I have a gtx 660oc/fx-6300. Is replacing my gpu with an r9 380 enough to run new games on high settings.

R9 380 is about $200~ new, for any version really. Best price to performance, but if you're buying used then you can find R9 290's for about $200, give or take $100, on eBay. Though, be wary. A lot of high end AMD cards were OC'd to all fuck and used for mining, which would shorten the life like crazy. You also wouldn't have a warranty and when anything can happen, even a power surge fucking your shit up, I'd advise a 380 new. I have one, I can run most new AAA games at high-ultra 1080p @ 60FPS. Worth the $180 I paid for it.
i been thinking of just getting a 380 and saying fuck you to both amd/intel, i only plan to game at 1080p

I paid 178 for a 380. if You can't find r9 280x,285 or used 290/x for 200~ (watch out for reference cards, they tend to get pretty hot) a 7970 is a rebranded 280x btw. then I suggest you getting a 380. the 380x isn't worth 50 extra dollars for 5% gains.

1) Intel can push micrcode through windoiws update, so I don't see this lasting despite the internal decoupling of components that allows this.
2) L3 chache is important to Intel chips and i3's have considerably less than i5's and (obviously) i7's.
