I have the option to get a i7 4790k and was wondering if it would be a waste. I have an overclocked i5 2500k right now, would I notice the difference?
>>
Extra 2 fps, fuck yeah you would notice
>>
>>52061983
it's about 10-15% better IPC, probably get a better OC'er than your 2500k and 4 extra threads.

You'll see a little bump in gaymin but you're probably better investing it into a better gfx card if you want a real improvement.
>>
Depends how much it'll cost you all up, once you sell the old board and chip.

Probably not worth it.
>>
Rumor has it these chips show good numbers on the overclocks but secretly throttle down to 3.7 ghz all the time negating just about all the good you think you're getting.

if i was building new i'd consider the 5820k right now instead.

Not worth it IMO. Pic related, , i5 2500k @ 4.3GHz.
>>
>>52061983
Do it. People who already have a 2500k will ALWAYS try to justify sticking with the 2500k. However the 4790k may get you like 10 fps more in games you will notice less fps drops and higher min fps. 2500k owners are just salty they can't afford to upgrade.
>>
Not really, no. Most vydia gaems run on 4 threads and if your 2500K is overclocked then it's more than enough. It's not like you have fx-4300 performance with the 2500k. You're fine.

Only reason you should upgrade your CPU is if you want to do HEVC video encoding. In that case upgrading to a haswell-e motherboard and cpu is a breddy gud idea.

This is my 4790k at stock. So I don't think that comparison is accurate. Plus most 4790k's will overclock to 4.7GHz easily, mine is able to hit 4.9 but my cooler can't handle it.

Re-ran the test, looks like there was some fuckery going on with my first one.

IMO, 20-30% more performance is not worth the 500 bucks for a new CPU+Motherboard.

For gaming, only in some more recent titles. Outside of that though, you won't see much of a difference. Main reason being, the i7 is essentially just an overclocked i5 with hyperthreading. If you aren't running any applications that can take advantage of more than 4 cores, all you're getting is a slight overclock.

Not OP but I have a similar question.

I have a $500 to spend on my PC. $300 of it is an amazon gift card.

How would you guys use that money to upgrade the following computer?

Asus Z-77 vlk
I5 3570k oc @ 4.1 ghz (runs sort of hot, think I need a new water cooler or thermal paste)
Gtx 670 2gb
1tb hdd
250gb ssd
22inch 1080p 60hz ips monitor

Pls respond.
>>
>>52068316
Tbh just buy s monitor anon. Why didn't you post your ram ?
>>
>>52068363

16gb of ram.

Speaking of monitors, I'd love to get a 4K but I think it would be pointless with my old azz gpu. No?
>>
>>52068316
I'd say if you must buy now, a 970 and a 2 terabyte hard drive. The new 14 nm GPUs will be out in around 3 or 4 months though, and will competely shit on everything current. I'd wait.
>>
>>52068465

Interesting. And I would imagone the new gpus will be compatible with my motherboard right?
>>

>>52068386
You could run games at half resolution (1080p) and still benefit from 4k in non-gaming tasks.

If you want more gaming performance, get a new GPU.

Get a new monitor or second SSD/HDD if you feel the need.

If you need more CPU performance (this won't affect gaming) then get a better cooler and OC some more.
>>
How futureproofed is i7 for vidya, considering not many games use hyperthreading, and none of them use it well?
>>
>>52068766

I'd really love to into 4K gaming but I dunno if there is a sensible way to do it with my $500 budget.
