Old netbook used as a home server. Actually pretty good.
>>
>>52030268
not him but spare old android phones make great little servers

- small
- low power
- no noise
- will run tons of gnu/linux software natively with a chroot
- integrated UPS

similar reasons to use an old laptop, really, only even smaller and quieter (and likely also less powerful, but that's not always a problem)
>>

How do you even get Debian onto a phone?

Please share. I've tried before, a year ago on an outdated Samsung, and I just ended up bricking it. No harm done, I just thre it away, but if getting a standard Linux distro onto a phone is easier now, I'd like to know.

Have you got some rooted device first? Or just go on file system and trying those commands?

Is there any tutorial online?
>>
>>52031336
Right now it runs 3 seedboxes for me and my friends, it runs a Hentai at Home client (because damn there are some funny western ones), a webserver, and a couple miscellaneous items.

It's also got 2x /28's of IPs and is on unmetered gigabit.

I work at a datacenter so the hardware is mine and the network connectivity freeeeee!
>>
>>
>>52031372
it's the same as a regular chroot, you need root, yes
there's probably tutorials for it, but i was already familiar with linux when i went to try it
>>
>>52031380
Forgot picture.
>>
>>52031396
You don't need root for a chroot actually! That's why it's so neat. You only need root to give your chroot access to the hardware as root.
>>
>>52031411
you sure? even if so (fakeroot?) i can't imagine it'd be too useful, due to the mentioned fact that you won't have access to everything without root
>>
Guess, I should update this.
>>
>>52031450
It just means you have to run your services on ports above 1024. You also can't directly access some things in /dev/. But you can access everything that you own in the chroot, just not things that are bound to real root devices outside the chroot.

When you chroot, let's say in mnt, you'll have binds like so:
/dev/ => /mnt/dev/
/proc/ => /mnt/proc/
/sys/ => /mnt/sys/

So you can't touch things there that require root, and you can't bind under port 1024 or ports already in use by the system. But that's about it for the basic limitations. Go nuts!

Can you give me some insight? I bought one recently, and I'm still waiting for it to arrive.
>>
>>52031498
>When you chroot, let's say in mnt, you'll have binds like so:

It's safer to mount stuff twice

chroot first, then
mount proc -t proc proc/
mount udev -t devtmpfs dev/
mount sysfs -t sysfs sys/
some systems need:
mount devpts -t devpts dev/pts
mount tmpfs -t tmpfs /dev/shm

basement. Didn't really want to have to pay out the ass for someone to host a server for me. It's all I need *shrugs*

>>

It's for me and me alone. It might host a plaintext copy of my resume on the website. But that's about it. Planning on doing a lot of stuff with it too. And it's always nice to have a Linux environment when I'm stuck at work.

Also I use it as an ssh tunnel so I can get by the proxy at work.
>>
>>52031918
Well, are you satisfied with your purchase? And what about the onboard wifi? Is it any good?
>>
>>52031936
The PC doesn't have WiFi, I use ethernet

And I am satisfied. It werkz fine. Underclocked the CPU to 1.2 (from 1.5) and it's running cooler now.

Run it for torrents (Deluged) and other simple shit
>>
>>52031949
Sweet, thanks. Waiting on mine, should come in 2 or 3 weeks... I'll just use it for some httpd, irc and perhaps a low budget seedbox.
