6300 is all you need for satisfactory gaming, 980 ti's render the game details taking care of that. two ssd's one for page file other for OS. 1 TB hard drive for all your photos or MP3s. smaller case the better, atx case for enough ram slots for 32 GB ram for vms.

I have a overclocked fx6300 and I can tell you that it's working well so far. But with a $3000, I'm pretty sure he can afford a fx8350 or an unlocked i5.
