Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

That sounds pretty nice. So it charges on the dock? And when you want to take the laptop, you don't disconnect any monitor cables or power cables, just lift it off the dock? What do you use the dock for?
>>
>>52057844
i'll ask again, /g/uys i'm considering buying an x220, the seller listed it on ebay writing LED screen, what does that mean? is it IPS or TN screen?
>>
>>52057968

Both are LED, LED is the backlight technology not the type of panel.

You can judge an IPS by its viewing angles.
>>
>>52058045
yeah i knew that, i hoped for the backlight technology to be different on different LCD types. is the TN screen that bad? how's it
>>
>>52058074
It's pretty good, the horizontal viewing angles are great but the vertical ones not so.

Color reproduction is decent.

>What Thinkpad do you have and why that model?
X61T now almost completely broken, got a T41 for Christmas
>Which OS(s) do you use and why?
Used windows 7 and Debian on the X61, Debian exclusively on the T41 as it's speedy, Windows makes it seem like a rotting corpse.

General computing stuff, just my connection to the digital world.
>Do you use a HDD or a SSD and why? What capacity and why?
Got a 120GB Samsung SSD in a sale a couple of years ago. I use it for speed though a bit more capacity would be nice.

HDD but I might install a small SSD on it just to fuck around

I've got two answers. You're all going to hate me
>What Thinkpad do you have and why that model?
t61p and x200
>Which OS(s) do you use and why?
>What do you use it for?
installing and updating ubuntu gnome for a backup or when a family member needs a pc
>Do you use a HDD or a SSD and why? What capacity and why?
hdd in both because both are slow pieces of trash that wouldn't benefit from an ssd apart from battery life
>Do you use your M-SATA slot? If so, what capacity and why?
no
>How much RAM do you have?
2gb in x200, 4gb in t61p

>What Thinkpad do you have and why that model?
Frankenpad yoga 14 (haswell) with 2015 trackpad + fixed shutoff issue
>Which OS(s) do you use and why?
Windows 10 because optimus graphics don't work on linux. I know what you're going to say. Fuck you. they don't work. and no, this isn't a "gaming laptop."
>What do you use it for?
doing school work at school. using as a fully powered machine anywhere else. good IPS display for media consumption. good enough gpu to play games at a friends house or in down time at school.
>Do you use a HDD or a SSD and why? What capacity and why?
SSD because I'm not retarded
256gb because they were still absurdly expensive when I first got it
>Do you use your M-SATA slot? If so, what capacity and why?
yes, it came with a 16gb m2 ssd by default as a caching type partition for the OS. That's what it does now. When I was trying to keep linux working on this thing i would boot off of it. Not noticeably faster than the normal SSD
>How much RAM do you have?
8gb

and before you cucks start getting mad, the thinkpad yoga 14 comes with a carbon fiber finish and has a roll cage. perhaps it's not milspec but it's basically a t440 but better in every way imaginable

My X201 emits a bit of a high pitched whine sometimes, I think it's coming from the fan. It is definitely coming from the area near the fan, and I've also replaced the HDD with an SSD, eliminating the only other moving part on the laptop.

I see on eBay that there are a lot of sellers offering replacement fan and heatsink units as a whole. How can I know if the replacement heatsink is going to be as good as the stock cooler? I assume that no matter which one I end up purchasing, I should replace the included thermal paste that they have on the heatsink?

Hey guys looking for some advice recently got a tax rebate and am looking at getting my first Thinkpad. Mainly for Web browsing, odd spot of photoshop, playing a few old games and watching movies(mainly 720 stuff)

Budget is up to £300, screen size is not to important aslong as it's 14inch +

Currently looking at the T430's on eBay at around the £200 mark with 4gb ram and hdds with around 320gb which I can just upgrade myself later on if it's not good enough. Any advice? Am I looking along the right lines or should I focus on different models.

Thanks in advance

You're wrong, it only supports up to 4GB.

quick, differences between a T420 and a T520

I found a really good one seemingly, but I don't know the differences, it seems pretty much the same with a better screen
>>
are there plans to expand carbon steel? would love something like a W using it.
>>
>>52064659
Different size, better screen (from the factory at least) and cooling on the T520.
If you're adventurous, T420 has better screens available through some custom shenanigans though those are difficult to get your hands on as far as I know.

I see the reported model is "4291WUB" which apparently is a X220?
Does that just mean it shares drivers or am I getting ripped off? A X220 is definitely smaller, so no idea.

pls respond
>>
>>52064907
>>52064981
That 4291WUB does look a bit fishy. X220 and T520 have mostly the same specs, but a T520 still shouldn't show up with an X220 model number like that.
I also don't see any mention of screen resolution on that page, meaning you risk getting a 1366x768 panel which would make you hate everything ever.

I wouldn't go for that one, familia

What is the Ultimate Thinkpad I should be looking for? 2nd generation t420? I'm not too concerned with system internals such as HDD and RAM, as those can be changed later. What screen should I look for?
>>
>>52065224
There is no "ultimate" Thinkpad. Look for the one that meets your requirements.

If X series, look for an IPS screen. If T/W series, look for 1600x900 or 1920x1080.
You can't avoid 1366x768 on older X series, but you should avoid it at all costs on T/W series.
>>
>>52065128
I made the math using the system information page and the 1366x768 screen I'm using right now, it's a 1600x900
>>
>>52065128

I've got the upgrade window appearing on my x220 running a fresh install of W7. Should I go for it, /tpg/? Will the drivers continue to operate as usual?
>>
>>52065371
I upgraded from a pirated win7 to win10 and it works fine. You can always roll back if you're not happy with it.

Some of the drivers may need to be updated, but I think windows update takes care of it.
>>
>>52065371

>>
>>52065224
The T420 is best described as the jack of all trades of Thinkpads. It has a dedicated graphics option, but it's just an entry-level card. Better than the integrated in the X series, but nothing compared to the big boys in the W series. It has a 1600x900 screen, but it's TN and isn't very good even compared to the same resolution screen in a 15" Thinkpad. The CPU is socketed and can technically be upgraded to a quad core, but the cooling isn't really designed to handle it like it is on the T520 or W520. It gets reasonable battery life and the size isn't too bad for portability, but an X220 kicks the shit out of it in both categories. The one area it excels in over everything else is price/performance. It's "ultimate" in the sense that it's the best Thinkpad to buy if you don't know what Thinkpad to buy, but can only afford to buy one.
>>
>>52065252
What math ?
Just fucking ask the seller about the resolution.

>>52065342
It's probably legit then.
>>
>>52065470
Yeah upon thinking for longer than 30 seconds I just asked him. I suspect it's 1366x768 now, which considering it's a T520 means he changed the screen, right? Isn't 1600x900 the default?
>>
>>52060812
Lenovo says the max is 8, but you can put 16 in. I have 12 in mine and it just werks
>>
>>52065519
>Lenovo says the max is 8, but you can put 16 in
But what does that mean? The max is clearly not 8 when it can support 16.
>>
>>52065483
No, 1366x768 is the "default" screen in the base configuration for a T520.
The 1600x900 and 1920x1080 panels were available from the factory in the higher-end configurations and as an option if you customized it. They're still very easy to get your hands on for a relatively cheap price, and only require a little technical know-how and carefulness to upgrade from a 1366x768 panel.
>>
>>52065483
>>52065470

nm, seller confirmed 1600x900 so I'm getting it and ruining his perfect score if he lied about anything

newer model maybe?
>>
>>52057858
>What Thinkpad do you have and why that model?
X220, small with nice keyboard.
>Which OS(s) do you use and why?
Mint, first time using Linux
>What do you use it for?
Chinese cartoons and shitposting.
>Do you use a HDD or a SSD and why?
Both, it came with HDD and I added the ssd.
What capacity and why?
125ssd for OS, 300 HDD for storage
>Do you use your M-SATA slot? If so, what capacity and why?
Yes, for the ssd
>How much RAM do you have?
12gb
>>
>>52065569
That's where different configuration come into play. What you're looking at there isn't the cheapest baseline T520, different configs have different part/type numbers.

Any Scandis with a T420 ITT?
The only decent reseller in Norway seems to be refurb.no, but they charge 4000 Nok (~420 EUR) for the "high-end" version (1600x900, 128GB SSD, i5-2520M).
Are there any other decent resellers, and should I still be looking at a T420 at that price? I need a Uni Computer (Comp Sci) so it seems like the best option I have, but I dont have any experience here.
Ordering internationally isn't an option as I get fucked in the ass by import tax.

So, got a story for you

I had a Thinkpad about a year ago that was stolen from me
When I say stolen, I mean my stepmom hid it from my dad during a nasty divorce (he had it as a loan for work)
At the time, I had an MSI FX603 I was playing with, so I didn't care. I had Prey installed, so I just set it to missing and waited

Today, it's online. The computer had no password (thanks, Dad!) And due to the way she got the machine, I technically can't report it stolen because my only proof of ownership is Prey

I have an IP, MAC, etc. I'd like to ruin the thing to a point she junks it. I know where she lives, so I can go get it from the garbage later. What can I do with all this?

Also, I set it up. No AV, just had to use common sense

Those functionalities will work with any decent distro. If you aren't familiar with linux I suggest Ubuntu. The fingerprint reader and webcam work out of the box. You can encrypt your drive(s) too.
If you want to try something other than Ubuntu all of that will still work, though it may require some tinkering. You might want to try Debian, Fedora, Arch or Gentoo.

I wanna be able to do some photo editing and light graphic design work. Are there any Thinkpads that have a decent screen/color accuracy? I was looking at the x220 tablet because I liked that it had a stylus with the touchscreen with wacom digitizers but from what I read even the IPS screen is kinda meh.
>>
>>52070325
W series for colour accuracy.
W520 has a 95% gamut 1920x1080 panel and a hardware calibrator built into the wrist rest. It's a TN panel, but it's as good as it gets when it comes to colour accuracy in the *20 series. Alternatively, T520 also has the same 95% gamut panel available, but no hardware calibrator on that model.

Not sure how much you have to step it up to get an IPS panel in a W machine.
>>
>>52070325

Probably only the workstations (W series) and the carbon have accurate panels. More so the W series with built-in colorimeter.

With laptops you compromise, just get a nice external monitor and the IPS x220. Or a mac and enjoy shit quality control and bending over at the apple store for repairs.

just get genuine, used if you had to

the t500 I bought came with a genuine 6 cell that didn't hold a charge and an off-brand 9 cell and off-brand battery

some problems I've had with the battery include the thing getting unreasonably hot during normal use, granted it could have been a pebkac issue but the used genuine 9 cell I bought hasn't got anywhere near as hot (despite being banged up in the mail and not being perfectly straight), and more concerning, the plastic case breaking meaning the locking mechanism failing and the thing possibly falling apart with a strong enough knock

the off-brand charger seemed fine, other than the 3 pin connector only having a cable with 2 conductors...just soldered to the 3 pin connector on 1 end and connected to the 3 pin plug on the other... with metal ground pin on the plug side... the used bashed up genuine charger I bought weighs an absolute ton more, gives me a lot more peace of mind

T420: best value under $300, was between this or X220/230, wanted >768 resolution and ability to swap to quad core

Win7Pro only, tried Win10 but some bugs (mainly Photoshop) made me switch back for now. Have used linux in the past but need muh application support

graphic design, learning to program, muh games, muh chinaman cartoons

SSD main drive (120gb 850 evo meme): lightning fast loading is not a placebo
HDD secondary drive in place of cdrom (320gb WD blue that came with the T420): storage

don't use the msata, a SSD of any usable size would cost more than the entire laptop

8gb ram

Who /sortofwant/ here

Hey guys I have been looking for a Laptop for 200-300€ with the following characteristics:

>Dedicated GPU for Video Editing/Directx 11/Open GL light gaming/OpenCL
>Quad Core CPU
>Can have be upgraded to 16-32 GB of ram
>2 Hard drives (Not including ultra bay)
>Dock
Anything available at this price range?
I can honestly make due without it being able to play modern video games mostly doing retro/PS2 and things like DoTA2.(but it has to be atleast capable of running directx 11, intel HD 3000 isn't good enough for me)

And then I'm also going to work largelly in 2d Autocad and Video edditing and run OpenCL programs.
>>
>>52072888
Thanks but for that price i had a nearly new T430 two years ago.
>>
Guise, I need 15.6" (or bigger) with good battery life.
Is E550 good choice or should I settle for IdeaPad?
>>
>>52073091
27 of them?

T520 or T530 with 9-cell battery
>>
So after a little research, it appears to my untrained newfag eye that the T420 is capable of accepting an Alienware m14x r2 display like this one http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AV56SNM/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_awdm_nJYFwb1NK3WEP
Without any weird cable routing or hardware modifications. Correct me if I'm wrong on anything I've said so far, but I'm unsure if I need to modify the bios to install this screen assuming everything I've said is right. Any help lads?
>>
>>52073063
It might be possible in America, but since you're asking in Euros you're most likely fucked. T420s are around that price in Europe and what you're really looking for is a W520. The T420 does technically meet your needs, as it has a dedicated GPU option, can take a quad core CPU, maxes RAM out at 16GB, and has an mSATA and SATA slot so you can have two drives before accounting for Ultrabay. It's really the bare minimum though, that GPU is an entry-level wimp, the cooling wasn't designed to handle a quadcore, you can't upgrade to 32GB of RAM, and the mSATA slot is probably not what you're looking for.
>>
>>52072888
...there's only 25 Thinkpads in that pile
>>
Is there fucking anything that compares to my R61? The build quality, the keyboard, the trackpoint; it's all perfect. If this existed with modern hardware, I would pay anything for it. The C2D and 2GB RAM isn't cutting it anymore with how bloated windows is for the programs I need it for. Are the new thinkpads really no comparison or should I drop the cash? I'm seriously considering a T450/T550. I don't want one of these faggoty 12.5" or 13" things. Even 14" is ridiculous unless it's 1600x900 at minimum. Even 1920x1080 in 2016 is fucking silly.

>>52072888
damn you're paying $22 each. That's awesome if they're all working.

>>
>>52071292
Dear God, that has to be one of the worst thermal paste applications I've ever seen. What the hell were those Chinamen thinking?
>>
>>52073511
The docks for older Thinkpads (I think the --00 generation and maybe 60/61 too?) had a PCI-E slot you could plug a desktop GPU into for use with your docked Thinkpad. They don't have that anymore, although eGPU is still a possibility on newer Thinkpads. Docks these days mostly just add more ports and an extra Ultrabay, and let you plug all your stuff into the dock and then just lift the Thinkpad out when you need to take it somewhere, rather than having to unplug your mouse, monitor, power adapter, etc. each time you wanted to take a shit in the middle of shitposting.

>>52073244
Time to go bargain hunting for a w520 and jew everyone I know to pay their debts to me.
Thanks.

bumping question.
>>
>>52073614
You can also consider the HP and Dell alternatives, the Elitebook 8460w/8560w and Precision M4600 respectively. The price relation of the three brands seems to vary by area and you might be able to find a better deal on one of those in your area than you would on the equivalent Thinkpad.
>>
alright guys, x140e for $400 or 11e for $270?
>>

Thinkwiki, search for your model. :^)

>>52073585
You could get them, and they worked with the 61/60 series as well.

When I first went off to university, I bought a T400 with just the basic shitty integrated graphics and an advanced docking station. The main problem with it is that you could only use low-profile single PCI graphics cards, which sort of limited its abilities to make your Thinkpad into a portable gaming station. I think I initially tried cramming in a Radeon HD 4670 from my old gaming desktop, but it wouldn't fit because of the fucking fan. I had to settle for an older HD 3450 with a heatsink, which performed about as well as the switchable Mobility Radeon HD 3470 I could have otherwise had. After I finished first year university, I bought a Radeon HD 5450 on the cheap, which massively improved performance, but was still a decidedly budget-minded card with pretty low performance relative to other things in the Radeon range. Still, you COULD upgrade the GPU your laptop "used", which was worth something.

In the end the whole "lack of space" issue became a moot point after I moved out of residence, and I would have been far better off with a mini-ITX rig. But if you're a poorfag or just like unorthodox arrangements, then the Advanced dock is kinda neat. It's bullshit that they no longer offer it, but I guess they would rather have people upgrading their laptops every year or two rather than just swapping in a new eGPU.

Both awful prices for awful machines. Get an X220, some guy on ebay is selling them for $100 with no RAM, HDD, or AC adapter.
>>
What is the difference between the T450 and the T550 that is not related to the larger screen/numpad? Does the T550 have better thermals?

The general trend in the relationship of 14 and 15 inch T series is that the 15 inch ones have better screens and cooling to compensate for their seriously massive size. Although I can't imagine a ULV Broadwell with integrated graphics ever getting hot under any workload. In older generations the 15" models also supported quad core CPUs, but in the age of muh thin and light that seems to no longer be an option.
>>
>>52074053
x220 obviously has the better keyboard and layout, but how does performance compare to something newer like the 11e?

All in all it's breddy gud, some cosmetic scratching and whatnot but that doesn't really matter to me.

Full-voltage Sandy Bridge doesn't fuck around. You might not pull the same battery life, but the X220 still manages around an hour per cell and has the slice battery if you can find one.

$100, bring your own RAM, storage, and AC adapter. Even if you have to purchase all of those you shouldn't end up spending over $200 in total.
>>
>>52074485
>>52074529
Also, if you're gonna buy an HDD instead of an SSD, know that the X220's SATA bay will only take 7mm drives. If you're getting an SSD this doesn't matter since they're all 7mm.

Lenovo x1 Carbon 3rd gen

Windows 8.1, I just got the laptop recently and havent bothered to install linux on it. I'm a pretty big noob when it comes to linux so I'm just planning on trying out xubuntu.

Schoolwork, web browsing, watching movies in bed, some light photo editing when I'm on vacation.

512GB pci-e ssd. Just wanted a lot of storage I guess.

No, I don't believe it has an m-sata slot.

8GB
