so I'm about to buy into the /g/ meme and install xubuntu on my laptop
1) what are the odds of getting all the drivers working and being able to run my computer like on windows? i.e. no crashes, forced 480x640 resolutions, trackpad not working etc
(I have an anus tp300la)
2) how often will I have to reinstall the OS?
3) are my privacy gains going to materialise? is xubuntu a goy distro?
Try A live version first

if the computer is less than 5 years old, you're probably fine, at least on Ubuntu. If something doesn't work its probably under the additional drivers menu.
>>52016233
already did and it seemed fine
I've heard battery management is an issue. is that still the case in the newer kernels?

>1) what are the odds of getting all the drivers working and being able to run my computer like on windows? i.e. no crashes, forced 480x640 resolutions, trackpad not working etc
As long as you don't have some stupid super obscure hardware, you'll be mostly fine out of the box.
>2) how often will I have to reinstall the OS?
About as often as you break it beyond repair.
3) are my privacy gains going to materialise? is xubuntu a goy distro?
Xubuntu is a good distro. It doesn't steal all of your datas. Some people parrot that Ubuntu has "m-muh amazon botnet", but this only applies to its own Unity desktop environment.
>>52016221
You'll be fine. XFCE is a bit old tho. Consider MATE or GNOME.
>>52016279
>a bit old tho
what does that even mean
>>52016349
Basically it means it's been around for almost 20 years and updates are lazy. It's not hard to break and you may have compatibility issues.
MATE is pretty much the same feel as XFCE but w/o those issues. GNOME is the same but "prettier".

I hate how xfce volume works. If I raise the volume for a video that I am watching on youtube it raises the volume for Spotify. If I want to use the speakers instead of the headset the volume keys only raise the volume for the headset and not the speakers that are in use.

1) if u dont have nvidia on intel graphics and the wifi will work then you are fine
2) if u dont add many ppa: repos for programs that have shittons of dependencies , u wont have to unless you want to upgrade to newer version
3)well you will gain no privacy if u use traditional botnet internet services, on the os side u are safe from viruses if u only install shit from official repositories and dont use executables from the interweebs
welp, it mucked up when checking the disc integrity.
I tried with a different disc and also with ubuntu and it still said the the disc had errors so I'm going to abandon ship.
Thanks for the replies though!

>the odds of getting all the drivers working and being able to run my computer like on windows?
Pretty high
>reinstall the OS
Six months apparently
>xubuntu a goy distro?
Probably not
Bonux points: Pre configured Xfce
>>52019172
6 months for regular edition, 5 years for LTS.
>>52016279
old? Xfce 4.12 released Feb-28-2015. age doesn't matter if it's being updated.
and OP if you're new to linux, yea go with xbuntu
>>52019172
Can you stop posting this picture everywhere? It doesn't look particularly good.
Can I still use programs like ms powerpoint and ms word if I download xubuntu on my school laptop?
>>52021036
No, but you can use libreoffice (they have a Windows version as well) and you can open and create the same type of files. It is much better, easier to use and can do more than ms office.
>>52021036
Why on earth would you want to do that?
>>52021081
I need PP and word for schoolstuff.
>>52021211
Just use libreoffice. Nothing pp and word does that libreoffice can't. Just try the windows version of libreoffice
>1) what are the odds of getting all the drivers working and being able to run my computer like on windows? i.e. no crashes, forced 480x640 resolutions, trackpad not working etc
Pretty good. Never had an issue with Xubuntu failing to recognize my hardware.
>2) how often will I have to reinstall the OS?
Every few years if you stick with a LTS release.
>3) are my privacy gains going to materialise? is xubuntu a goy distro?
Xubuntu comes with the XFCE desktop environment. Unlike Unity, it will never steal from you, lie to you, or sell you out. Also, the mascot is cute. CUTE!
>>52016221
Install 14.04, don't even dare to look at newer ones. non-LTS versions of any Ubuntu derivatives usually suck balls and are more of a beta versions than stable releases. 14.04 just werks.
>>52021314
That is the dumbest shit I have ever heard. LTS versions only make sense if you are running a server. Why run ancient software on a normal desktop?
>>52021373
>Ubuntu LTS
>ancient software
Good one newfriend.
>>52016221
>1)
Hardware drivers? Yep probably. Will they work correctly? Good chance they wont, if you have a razer mouse you'll need to manually write a script to decelerate it. Only a Google away really.
Will it play all your games? No. Do everything from the software manager too and you should be fine though.
>2)
Things will break the desktop environment if you end up trying to rice stuff. If you're not interested in doing that you should be fine.
>3)
Privacy gains? wtf are you talking about? i do this so I can basically be familiar with Linux systems, and thus web servers/sys admin shit
>>52016987
set 'flat-volumes' to 'no' in your pulseaudio config and you should be good to go
>>52016221
I installed latest Ubuntu on an old Sony Vaio I had around.
Everything worked out of the box, even the function buttons on the keyboard that I could never make work with Windows 7 and 8, those buttons only ever worked with the original rescue OS (W7 Home).
The laptop iself has shitty Pentium Processor. Intel Graphics and 2GB of RAM, despite this it runs great on Gnome 3 wich is supposedly a bloated DE.
xfce is love / life / etc

The best thing about Linux is that it keeps you warm in the winter.
