What is the best computer configuration for a university student?

>cheap laptop/nice desktop in room
>nice laptop only
>desktop only
>nothing at all and use computer labs
>cheap laptop and use computer labs for anything intensive

ThinkPad-T450.jpg
272 KB, 1280x1168
starting with mine

t450 only

it will handle everything university related

thinkpad quality

niggers won't steal it because it's not a macbook

go to computer labs for intensive shit
>>
>>52033075
A laptop or tablet like a surface with long battery life and either a sick with screen and keyboard or a desktop computer.

Something portable with good battery life for mobile work and note taking and a decent desk setup for extended typing.
>>
>>52033128
Dock, not sick
>>
>>52033075

A powerful desktop and a used ThinkPad/Elitebook, I think.

Pick the lighter laptops though, unless you want to get stronger biceps and back muscles.
>>
>>52033075
>Macbook Pro
>iPad
>iPhone

anything else and you're literally asking to have no life 2bh

anything else and you're asking to have a well made product
>>

>chinkpad quality

>a positive thing
>>
>>52033128
>>52033187
>desktop
literally why

you're going to have to pirate all of the software that you could just go to computer lab and use.
>>
>>52033075
Desktop plus cheap laptop (so niggers dont assault you)
I probably would recommend a laptop that is not too big, my 15 inch laptop broke my backpack because its too heavy.
>>
>>52033204
This'll work well enough ebin memes aside, if all you need is a word processor or a light compiler this is fine. Prices with educational discount aren't bad either
>>
cheap laptop only.
>desktop
you don't have time for games anon, you're supposed to be studying.
>>
>>52033239
Multiple monitors are amazing for productivity.
I have a triple monitor setup and if I need any specific computer lab software I can just remote in.
>>
>>52033187

>>52033217
but anon, life shouldn't be about having "nice" products (not to say apple doesn't make quality gear). products are just things, what should matter is people, and apple is a company that enables people to connect with one another, using services such as iMessage.
>>
>>52033239
I needed mine for virtual machines and for word processing mostly, didn't have to pirate anything though because most of what we used was FOSS or gratis, I just needed enough grunt to virtualize some pretty large networks.
>>
>>52033276
>productivity
you're going to be doing one thing so who gives a shit
>>
>>52033075
get a chromebook and install an OS with libc and gcc. macbook air is good too if you have the money.

you can do that with any ULV i5 laptop

OP, I have a desktop I built and a used Chromebook, and I firmly believe that's the best bang for your buck combo. I'm out $620 between the two of them and have absolutely zero complaints. Let me know if you have any questions.
>>
get a macbook pro or windows desktop, any windows laptop will be shit tier quality but if you need to use a computer in class you'll want the macbook so you don't ooze autism in front of your classmates
>>
>>52033654
so many of you faggots say shit like this that i almost don't think it's a meme. are college students really so fucking insecure that they buy macbooks just so the guy sitting next to you or your roomate doesn't go
>wtf is that
like who gives a shit?
>>
>>52033594
Isn't it annoying to move your desktop to different dorm rooms/your off campus housing etc? i don't want to carry a tower and monitor with me everywhere and it seems like an easy way to stay in your room which doesn't seem like a good idea.
>>
Definitely a desktop. So much more comfy. I also have a laptop, but resort to my desktop for all work if not on the move.
>>
>>52033966
once again, why not save your money and go to the computer lab?
>>
>>52033075
>cheap laptop/nice desktop in room
This. T410 w/ 60GB SSD running Linux for work, desktop (FX-8350, GTX 670, 8GB DDR3) running Windows for games.
>>
>>52034218
Bc I like to work at home and I already had my desktop.
Also, why not thrive on that student loan for a bit to study in comfort for about 600 bucks for your whole degree.
Definitely worth imo, since with my degree I sure will get a nice job to pay back all those loans.

I would go with cheap laptop (14" or smaller) and use the computer labs. If you're doing an engineering degree most of the software you need for your projects is only licensed for the lab computers anyway.

that really just depends on the university you go to. if it has all of the software installed, it will handle it better than most laptops.
>>

you actually use super computers during some labs
>>
something with very little weight and a decent battery life
>>
>nice laptop only
Prioritize on weight and batterylife. Then either go cheap or spend a bit more for durability if you really like it.

I don't like tablets; you should be taking notes on paper. Your gaymin pc that you built when you were 15 stays at home. Respect and condolences to the poor niggers that can only use computer labs tho
>>
>>52033226
Dropped mine on the floor 4 times. Still only minor dents. It's a T400 though AKA made before lenovo entered the macbook clone wars.

a laptop with good battery life over most anything else, a screen that is good enough to use standalone.

but any real work should be done connected to an external display

>>
Honestly OP, you don't do any "intensive" computing in college unless you do industrial or mechanical engineering and need to use specific software that you can't even pirate a license for if you wanted.

Get a mobile, durable laptop with good battery life and you'll be set.

You can definitely get by without a laptop, but I'd say having one makes it a lot easier provided you have a minuscule amount of self-control.
>>
>>52033116
nobody contesting this so this is the winner stay mad macfags
>>
>>52033075
I went with the first option, nice gaymen desktop in my dorm and a laptop to carry to uni. The desktop is super comfy to work on when I'm at home, the laptop not so much, so my main problem is to keep the work I do at home and the work I do at uni in sync. Still haven't found a satisfying solution. My advice is to buy a good laptop on which you feel really comfortable working, and then monitor+keyboard+mouse to hook up to when you work at home. Computer labs are pleb tier, they're mostly shit, you can't customise them and you can't carry them around wherever you go.
>>

Google/OneDrive?
>>
iPad Pro?

Best notebook ive used so far
>>
Cheap laptop (currently I don't have one, searching for it in another thread) for mobility
Desktop I built (fx6350, gtx 650ti, 8gb) for heavy tasks
Art student, heavy tasks are video editing and various rendering, muh games when I have time (rarely)
>>
>>52036980
That's what I did until I stopped using Windows, but it was shit for managing code anyway. Merging is pure horror.

desu bought a used MacBook for my second year and it's miles better than the memetech the other CS students use.

a desktop at home

>>

This is the best option, i got the 128Gb one with the pen and the keyboard for like 1500 dollars, totally worth it, its like a super computer, its 3 times as powerfull as my PS4 and the gpu is better than even a titan X sli

You see a mix, mainly depending on the class. For example in my physics class most people don't take notes since the teacher posts GOAT lecture notes every day. But in my circuitry class most kids use pen and paper since its easy to draw the diagrams and a couple of kids use circuit design software to take notes on their laptops (they make the circuits in the software and screenshot). There is one kid that uses a full on laptop + digitizer pad thing combo but I don't think it works well since he's always asking the professor questions about something from a couple minutes ago. I don't really know about the non-STEM classes since I got most of my intro courses waved because of APs in highschool (and since I'm a Physics major I don't need more than the intro level for most of my non-STEM courses).
>>
>>52037452

My god, have people started calling everything a "tablet" nowadays, just how everything is an "application"? Jesus fuck, Apple's got this world by the balls.
>>
>>52033075
cheap laptop
that's it
>>
>>52037899
It was always applications. Now it's "apps". Get it right, you're embarrassing yourself.
>>
>>52037985
Bah, it's the same horse shit. "app" is short for "application" anyway. Point being, I'm getting sick and tired of all these fucking normies dumbing everything down.
>>
>>52033704
I use a desktop and a thinkpad, and yeah it kinda sucks having to move all the desktop shit around, but seriously how often do you need to do it? Also, how big a deal is it to move it?

Having a desktop in college is great to do anything more "heavy", while having a laptop is great for doing work literally anywhere else other than your room
>>
>>52033684
College isn't real life anon. It's just a more mature step above high school.
