I have a self built extremely high end gaming pc, a thinkpad, and a nexus 6. I had a nexus 7 but I realized I never ever used it because it's fucking pointless if you have a laptop or a big phone. So I sold it.

Because they're much more mobile than laptops. This is the best solution for browsing the internet when being out (like sitting in a fucking train, bus or airplane), pdfs, comics, watching movies, playing gayms (this can be actually done on your smartphone, but bigger screens are always better).
Personally I use Dell Venue 7 3G+ in 16GB+64GB option. It has an Atom z2560, 2GB RAM, 3G, GPS, BT, WiFi, nice 7 inch screen, battery for 14 hours of actual usage, USB host. It can be charged by power banks and other mobile devices, so I can easily charge it in my car. It's about 5 times smaller than my 11 inch thinkpad x120e.
It's a very nice device for normal people.

i owned an IconiaTab A500 which i gave to my mom, manage to flash Android 5.1 on it.
despite having a weak Tegra 2 CPU it still ok for web browsing and social apps.
currently having a Transformer T100 which i'm using to post this, i used it more than my PC.
i also Play (as spectator, mostly) UT2004 which runs at a butter smooth 70 fps.

I've been thinking about picking up a tablet lately. I have a Galaxy s5, which is a pretty decent sized phone, but something a little bigger for reading in bed would be nice. I was looking at the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7, but I hear the battery life is even worse than the S5. Is it worth going iOS with an iPad Air and splitting my apps between Android and iOS?

The Tab S2 sacrifices some battery life to make it really thin and light. I've held it at demos, and I feel the battery reduced is worth it, the thing's so light that you hardly feel it, that's what makes it great; especially that ratio and the infinite contrast makes it a great reading device
And there's nothing wrong with the previous Tab S generation either though it depends a lot on what you're planning to use them for. Personally I am using the Note 10.1 2014, and this thing can still last around 3-4 days with 9 hours SoT

Like I said, I'm pretty much just planning on using it to read in bed. I'd considered getting a Tab A, but the shitty resolution turned me away. I'd like to play a game or two on the thing, probably Hearthstone being the most likely. I was looking at the original Tab S 10.1 on amazon, but they only seem to be selling used ones and they cost almost as much as the Tab S2.

Actually i always send my laptop to sleep when i don't use it, battery lasts 2 days in sleep mode and 4/5 hours of a normal use so I truly asked for it if I find my laptop without charge. And most of the time if I need it I just open my backpack, take it, open the screen, enter password and it's ok. My $199 iPad mini 2 performs just as fast as the Air 2 (except gaming), but with much better build quality, speakers and battery life.
Windows Tablets are also a great alternative, the dual boot Chinese ones are cheap as hell and use A- reject iPad casings rejected from Foxconn and the same LCDs (again A- grade with minor backlighting bleed and no True Wide Polarizer).

I have a ASUS T100-TA. Convertible laptop rather than a genuine tablet. I use it as a tablet sometimes, it's a decent, dirt cheap x86 machine you can take anywhere without worrying about damaging it or it running out of battery.
