I only understand the basic and use it as a text editor.

I use acme, the _integrating_ development environment

yes. emacs. i don't use it for anything other than editing.
>>52005923

i used to use emcas like that until i started getting into lisp.

Yes, Emacs.
I wouldn't say that I use it as an OS, although I use for a lot of text based operations like batch file renaming and IRC chatting.

my "IDE"
is tmux + vim + gcc + gdb + valgrind + man + git

emacs lisp as a tool for writing extensions is the only reason i continue to use emacs as an editor.

I tried using emacs as an AIO environment on OS X.
EMMS for music and video
Org-mode for notes and reminders
doc-view for pdf's
(image)dired for file management
mu4e for email
elfeed for rss
Etc. Etc.
Emacs can do it all. Just not very well. Sure you can whip up a hack when there are no options, but it is either an ugly alternative or a time consuming affair. After about 2 months I gave up and moved to greener pastures.
Emacs is not particularly good. What is good about emacs however are the key binds.
Intellij idea with emacs binds is goat
