Personally I dumped Windows for OSX around 2007 and after a lot of tinkering with UNIX stuff in OSX all my desktops have since then run Linux (while my laptops run OSX). But even if I didn't require those programs I would still use windows. If you use qt-based software, you will have thumbnails in your file picker.
If you use the GNU's Not Unix Object Model Environment Image Manipulation Program Toolkit for your UIs you will definitely notice a lack of features, and even a progressive loss of features for no reason as you move from version two to three (such as typeahead file search in the file picker and compact aesthetics that even fucking macs sport these days). People have, in fact, fixed these problems because it IS free software, but you will not use those fixes. They go against the "philosophy" of the program and its "design goals" ("be shit" and "drive away non-autistic users" respectrively), so the main developers who are also in bed with the people who package linux distros do not include them in their version of software, and you have to compile everything yourself if you want them.
