Why are DIPs so cute?
Cuz they look like little bugs
>>52023225
This isn't supposed to look as lewd as I see it as is it...

same here... I'm afraid that years of 4chan and manga has permanently warped my mind.

555 timer
Most 8 pin DIPs are 555 timers
>>52025594
Fairly certain this came from a page about the LM741 OP AMP
>>52025772
Its actually a joke (could be called meme i guess?) that since 555 timers have so many darn uses and projects surrounding it, most 8 pin DIPs are 555

its been ages since i last saw a SIP IC. The last SIP i saw was in my old PS1's power supply

I suppose

older you say?
try these 70s mil spec russian LED panels in a DIP6. gold plated because military.
>>52027128
more very early red russian LEDs, metal package because they're mil spec. gallium arsenide so not super bright but still pretty.
>>52027147
or try these VFD display tubes (I've about 15 different types, some can do many colours or graphics, some have many letters, some are about 20mm high. these are very cheap, under a dollar each for the common types.
>>52027112
there's a chinese seller currently selling pulls of the original HPDE panels with the built in drivers. there's clones of the red bubble ones on spark fun. the red LEDs are very cheap from sellers in russia/ukraine. the tubes come from russia, tubes-store.com has a good selection of them, look under display tubes and they have VFD / numitron / nixie.
if anyone wants to see more tubes, ask :D

both! they're easy to use, super cheap if you can find them, and everyone loves the retro charm. the tubes are the best but old LEDs look amazing in any project, and they're sort of hard to kill due to the chemistry they use. the tubes are even more hardy, I've only ever killed one by literally dropping it.
>>52027564
these are IV-27M, multi segment VFD tubes. a red hot wire glows over the top, and a voltage pulls the electrons down onto a phosphor which makes them glow brightly blue. very very fine metalwork inside.
>>52028075
close up of the grid (control) and plates (covered in phosphor), the heater cathode is so fine it's invisible in this photo.
>>52028075
high quality closeup of the wires in a smashed VFD tube of a similar size. seems to be rolled and stamped metal somehow? the datecode is 1960s which is pretty impressive.
>>52028108
No one appreciates hobbyist and deprecated hardware on /g/ It makes me sad that we have threads about fucking phone performance rather than say, 555 uses
single digit tubes come in big
and small
largest is about 5cm, for scale.
>>52023158
It's a MEM you DIP
not all tubes are for displaying numbers!
the right one displays graphs with neon gas, or the dotted one can be lined up with many others to display characters of text.
>>52028125
I'm lurking in this thread, I appreciate it
>>52028156
I know you're saying, but none of these are lit!
here's the small tube from the previous post, you can see the cherry red cathode heater which is bombarding the panel of phosphor to make it fluoresce. most of these tubes are blue/green, but some are red and yellow as well (but I've never seen a tube of this vintage have that).
lets do a 60s unboxing.

A Dragognik'n'co internel pentatrationâ„¢ machine
>>52028202
you know you're on the right track when the manual has a military date stamp on it.
if you didn't guess (and can't read russian), these are geiger muller tubes. this one in particular is good for hard beta and gamma radiation. you put a high voltage over it, and the resistance drops sharply when the gas inside is ionised by radiation passing through.
that's the interesting ones I have to hand, there's also dekatrons, numitrons, all sorts of fun.
>>52028125
That's because everyone's thought of all the uses for 555s in the last millennium.
