Wow that's way more simple than I imagined. Kinda makes it cooler.
I have a feeling this is a dumb question, but so the 214 oscillates at 365 times a second and produces a completely smooth sweep. Yet, the video said a quartz crystal oscillates at over 32,000/sec.
Why the sweep for the 214 and why the 1tick/sec for quartz?

Regular quartz tick once a second to conserve power. Accutrons burn through batteries much faster and I've heard about drift issues, too.

Several years ago, Seiko was working on a quartz movement that beat at a fairly high rate (similar to a mechanical) but didn't drain the battery excessively. I can't find the link/too lazy to look, but from what I recall they shelved it, as the market was moving towards autos at the mid-high end.
>>
Is there a kinetic or solar quartz with a high beat rate?

Posted this question in last thread and got some good ideas

What to get next?

I'm thinking I want a diver, a chronograph, and a proper dress watch. Maybe a fleiger for fun but I don't like big watches.

I'm a poorfag, most chronos turn me off but >>52073120 looks pretty sweet, and it's within my price range. As I've said before, I'm a poorfag.
>>
>>52075636
I think you should look at a proper dress watch next. After that the diver and chrono.
>>
>>52074415
>>52074481
Ok, got it. Thanks for the info.

It's crazy that the 214s are still in working order. With those hair thin coils and all the wear, pushing every vibration Jesus, you'd think they'd crap out.

I know at least two anons have them, if you're in here tonight, recommend?
>>
>>52075671
Any suggestions? I am a sucker for "dressy" watches, dressed up sport watches. I want the seiko alpinist, I think it's like SARG035 or something.
>>
>>52075741
SARB017
>>
My grand parents offered to get me a watch for graduating uni. I know nothing about them except that the black/chrome ones with a lot of hands and shit look cool. Any recommendations?
>>
>>52075741
The Alpinist is a nice watch, but it's not really a dressy watch. Something like a SARB033 is closer to a dressed up sports watch.

But my suggestion is get a true dress watch. You can get a sporty/dressy watch later- get full representations of each individual type first. The Seiko Dolce quartz is great, as it's a (fairly) affordable high-accuracy quartz watch:

http://www.seiyajapan.com/collections/seiko/products/seiko-dolce-quartz-sacm171

It's small and slim and restrained like a dress watch should be. It has an interesting feature (high accuracy). That's a good combination.
>>
>>52075636
How often do you find yourself in a situation thst requires wearing a proper dress watch? An alpinist wouldn't be suitable for a job interview or another very formal event. An orient bambino is a good choice, I don't know what your budget is but a bambino is only like $120. In house movement made in Japan

>>52075689
One thing to keep in mind is the old 214s are somewhat susceptible to positional variance. At least mine and watchmakeranon's are. If you just want a tuning fork watch, the omega f300s are much less affected by it. The omega tuning fork movements were developed by the same man who did the accutron 214 too.

If you want a spaceview though, go for it.
>>
>>52075792
Give a price range and decide if you want Quartz or mechanical and what designs you might like (use google for designs and if you don't know what Quartz and mechanical is)
>>
>>52075847
Not often. A more versatile watch appeals to me, but I do like the bambino and duke from orient. I was looking at the mako/ray series as well.

I also have a SNE393, which I have grown less fond of, not because it's quartz, but because of the bezel design, something about it seems unappealing. But that's sort of pseudo-dress as well
>>
Would a rodina/tisell bauhaus look too large on 6.5 inch skelly wrists?
>>
>>52075883
quartz is fine. I didn't get a price range but I'd want to keep it under $300-$400
>>
>>52076225
One option is to have a look at Seiko or Citizen chronographs, and pick the one you think looks most interesting to you at around that price. Just check the overall size of the watch. If you have a thin wrist, a large watch (44-48mm) will look strange.

>>
>>52076511
Getting the hirsch band was a good choice. It livens up even a cheap watch >>52074821 like I have. That Seiko is a decent quartz- the 7N43 has good shock resistance and reliability, the crystal is sapphire, WR 10 bar.

As I've fallen down the vintage Seiko rabbit hole lately, its been interesting to see the historical references being made by some of their current models.

The SDGMs actually bear a striking resemblance in their case design and proportions to the old Seikomatic watches, which were quite large for their era as well.

Note the pictured AUTOMATIC is not my own, its a picture I found online, don't blame me for the unscrewed crown.

That's real carbon fiber, has alright lume, very nice band, and decent case finishing.
>>
>>52077379
Torgoen is one of those "kinda sorta" Swiss watches where they do the bare minimum to call it Swiss Made. Some of them don't even rise to that level and they don't mark them Swiss Made on the dial.

They aren't badly finished, of course- I got one for my Dad because he needed a cheap GMT for a trip. But "Swiss Made" is stretching it.
>>
>>52077454
I completely agree of course. Case made in china and final assembly/movements done somewhere in a swiss sweatshop.
But it was a gift of course and I ain't arguing against that. I travel a lot hence they chose the 3 dialed one. Not my first choice.
>>

anyway archie isn't full-on serious in his vids, don't analyze him too much based on them. its humorous, maybe a lot of stuff is more or less true, but its kind of a caricature of himself, one could say.

and most of the "fighting" between watch enthusiast youtubers isn't very serious, more like joking around, dunno about this one in particular though.

>>
>>52079009
Meaning it'll change how many seconds per day it'll gain/lose depending on its position.

Pretty sure the 219 (single coil fork) is not affected by this. It is, however, affected by what surface it is rested on. IE, it may gain ~15 minutes a day if it is on a hard surface and be perfectly fine on another surface.
This could be fixed with a bit of adjustment. Can't be bothered though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvIeSQ-NOH0
>>
>>52079259
Yes, but I have on multiple occasions found my 219 watch to have skipped ahead minutes to even hours overnight. This is because it may be resonating with whatever surface it may be resting on and skipping teeth on the index wheel. Causing it to run twice as fast.

I suppose it could be the cause for your small inaccuracies but no way to be sure.

I can confirm this.

It's the surface, not the position.
Well, the position to a pretty slight degree when compared to surface.
Surface has a very noticeable difference. Not ~15min more like +/- 1min a day if left on that surface all day.

I think my ratchet pawls are just in fucky positions.
Also I oiled them. I later found out that they discourage this.
>>
>>52079353
Was about to suggest that it might be something to do with the ratcheting pawl. Mine came back from bob piker with it overtightened (nevermind the multiple other issues), so it'd gain several hours per day.

>twice as fast
It could be resonating with whatever it's resting on, but I've never seen anything that drastic with mine. To be fair I've had mine for less than a month.
What type of battery are you using? I think a more likely cause of the double indexing would be the 1.5v battery.

>>52079353
See above (if you're him?).

>>52079388
Both me.
I do all my own watch service.
I am aware that the voltage can cause issues, but in most cases this can be eliminated by a pawl adjustment.
I'm pretty sure I can solve my problems by tightening a pawl and/or removing the oil. Of course I can never find time to do this anyway.
>>
>>52079427
Before you try a the adjustment or removing the oil, I recommend trying out one of the Accucell-1s.
Mine was running fast originally with a 387S button cell. I didn't want to jump to an adjustment so I ordered an Accucell just to see if they actually did anything. 8 or so bucks. Dramatically helped. I've heard mixed reviews, some watches are more temperamental I guess, but for me it worked.
>>
>>52079496
Interesting, I never knew they were reproducing accutron batteries.
Thank's anon.
>>
>>52079533
Yeah, check eBay. There are a few sellers. I got mine from some dude who has been making them for years. nostalgia2000 or something is his user name. If you can't find it I'll post an actual link. 214s get an Accucell-1, but there's also a 2. He was good about my questions so I'm sure he'll help you out too.

iirc, it's a 387S with a diode attached to put out the correct 1.37v.
Sounded a little shadey, but like I said, I'm running smooth now. And he's got reviews to back him up

So the price hike on the bagels is a good thing then, and not just chink jewery?

My vote is white,
The gold on black seems gaudy but the gold on white feels clean.

Any of you guys have been to BaselWorld?

I plan to go with a friend and we are looking for a place to stay for those 7 days that wont cost an arm and a leg.

Pretty sure that's a tongji movement on the left.
Interesting history behind them, and they can actually run pretty damn well if the QC is good.
Only problem is that they were primarily designed to be manual-wind and the rotors that they put on don't do the best job of winding it up.
Pretty indestructible too.

>tfw my Amphibia gains ~60 seconds a day
A tiny nudge on the regulator is all it would take right?
>>
>>52082836
Maybe.

Feel free to experiment it, there is some timegrapher app that might help (Though you should pirate it unless you want to pay shekels).

Hard to say for sure.
In this WUS thread he has a bagel with the "Beijing" movement and it isn't finished quite as well.
