norton commander may be old, but the interface survived:
midnight commander for linux
for windows, if you want the command line version, you can use far manager (farmanagerDOTcom)

>The name itself is an intentional misnomer, as the button does not boost the speed; engaging it slows the system down to a state compatible with original 8088 chips.
>>
>>52069820
it actually SLOWS the CPU down to enable compatibility with programs made to run on the original IBM PC to avoid having in example games running like a VHS in fast forward.
>>
Life & why we all shouldn't end it
>>
Turbo button was official overclocking back in the early 90's. Pushing it makes a 8086 4 Mhz work at 8 Mhz. Some old MSDOS programs were just unusable at turbo speed.
>>
>>52069970
It kind of requires some thought gymnastics to realize that it means "in case of turbo speed, press this button", they really could have called it anything else.

it's like how photographers call photography of small things macro, even though the subject matter is micro-sized, in this case it's referencing the enlargement ratio and not subject size.
>>
>>52070096
>official overclocking
lolno. It always made the CPU slower or disabled the cache. It never was an overclock as the CPU was advertised at ti's turbo speed

what do I win? I get to see that all the time when I'm installing shit on my NT4 box
>>
>>52070096
It did the opposite; adding a shit ton of wait states or disabling the cache or whatever to make the system run at XT-tier speeds for old software that runs too fast on anything newer than a 4.7 MHz 8088
>>
>>52070154

Just give us a txt file or something, even if it's buried 25 folders deep in one of those mystery Windows subfolders. As long as it's there.
>>
>>52073887
Windows already has an integrated help application so it wouldn't be too much to ask to just add a list of error codes and at least a brief explanation with a link to a technical explanation.

It would amount to no work compared to making an OS, its just some extra text.

It's that shitty thing that was in the corner of full screen blue installer windows that

>>52068163
Sadly, I feel the need to explain this since I lightly scanned the thread and didn't see. CD Burners (especially early ones) had troubles writing accurately. So programs would do weird things to adjust settings. One of them was to attempt to slow down the rotational speed of the CD in hopes the system could recover. This rarely worked and 90% of people who lost a disk just ended up burning at the slowest speed possible.

So I think I remember this one:
>Progress
>CD-Rotation Speed
>Writable material in memory - If it dropped to zero then nothing to write and the disk is ruined. Of course if the disk is done then it is suppose to drop. So every 5 disks you forget how this works and panic for that half second when you see the 3rd bar dropping even though it is a success condition at the end.
>>
The current total install progress was already shown as a progress bar in the center of the screen, so the second column is not exactly total progress but total progress *from the currently inserted disk*. Back then switching diskettes or CDs was common, so this bar was useful to know when you should have the next diskette/CD ready.

Anon that pic really is from that old Windows installer. It has nothing to do with burning CDs.

It even looked like that when installing stuff from floppies.

iirc it's;
a. transfer progress for the current file
b. transfer progress for the current media (makes more sense when installing from sets of floppies/cd's, instead of a single one)
c. remaining target disk space
>>
>>52069820

Doesn't turbo let you scale down your processor speed to run older programs that used the CPU clock cycle speed for timing?

I remember when I was like six we had one of these, an LCD display on the front would toggle between 120 and 60 when you hit the button and the computer would get less responsive

I remember people calling PCs shit because they required you to tweak autoexec.bat on a per-game basis while Consoles just had you swap carts and play, but back then a PC started up in 2 seconds from power on to command prompt. Less than a second if you turned off memory testing. No modern PC comes as close.
>>
>>52088771
>Middle keeps your scroll wheel from doing anything

Scroll Lock made you scroll the screen instead of moving the cursor if enabled, but I think it was application dependant. It's like when you press ctrl+up/down in Notepad++.

Excel still uses scroll lock for sure, not sure what else does.

Pause... actually paused a lot of applications.
