Everyone in the office thinks I'm a god damn wizard because I use keyboard shortcuts and can guess how things work.

TFW I get pissed off and i'm not even some autistic sysadmin... Just a structural design engineer. I bet most of you sperglords chimp out on a regular basis.

This. Slack has improved my work-life.

Worst part of being an engineer are the idiots I know constantly asking you to fix shit like I'm a mechanic/handyman
>Anon, can you fix my lawn mower for me?
>Anon my car is making funny sounds, can you look at it?
>Anon can you wire my TV to get all the cable channels?

It is ridiculous.
>>
>>52022444
OP here.

I get that all the fucking time.

>anon my fan heater doesn't work anymore
>my laptop is really hot
>my kettle makes a funny sound

The worst thing is that I enjoy fucking around with electronics and mechanical shit so I can do it 7 times out of 10.

It's still super irritating though.

Heh, my best friend is an Electrical Engineer. We work together on a lot of projects in our spare time (repairing small engines, remodeling one of our houses, building a meat smoker, welding shit up... all sorts of stuff). Whenever we reach a problem that we've never dealt with before, just to piss him of, I'll say, "You're an engineer, why don't you engineer us up a solution for this problem." It's kind of an inside joke at this point.
>>
>>52022512
These are the kinds of things people should be able to do themselves. It's really sad to see how reliant some people have become on others.

I was watching King of the Hill the other day; Hank and his friends are always working on projects together and love it. More people need to be like that and take pride in their own work.
I mean, we live in an age where you can easily access ever fucking piece of information imaginable.
>>
>>52023205
We also live in an age of instant coffee, cans of beans with mini sausages, tv remotes and internet porn.

People are fucking dumb and too specialised. They clog their brains with so much shit that they don't know how to do basic things.

I had an argument with my girlfriend the other day because she wanted me to go shopping while I was working on my 3D printer. I have enough clothes, but apparently the colours are boring.

Shit like the fucking number of different shades of pink in your closet is unnecessary mental load that people indulge in for dozens of hours a year.... yet they don't have time to reflash their phones or learn to google simple problems.
>>
Never offer to help someone fix their computer. Oh dear sweet miserable fuck, don't. I'd sooner offer to clean a chimp exhibit with the chimps still inside.

There are people that will click everything. Dozens of toolbars. No sense of tact. 100% rube. You will see what they expect you to fix and suddenly support a policy of eugenics.

Nice trips

I get asked by my HR how to use Windows because it's not Apple

She couldn't move the chrome window to the next screen

>her computer doesn't turn on when the power button is pressed
>he cord came loose over time or someone tripped on the cord

>which printer is ours?!
>should I connect the USB?

>boss buys an external HDD
>doesn't work
>just needs to be formatted to be Mac friendly

But there are some nice things
>we need more ram!
>get paid to take time shopping for ram

OP here again.

You reminded me:

>hey anon I have a problem with X analysis package
>it keeps telling me something about memory or something
>no I didn't keep a screenshot of the error
>I just clicked ok and the program crashed
>ok....
>Go over to help
>ask them to recreate the problem
>click click click on random shit at the speed of light for 10 mins
>talking all the way through
>runs the analysis
>dynamic analysis for a steel frame, takes a good 6mins to crunch all the numbers
>error comes up
>doesn't read
>clicks ok at the speed of sound
>see anon, it just crashes and it didn't even give a reason

motherfucker wasted 15 mins of my time.

I really need to stop helping people.
>>
>>52023458
>error message pops up
>doesn't bother to read it, just clicks OK

this triggers me... literally all you have to do 99% of the time is copy & paste the text in the error message into google for a solution.

Two of my mates are carpenters and they asked me what shink and creep were because they'd only ever beer taught to mix high slump cement with water retardants.
They also try and quiz me on why there they need to use steel in large homes, how forces act through roof trusses, how frames are assembled, timber seasoning... The list goes on. They think that engies don't deserve the pay because they "risk their bodies" during the build but fuck they're retarded.
Literally, one is so dyslexic that he's been banned from sawing or placing frames cause he can't read a tape measure. Now he's a glorified labourer only cause he's about as big as an ox.
>>
>>52023449
Fuck, dont even get me started on that. I was touching up some drafts the other day and someone asked me why I didn't use paint or photoshop.
They saw the tower and asked why the office would pay so much for my computer...
>mfw it cost about as much as their fucking imacs.

top kek

Sorry /g/ but I need to rant - retarded concractors on site make me worry for the safety of anyone occupying any building. Shit can literally collapse instantly if they fuck it up.

OP here - You would not believe the shit I see
>steelwork connections tack welded on site
>stability connections with 4No. M12 bolts
>two guys mixing concrete for columns in the abandoned lot next door to site 90% sand 1% cement and 5 bits of aggregate

Even the large contractors are bad.
>design RC shear core and shear walls on 3 building development
>come to site regularly for meetings
>RC frame goes up fast
NOTE: Site work Quality Assurance is the job of the site manager and contractor, not designers.
>notice one day on site that the rebar spacers are all plastic track fuckers that pop out as soon as you add concrete
>rebar flails all over the place
>closely inspect one of the shear walls
>spec'd it with 15 B20 Bars each face
>bars are in the middle of the wall
>minor axis wall capacity literally nil
>mfw this is the 8th Floor

Also dealing with about 3 large steel frames where the steelwork subcontractor used non-CE marked steelwork... literally illegal.

If any of you techies are wondering by the way.

Discovery of incorrect rebar placement in an 8th floor shear wall means the contractor needs to provide proof that all the reinforcement for the frame below is correct....if it isn't, they knock it down and rebuild.

This kills the construction company.

Probably my favourite story would be one my wife told me. Her cousin is a landscaper and during a christmas party they did the "cement mixer challenge".
>Sit ass in a cement mixer
>Someone else spins it
>He was last so his boss decided to be retarded
>Turned speed up to 11
>Broke C7 vertebrae in his spine
>Somehow not paralysed but now needs a neck brace for 3 months.

But speaking of cement mixers, you're right on; these people are fucking stupid with ratios.
I remember one time a financial manager who had been in the business for years asked why we needed to use CLT because it cost so much more.
