I have, I've had them lock my account when my card expired and they still tried to charge it (android market). Fortunately it was a Google Apps account (free account) so I could host my email elsewhere, but I can only imagine how fucked the average user would have been. This happened this time a few years ago - right in the middle of my university applications. I would have probably been completely fucked if it was a gmail address.
I advise everyone to get their own domain for email, it's cheap ($10/yr, use Yandex or somebody else to host), it looks professional, and best of all, YOU control it.
