Is the X1 worth it or should I get an M3? From what I've heard the X1 is fine without an amp, but I don't know about M3. Also any similar recs?

I've got a cheap phone because I basically only need it for checking my emails and light web browsing like once a week, and I'd rather not pay $400 just for that, to be honest. I also have a pretty large music library so even 32gb would be tiny. Yeah, I think an audio player is pretty great for people like me.

Sansa Clip Zip I got when my second Clip+ broke down.
It does what it has to do, I like it. The Clip+ was better though because it didn't waste battery power on a color display.
I'm very happy with my iPod 5.5g with rockbox.
I wouldn't mind trying a good fiio though.

I have an apple ipod mini 7th gen and hate the fact that it doesn't support FLAC and I have to use some obscure ways just to get music on the thing that doesn't require itunes

NO, that's BS. There's a steady stream of nightly builds. It just takes a long time to come up with a stable release because a good part of it is written in Assembly and other low level that takes a long time to debug. The last stable release was 2 years ago, by comparison 7zip didn't have a stable release for over 5 years until a couple weeks ago

If you really want to get into quality audio shit, start off with better headphones. Using something (relatively) high end like a FiiO X1 with regular crappy earphones would just be pointless overkill since it doesn't make much difference. After headphones either get an amp if you feel like you need it or just go straight for an audio player. If you really care about sound quality, then yeah, it's better than on a phone, especially most android ones, from my experience.
Or, you know, just get a Sansa Clip+. It's basic and old, and it only supports up to 32gb sd cards, but if you just want something that's for music, with longer battery life and don't care about any mumbo jumbo sound quality, then it's fine.

Oh yeah, I forgot that Rockbox does that kind of stuff too. My bad then. Still pretty basic on the other aspects though. IMO the X1 is worth the 30-40 more bucks, considering you're already up for buying a somewhat luxury product that you don't really need.
