my solar watches certainly stay charged fine during the winter when they're covered by my jacket sleeve most of the time.

>>52086511

>>52083963
Design-wise, Skagens are pretty good. If only the build quality matched the design. If you read reviews or go to Watchuseek, you'll see a common complaint of the watch just not standing up to day-to-day wear. On Amazon, there are complaints about the crystals cracking. A light whack and the case comes apart.

Skagen could be a winner if they just changed a few things:
1. Make a sapphire crystal to reduce scratches
2. Improve quality control
3. Improve case design for greater water resistance and shock resistance.

Do that, put a good Seiko movement (like the tough 7N43) in the case, and you'd have a nice looking watch that would last as long as you'd need it.
>>
>>52086509

>>52086512
I wear a dress watch under the cuff, then I take it off at night when I go to sleep. The only real time it could charge would be on the week-ends.

Maybe it would work, but for my use pattern, an automatic works better. If I wanted a rechargeable quartz, I think a direct drive Seiko Kinetic (which allows hand-winding) would work better for me. I'd probably stick with a regular quartz, however, as I change my own batteries.

I usually take mine off as soon as I get home, so the few hours of artificial light they get seem to be enough, and I also tend to leave them on my dresser, which gets a decent amount of natural light from the window in the morning before I put the watch on.

I like autos as well though, an SKX is my everyday watch, but I've been through periods where I was wearing a solar one regularly, and I just got another one for Christmas so I'll be wearing that a decent amount.

I've had it for just a few days, and it's been good for the money. The case is very well constructed, the bracelet is very comfortable and we'll made.

The movement is where the corner gets cut, but it's a miyota 8215, and a decent enough movement, especially compared to a 7S26 which is my only other watch.

Yeah, it's made by Surefire, who are a really highly-regarded company that makes flashlights for military, police, and civilians who value a bright, rugged flashlight.

The idea behind this thing was apparently that it'd be aimed at the target when holding a pistol with two hands, but why wear a ridiculous clunky "watch" when you could just attach a light to the pistol instead?

I think they might be yes. I got a 1980 gold Seiko 5 (my birth year) for around £8 because the band was badly worn with a lot of plating missing.

I slapped a tan crocodile leather bracelet on it and it looks fantastic, keeps perfect time too.

Unless they are from India, and or have been given the Philippines special treatment.

Then yes, otherwise vintage soviet watches are even bigger bargains.

Constellations have a star on the dial and say Constellation and chronometer on the dial, plus they have the observatory logo on the caseback. I think Seamasters also always say Seamaster on the dial. It's probably a Geneve like >>52089139 said but there's really no way to know what year or anything without removing the caseback to check the reference number.
>>
>>52089175
I thought you had a really fat forearm and way too tight of a band until I realized I was looking at a right arm.

How do you stand having your watch way down at your wrist joint? I wear mine so that the top of my hand barely touches the crown if I bend it all the way back.

Take a knife an pop the back case its that easy.Lest us see it
>>
>>52089280
It's not really that low, it rests just above my wrist joint so that it's basically resting on the end of my forearm bone. I guess it just feels comfiest there, do you have a pic of where you wear yours?

If I bend my hand back all the way it only just touches the case, plus that's a pretty small case anyway at around 35mm.
>>
>>52089378
Maybe it's just the pic then, mine sounds about the same as yours. My strap rests on the end of the forearm bone too.
>>

They made a Char one as well, but I've never been able to find one for sale anywhere. It has a full-red face and isn't as low-key as the Feddie one anyway, though.

Hey there anon, how much of your 7002 is original?
>>
>>52092825
It's a Gundam special edition from 2006 or so, made by Citizen and only sold in Japan in relatively limited numbers. (I don't know the exact number, but mine is only S/N 295.) They also made a red-faced Char model and a green-faced generic Zeon one, but I've never seen them for sale.

I found it on eBay way back in '08 for around $300, felt reasonably confident it was real since it was a Japanese seller, and snapped it up. I've never seen another one on the international market.

My only complaint is that being an older watch and Japanese-market, it wears pretty small, the case is about SKX-sized but the bezel and face are smaller than a Weekender, and it takes a 20mm strap.

I've been meaning to find an appropriately Gundam-colored but tasteful NATO to wear it with.
