Alright guys, let's see if you can settle this.

I'm defragging my hard drive and some friend of mine is telling me it's actually bad for it.

I say it's OK because defragging is only bad if you do it on a SSD (I have a HDD).

Who is right about this?
>>
It's not bad for HDD if you do it once a month or once a week. If you do it more than once a week than it's bad.
>>
bad for ssds, unnecessary if you are using linux but good if you are using windows

I thought windows did this automatically in the background since vista
>>
defragging your HDD is bad because it means you're using windows

It has, why do people like OP still use XP? It's not old enough to be novelty like it's predecessor operating systems.

Why? Mechanical wear?

Yeah, basically. I mean it's made to be used but using something more than you have to is just wasting it's lifespan.

If you're defragging when the fragmentation isn't slowing down your PC then you're defragging for no gain. You might as well write and erase files random over and over again for no reason.

I defrag daily with my 2TB HDD. No fucks giving never have any issues, also... I make daily back ups on several external HDDs.. So playing it safe just in case. So far 0's all around GOOD, no issues. Though I'm switching to SDD when I build my next pc next year. GG I guess... And its a seagate for those who care. WD / Seagate all work fine for me only thing that ever failed me was a hitachi and a GPU...

I defrag daily. Helps refresh sectors especially on older less used data, and helps detect bad sectors.

Just set it to run on idle and stop when the machine ceases to be idle.
