>hipster web companies pay a lot.
Quite literally, in your dreams.
Web Devs are lucky to see $50k. Yet alone anything more.
And that's after decades in the field, and buckets full of certs and qualifications.
No student right out of College is going to see 6 figures.
Hell, no student will ever see 6 figures until they've been working in a field for 5-10 years.

Anon, what you say isn't true. It all depends whether or not you know people and of course where you go to school and what you did in that school(not grade wise, activity wise). This chick in my shitty school got an internship at NASA this past semester and now she's coming back to finish school. Once she's done with school, she can go back and work for them full time for 6 figs. My cousins wife didn't have a job until she was 23 and fresh out of college. She makes over 100k working at a lab at some University.
It's all about what you do, who you know and where you come from.

Make sure you have a firm understanding of concepts from 351 and 420. 451 is really a good class too, much better than 351 since kruskal doesn't teach it. And don't worry too much taking all the hard classes or gpa, none of that shit matters just make sure get an internship and ace ur interview

If you're in an area with a lot of demand for dev jobs you don't even need a degree for six figures.

Last year, around Jan or so I broke into the industry in silicon valley. Not only was it my first formal dev job, but it was my first job *period* and they still started me out at $100k.

I recently changed jobs and jumped to $125k. By next year my experience levels will start to approach what's considered "senior" out here (which I think is bullshit but whatever) and I'll probably me able to swing $135k - $150k.

And I don't have a degree at all. I dropped out of uni after taking some art classes. I'm entirely self-taught.

TLDR: If you want a well-paid dev job don't live somewhere without a thriving tech industry

until our economy went shit after the whole obama/saudi oil price thing happened, the average in norway was $74k per year, with people working within fishing and oild getting a starting wage of $140k and usually 3 weeks on the rig and then 3 weeks off. a friend of mine who was a ocean electrician ended up being 2 months on and x amount of months off and still made a million nok every year, so I'd say thats only true for poor nations like the US.

Most of those bootcamps have some really shitty tactics. There was one bootcamp that would artificially inflate the grad job placement rate by giving everyone in the bootcamp that didn't get an offer a job to teach at the bootcamp. It's only going to get happen more and more as abstraction continues to rise. This is why CS is a meem in 2015. Now it's wimin, in 10 years they'll be hiring chimps because churning out code is getting so simple.
It's getting hard to find areas of CS that maintain high difficulty and specialization levels that allow for the maintenance of job security

No, the problem is the term third world country is outdated. Used to be, any country aligned with the soviet block or China was a second world country, and third wolrd country were the ones that aligned with neither the soviets nor the US.

Nowadays we're better off using Developed and Underdeveloped (or if you want to be politically correct, Developing) countries.

Kickboxing fights are at most 5 3 minute rounds and even shorter if there is a finish. I only train 2 to 3 hours a day 5 days a week, that leaves a lot of free time.
Honestly, level of competition took a pretty drastic fall in the early 2000's, most people, even if they aren't very athletic and as long as they have some sort of heart/fighting spirit, could make a living from it with 1 to 2 years of serious training.

Apply everywhere man, you're a bit late though. Should have mass spammed your resume through career4terps at the end of summer. You're still good though, spring career fair is about to come up. Although it's mostly local companies that are still looking for internships at the spring ones, still good experience. My first internship was with a little company in Rockville and I learned a lot.

>you're a bit late though

i'm only a first year student, but I am a semester behind as I came in undecided and declared for the spring. I'm on par wih the math reqs though and am thinking of taking 132 during the summer to catch up. OIT is hiring student workers for some java web stuff and I am thinking of applying towards the end of the spring semester because i have background with html and javascript, which they said they were looking for as well as some java...

I don't know why I am telling you this, maybe I just need some validation.
>>
>>52042926
Haha you're fine man, we all need a bit of validation some time. I thought you were a senior or something. Just make sure you get an internship soph/junior year to set you up for your job search. Cracking the Coding Interview is a great resource for technical questions and taking 132 in the summer isn't a bad idea at all, but remember to relax and enjoy college you still have plenty of time. Have fun and go get fucked up at Corner Stone man, once you hit 200s/300s level cs courses you'll have a lot less time to go out. Sophomore year I was virtually a pothead shut-in.

How did you break into the industry?

About to finish my Masters in business analytics (Data science, data analytics, big data, etc.) but I don't go to a super fancy school or anything, so I'm worried that I won't be able to get involved in a tech job and I live fairly close to silicon valley.

What should I do to make 100k starting?
>>

Good portfolio, did pro bono works for local nonprofits that took off. Six figures is pretty standard for bay area though.
>>
>>52042216
I know 115k isn't much for that area, I'm just saying that its definetly possible to get six figures as a developer straight out of college.

Keep in mind that I'm not explicitly a 'frontend web developer', I'm a software engineer, level 3, as are most new grads. But I work on frontend web development.

At lower levels hardware, and by lower levels I mean up to the 150k mark. Higher levels, such as an Oracle developer will surpass hardware engineers/architects. I live in CO so exceeding 100kwhen a high end apartment runs 1200 puts you in a pretty good place..

You learn how to think in a good CS program and learn a lot of theory. CS will not ready you for the industry, remember you'll always have to learn about shit on your own. Have fun, don't be an idiot. Get internships and do well on interviews.

Are you confusing wordpress web dev from real web dev or something? The market for node/angular/Web is not right now. I see job postings for mid/senior front end devs are making like 100k+ in tech hubs and big cities
>>
100k isn't a lot in CA or NYC. 70-75k in tech hub centers like RTP and Austin is more than 100k in San Francisco and Manhattan.

>Literally apply to a company and hopefully you'll get an interview.

Yep, this. I just dropped applications in as many places as I could and hoped for the best. It definitely helps if you've got stuff on Github you can show off and mention on your resume, as does having stuff out in an app store or up on the web.

It's a slog, but it pays off. After a couple weeks of spamming applications the calls and emails started rolling in. For about a month I was doing 2-4 calls per day and at least a couple in-persons per week. Towards the end of the month I got a call back from one of the places that I did an onsite interview with, and surprise, they like me and want to offer me a position!

So yeah, put in effort and you'll be rewarded.

>>52048182
At least it's all in one lump and won't sneak up on you like car costs will.
>>
>>52050907
Take those COL calculators with a grain of salt. You'll be paying more in rent and food but there's no question you'll be stashing away more money in those areas if you budget well. Price of goods like laptops are the same no matter where you go.
>>
>>52039839
Canada has literally the worst pay for developers among the western countries. Good job being born in a shithole
>>
>>52051333
I pay less than $700 In an apartment that would cost $1,500 in NYC and eat at restaurants for less than $30-50 that would cost $100-150. I save a crap ton of money and live like a king making over 75k in a place where the average is 30-40k or less. COL have a lot of merit to them.
>>
>>52051546
Yeah they definitely have merit. You're totally right that you can have a higher quality of life in the low cost areas but you could get an shithole with roommates in the bay area for 700 and just never eat out and you'd save more money in the long run.
I just don't like people using those calculators as a direct wage conversion between different areas.
>>
>>52051586
You could do this or that. Point is I am top % in my city. In order to have the same quality of living in CA or NYC I'd have to make over 120k. Potentially 150k or more depending on bonus e etc.
