Hey guys,

looking to discuss ideas and things that can be done to bring this idle temp down. Bought my rig in mid november, got a MSI R9 390 Twin Frozr which was recommended to me by a bunch of people. This thing idles at 63*C on web browsing. I try to set up custom fan curves and it doesn't, Afterburner says it is running at 16% fan power. This is horseshit. What do you guys do it fix it?
>>

>What do you guys do it fix it?
My temps went down when I bought a Sapphire 390 op.
>>
Don't know what to tell you OP.

My MSI 390x idles at 28c, hovers in the low 30s when browsing the internet or watching video, and that's with the fan at 10-20%.

It hasn't even broke 60c under load.
>>
>>52017056
Only sapphire has good cards for AMD. Everyone else just takes their Nvidia design and put it 1:1 on an AMD card. Obviously not a good idea
>>
>>52017276
Powercolor also only makes AMD cards, so their coolers are very effective.
>>
>>52017056

furmark at 75* C on 1080P
>>
>>52017056
Did you change the fan curve at all? I have an MSI R9 380 and the default curve will let the thing idle at 61 C, which is not harmful at all but can be kept cooler by adjusting the fan curve. If you crank the fans up to 100%, what happens?

Do you even know what you are doing?
>>
>>52017056
Fan doesn't spin up when you change it? Maybe its a defective model.
>>
>>52017276
MSI uses their own cooler and PCBs

>>52017056
OP is afterburner installed? You can set and tweek the fan profiles
>>
Don't have a 3xx but have a 270. Had same problem, realized that my system had shitty airflow. Added two fans, it rarely breaks 40c under heavy loads. Usually about 20-25c
>>
>>52018046
I was going to say this. A lot of people on here assume Shitty card or ShittyDrivers then start blaming the manufacturer. Google whats the avrage temp of your card then try fan profiles and case airflow.
>>
Replace the thermal compound. Make it as thin as possible.

Improve case airflow.

Doesn't the fan turn off at idle on 3xx cards until a certain temp?
>>
>>52019747
For most of them it turns off until it hits 60° or something, I think.
>>
>>52017056
OP here. Deleted MSI Gaming APP and have my GPU idling at 54*C. In contrast to my CPU (at a steady sub 30*C when idling and has been as low as 18C or so.) it is "high", but that goes with being said I am liquid cooling my CPU with the h100i GTX cooler.

Underload playing fallout4 or withcher3 it doesnt crack 62*C
>>
>>52017276
As much shit as the brand gets, my XFX 280 idles at 25 degrees. The highest it's ever gotten is 65 under load, but I also have a case with pretty good air flow.
>>
>>52020022
GPUs always idle hotter than CPUs unless you deside to turn the fans up to full blast. For a 290(X)/390(X) 54° is perfectly normal, they won't even throttle up to 95°.

>>
>>52017056
Open both sides of your case and see whether the temp drops, or increase the case's airflow
>>
>>52020092
>Asus 290(X)/390(X)
Literally the worst non-reference card. You made a mistake, bro.
>>
>>52020118
Gives me more of a reason to upgrade to a Fury ASAP, I guess.
>>
>>52020115
my airflow is pretty good I think, in my 500R case I have:
>2 front fans x 120mm each intake
>1 side fan x 200mm intake
>1 bottom fan x 120mm intake
>2 top fans for my h100i GTX radiator exhausting 2 x 120mm
>1 rear fan x 120mm

Everything else remains cool, I just think its a spicy card.
>>
>>52017056
Does anyone have the power color devil hybrid? Are power color cards any count?
>>
>>52020134
Just go with Sapphire, Powercolor or MSI next time. I'm pretty sure MSI has dedicated coolers for AMD and Powercolor/Sapphire are AMD-only brands. Gigabyte also has specialized AMD coolers but their cards are voltage locked for some reason, and loud because they decided to go with a dual-fan cooler instead of a triple-fan design like on their GTX 980Ti/980/970.
>>
So guys, how is the Gigabyte r9 390 ?
>>
>>52021516
Voltage locked and loud. Grab a Sapphire, Powercolor or MSI card instead.
>>
so is a 380 a good value or what
>>
>>52021588
save up another 100 and get a 390
>>
>>52021994
why did you make that choice what is the advantage? certain games? resolutions?
>>
Is the Sapphire r9 390 ($325) worth the extra $30 over the Powercolor PCS+ ($295)?
>>
Idling at 38c here with fans not spinnan

Same card.
>>
>>52022048
Just get whichever you think looks better.
>>
Friend just built a pc with an msi 390, idles at 26c. My sapphire 390x idles at 29. Clean your case filters or something holy shit.
>>
>>52022044

The advantage is that its actually a good card that will run things.
>>
>>52022109
What cases do you guys have?
>>
>>52022244
H440 with 3 120m noctuas in front, single rear 140 and two 120s top exit/radiator.

Not a case known for its airflow but I think all those people that say it runs hot are crazy.
>>
>>52022133
people say 380 can run 1080 on high settings most games
>>
>>52022414
That's also said about 960s. It isn't true. 30fps doesn't count as running.

>>52022414

The 380 outright murders the 960. Generally speaking for 1080p and 1440p gaming with an upper framerate of 60fps (i.e you don't have a 144hz screen) AMD kills Nvidia at every price point.
>>
>>52022414
Do you want to look like some kind of broke faggot?

>Yeah I have a midrange video card, please rape my face
>>
>>52017056
>idles at 63C
Nice

I almost feel good again with my 7970 idling at 50C

Then again, I heard that cards run hotter with multiple monitors, even in idle.
One of them being 4K probably doesn't improve the situation

I never get above 65-70C whilst gaymen tho, so I guess that's alright
>>
>>52022469
i am broke though :<
>>
>>52022473
120hz will also do it, since the memory won't downclock on idle.

Mine sometimes will clock down to 150mhz and other times it will sit at 1500 and be hot. Doesn't make sense.

Go back to reddit. This goes for anyone who uses words like destroys, murders, annihilates etc. when comparing GPUs.

>Caring about idle temps
60° is normal in multi monitor use. By trying to reduce it you are only wearing your fans out sooner. Most retarded thing you could do.
>>
>>52022520
That's an Nvidia Maxwell bug.
R9 390 clocks down normally on 120/144Hz
>>
>falling for AMD meme
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha, he fell for the AMD meme, just killyourself man, hahahhahahaha. Dude I can't believe how many of you cucks are now running their fans at 100% to keep their cards from melting. Hahahahahaha.
>mfw my 970 idles at 30°-35°C and 68°C at full load. Hahaha
Hahahahahahahahhaa
Hahahahahahahahahaha

Ooh I'm dying, ooh I'm dying

I've got a 390x and it still happens to me.
