My dad just upgraded from his 2007 Apple iMac to a brand new one. Parents are pretty computerphobic; never could get a grasp of my old computer I set up so they could view family photos. Then I bought and old iPad, loaded everything onto that, showed them the basics and my dad instantly took to it. Though he spends most of his time on it on YouTube looking up gardening and carpentry stuff.

He is running Windows 7 pro only because the software he uses to tune the turbos on his car is a bitch to get working on linux.

My dad just uses what his company gives him for computers. He used to get all sorts of Thinkpads from his business, but I onloy really remember the T41, R61, and T420 he had. He had a couple before the T41, but I can't remember what model they were. Now he uses whatever the company grade HP laptop is. I haven't seen it, but it must be pretty decent.

We're both pretty sick of dealing with Linux, and we ditched Windows for good years ago. I really don't feel like trying to get OS X working on a ThinkPad (especially for someone else who needs it to "just work" and keep working reliably. As such, he's set on getting some sort of Mac or iPad to replace the T23. My mom's Early 2008 MBP is getting a bit dated as well, so both parents will probably be getting some sorts of new Apple devices within the coming months.

I repurposed an old Macbook for him, one of those white Core 2 Duos. Only had 3 gigs of RAM and an 80GB hard drive lying around, and it only goes up to Lion. All he needs it for is Excel and very occasional internet use like email. Works perfectly for his needs.

I won the parents lottery when I was born: both of my parents do IT + Programming professionally. Mom stopped when she had kids, but my dad still does and runs his own business.
My dad hadn't built a PC in a while because be was sick of dealing with the time it took up to build and troubleshoot when he could be making money doing work for clients instead. So he bought the parts he wanted recently and I put it together and troubleshooted it for him. He enjoys it.
