I've been using Swype ever since I got a smart phone, since I thought it'd help me type faster. I think tapping -> word prediction might actually be faster than swiping and correcting. I haven't tried it out since I don't use my phone much, but most people I know seem to type faster than me on their phone.
Why are you even using swipe? You can't touch type on a phone in 2015? I can get up to 60 WPM on a good day typing on my phone in portrait mode.
Swype actually works really well once you use it a while, but it has a pretty steep learning curve. I had to force myself to use it a while before I was even on par its my regular texting speed, but eventually it has the potential to be a lot faster.

The only time I ever use swype is when I drag my finger across my screen by accident. Even if the word comes out right I delete it and retype it properly because I don't want my phone getting any ideas thinking it's better than me or something.

You can dismiss the top row of numbers and if you want to type a number you can swipe up on the corresponding letter. e.g q=1 w=2 e=3

Incidentally, this phone has its own implementation of Swype built in.
It only works in ordinary text fields (no passwords or other special ones), but I digress
So, what I've noticed is that the best way to get the word you want, and you already know that there are a bunch of letters collinear with each other, that you just swipe a loop around each letter.

Wrote this with one hand using swype. Did not even have to tap any alternate word suggestions. You need to use for a couple of days for it to learn your typing behaviour. It's also the only keyboard which supports my language well.
