some games actually do use more than 2 cores. Look back to when GTA V came out. The came wouldn't even launch on the pentium g3258 because it only had 2 cores where as even the Athlon 860k was able to run it no problem.
Once the game devs got it to work (around 2 weeks after launch) it ran fine albeit each core being used like 85% usage.
That said I have the non overclockable pentium G3260. I use it in my Mitx PC for school/porn/anime.
Gaming? 4690k all day erry day.
They don't, most new(and even many new-ish) AAA games see significant performance increase for using quadcore or better instead of dualcore.

I actually had a G3258, but I upgrade to an i5 just so I can play cities skylines. I've only r gotten into Pc buildingfor a year now so can't say that much.
I managed to overclock it to 4.6 without touching the voltage. Was really god like, but more recent games are requiring four cores plus there is DX12. Pic related is my beast

I have an fx6300 paired with a gtx970
Ran older games just fine. Newer titles the cpu really starts to bottleneck.
Now I have an i5 4690k and a board for it. I just never installed it.
That being said If I take out the fx6300 cpu and 990fx chipset,
and install the i5 4690k with X99 chipset.
Will I notice a dramatic increase in performance when gaymen? Will it be worth it?
Also When I swap chipsets and cpu's will I have to reload every game/program that I installed? Because honestly I have 3tb worth of games and programs. And I really don't want to go through pain of loading all that back on again(for the 4th time).

No i5 is compatible with x99 chipset. You'll need z97 or other 1150 socked MOBO for the i5.
You'll get pretty significant performance increase, but I'm pretty sure that you'll have to reinstall windows(and with that, basically everything else) if you change motherboard. Of course, if you use linux, that won't be a problem.

the g3258 is enough about gaming on 1080p and not on ultra settings. As far as I know, it's a cheap, decent CPU, but may not be a very good idea for the future (if you plan to upgrade your GPU). It may be a bottleneck. Maybe going with the 4690K is a better idea, if you plan to use it in the future with upgrading your GPU card.

Are you retarded? It can barely keep up paired with a 750 Ti and targeting 30fps. It's going to bottleneck any card more powerful than that hard. Good luck running any of the recent big releases like Fallout 4, Just Cause 3 or Ass Creed: Syndicate, all of which give a 4790K a good thrashing.
