Gonna buy an mp3 player as I recently purchased a pair of HD 598's. I've heard from a friend that pic related is the way to go. Consensus? Suggestions on other mp3 players?

I know /g/ hates apple, but this really is the goat mp3 player. Sucks how much you gotta pay for a used one now though.

Honestly, I was thinking of picking one of these up just for the 120gb, but you still have people charging like 200+ euro for even the smaller memory 1st gens.

Listen up, I'll teach you all about ipods.

Get a 5th gen. They're customizable as fuck. You can pull off the front cover and get into all the internals and replace them to your needs without needing anything fancy like soldering.

You can get a full, flash/SSD based replacement for the hard drive here: http://www.iflash.xyz/ includes mSATA adapters so you can potentially have an ipod with 1TB of storage.

You can also get Rockbox on it, which is much better firmware than the Apple software and probably the best DAP firmware in general.

I got a fiio to replace mine after it broke and it just isn't the same...
>>
>>52035792
Mine looks like it's been to war and still works perfectly. I feel like only have to charge it a couple times a year too.
>>
>>52035582
Don't bother. Clip+ won't play any better than your smartphone, in fact it will play worse. If you are going to get meme3 player then get something decent, consider anything by FiiO. If you are not willing to spend that much then just don't bother.
>>
>>52036154
Why would you reccomend FiiO over something like the HiFiMan DAPs or A&Ks which use superior DACs?
>>
>>52036181
Because something like FiiO X1 is much more entry level and affordable. Keep in mind that OP literally wanted to use his HD558 with clip+
>>
>>52036247
OP here. I am by no means experienced with advanced audio. Entry level would be perfect as I'd like to get more into this shit in the future as I get a hold of more money.
>>
>>52035941
This. I bought one years ago and it works perfectly. If it ever doesn't, then I'll shell out the 20 bucks for a new one.
Music is drag and drop, light weight for the gym, and actually has a UI unlike the ipod micro.
>>
>>52036053
I've owned 3 Clip+ and had hardware issues on the first two. Third time is a charm though. My old Clip was great too.

I wouldn't buy anything not supported by rockbox. Muh customizable skip, shortcuts, etc
>>
You can't even buy Clip+'s new anymore, since they discontinued them in favor or some shit that team Rockbox isn't even bothering doing ports to, so you basically have to buy one on eBay at this point, and buying a Clip+ now is just investing in a future tragedy, as their OLED's still like to decompose without warning, and the batteries eventually go at some point, and I've yet to find a concrete battery upgrade guide for mine, which needs a power bank for long engagements

I love it to death now that I got a cheap 64GB microSD card, but the battery issue is still annoying, and recompressing all my shit to VBR MP3 only barely helps with the battery life

Just because he's currently uneducated doesn't mean he should buy something that he'll have to upgrade from later.

That said with a 1 ohm output impedance the Clip+ is in no way a bad shout as it'd be able to power his 598's without an additional amp.

>>52036279
You do have another option of just buying a headphone DAC/AMP like the one in the picture and playing FLACs from your phone.

The X5 is OK, though it does have limitations.

No onboard storage.
UI is bullshit to navigate with the scroll wheel.
XBOX hueg.
Battery takes eons to charge.
Soundstage is claustrophobic.
Sound is coloured.

Love my clip+ for workouts and places I can't afford to lose my phone or battery time like amusement Parks. Love it!
>>

>which use superior DACs
Irrelevant, and not necessarily true. The DAC is not the real limiting factor of the sound quality.

>>52036359
>1 ohm output impedance the Clip+ is in no way a bad shout as it'd be able to power his 598's without an additional amp
Not quite how that works.
>>
>>52036676
>The DAC is not the real limiting factor of the sound quality.
But it makes a huge difference all the same, which is why certain chips are regarded as objectively better than others.

>Not quite how that works.
Educate me.
>>
>>52035844
Its not just about storage space and screen quality, a phone has way shittier sound than a good music player
>>
>>52036476
That was before the discontinuation if it was a year ago, so replacing your Clip+ in this day and age will shock someone who bought one pre-gouging
>>
>>52036797
Not necessarily. The Nexus S has a Wolfson DAC chip and sounds as good as a lot of high end DAPs.
>>
>>52035687
Not like you would know anything about that.

>>52036758
>But it makes a huge difference all the same, which is why certain chips are regarded as objectively better than others.
The limiting factor is in the op-amp that drives the headphone directly. Digital conversion isn't. The op-amps can be integrated into the D/A module or handled off the chip. Both types of solutions exist in portable audio, phones and dedicated players.

>Educate me
It's incomplete. Output impedance is something that varies with frequency, but our concerns lie with voltage division and voltage sensitivity.
The Clip+ is also kinda noisy too.
>>
>>52036181
Are Hifiman players not complete garbage anymore? After the utter disaster that was the HM-601/602 I'm inclined to think they have literal monkeys for engineers.
>>
MP3 players are a 4chan meme. Don't be retarded and just use your phone. This isn't the fucking early 2000s, you don't need a dedicated device for music on the go.

well designed mp3 player > well designed phone

I can get 40hrs of music playback before my iPod dies, and that doesn't even touch my phone battery. You'd be out of music and phone after that period of time.
>>
>>52035582

I own it. It's good. I've jogged with it well over 100 miles and it still works flawlessly. Battery is awesome also. I still don't have the feminine body I deserve tho.
>>
>>52037364
wow you can afford a $400 item I'm so impressed

Meanwhile half the plant have smartphones that cost $700+

>>52037385
lol all smartphones have standby time that lasts for a WEEK you retard. Your shitty ipod won't can't even have a on screen time longer than 2 hours. Use a smartphone the same way you would use a mp3 player and it'll ***literally*** last you 10x longer
>>
Clip+ is the perfect portable player. Its only drawback is a slight noise floor which doesn't matter in the least for actual portable use.
>>
>>52037307
That is not compelling and reflects poorly on their engineering, although I'm not sure if that is actually audible outside of single sine testing.
What I really want to see if the performance with a load, and we can see the real incompetence at work.
I also knew that Hifiman was very short on competent engineers, I remembered they seemed a little desperate a years or so ago looking for someone who could actually do analog design.

I sometimes hear bits from a Hifiman rep, he occasionally tells of amusing tales of Fang Bian bitching at him over negative reviews on their headphones.

>>
>>52037592
What I wonder is why would you want two large lumps in your pockets when out and about? The Clip+, in addition to its excellent sound quality, is tiny and has a belt clip.
>>
>>52037716
>Clipping anything to your belt
Do you keep it next to your Bat-Shark-Repellant-Spay?
>>
>>52037558
>slight noise floor
Not that low, especially with high efficiency balanced armatures.
The noise measurement was about -85-90dBV, IEMs can have sensitivity up to 125-130 dB SPL/1V.

>>52037364
I can't say I care. I spent thousands on portable audio to realize that the bigger differences could be had with a PEQ/convolution on a half decent smartphone, something that is near non-existent on portable players. Convenience and sound quality.

iRiver makes these players and has the audacity to charge you kilobucks for them, with average quality headamps at best and mediocre battery life. That they decide finally put parametric EQ on the higher models.
>>
>>52037836
Not having to fiddle with anything to get great sound is more convenient for me. Fully aware that I'm paying well over the odds for the styling and build materials. That doesn't phase me.
>>
>>52037716
>Clip+, in addition to its excellent sound quality
Literally smartphone sound quality. No point in even using clipp anymore, unless for running/workout.
>>
I'm still using an ipod 30gb from 2005. The thing just refuses to die. The only problem is the battery life isn't what it used to be.
>>
>>52039241
Buy a broken one and replace the battery yourself.
>>
>>52039255
Ehh its not that bad yet. Its still lasts all day when I have hooked up to my car stereo and its not charging when its hooked up. Also how hard is that to do? Is that something I could figure out with extensive googling?
>>
>>52035844
30$ you sure bro?
>>
>>52039241
You can buy batteries, you can buy almost every replacement part for the ipod video.
>>
>>52038063
It has 96dB SNR and is otherwise perfectly transparent. Unless you love the shit out of your 24bit FLAC 1812 cannon shots you won't ever hear the hiss unless you're using it in a non-portable setting.
>>
>>52040275
>96dB SNR
It does not do so, where are you pulling this number from? It is closer to 85dB if anything.
>>
>>52040355
http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/sansa-clip-measured.html

I misremembered. But 89.7dB is nonetheless A-OK for portable use. A slight hiss is a minor demerit for use at home.
>>
>>52037364

>razer mousepad

ahaha
>>
>>52040425
>89.7dB
A-weighted to full scale output, which de-emphasizes HF noise. This is different from actual noise level, measured in voltage.
I already said how a real problem can manifest itself, and Shure IEMs that boast high isolation with extreme high sensitivity are a very notable example. Other IEMs have similar issues, if not necessarily to the same extent.
>>
>>52040508
I use my Clip+ with Etymotic HF5s for what it's worth. Mostly use it for lifting and biking.
>>
>>52040528
HF5 isn't quite the pinnacle of IEM sensitivity, about 9-10dB less the most sensitive sets.

Yes I got that. Its actually a really terrible device. Firmware full of bugs, barely manages to display album art correctly (and still can't read embedded album art in tags). Lots of lag in the UI navigation (Like you cant browse to album and play and then go back to the album view, you have to go back to the main menu and go down to the album view and start over from the beginning of the list).

Id recommend coughing up the rest of the 40 dollars and get an X1 or at least wait a couple months until they fix the godawful firmware
>>
>>52041286
Oh and the worst bug is it just randomly cuts tags in half. Like if I have an album called foobar and another album called foobarbaz it usually just cuts them both down to foo or fooba and it loads both of them at the same time. Just rediculous shit like that which shouldn't have ever made it past the testing phase.
>>
>>52041286
they released a new firmware update like a week ago did that not fix everything?
>>
>>52041390
Yeah I upgraded to that. It's a little bit better and fixed a few annoying bugs like how you couldn't go to the system/settings menu if you weren't on the 'now playing' screen, and files not being in order. But the issues I mentioned are still there
