Too late for that now, already got a 980 a few months ago, 4GB HBM1 r9 fury is not much of a leap in performance when overclocked. I'll wait for arctic islands to come out and see who fairs better at DX12, 4K, and VR.
I doubt pascal and arctic islands would be sufficient for 4k 60fps on a single GPU, which is approximately the level 2160x1200 VR requires as the image is rendered at 1.4x the size before being distorted which comes close to 4K resolution.
The problem currently is that most traditional optimization tricks don't work so it is mostly down to brute force to get the job done. There are a few techniques in the works like foveated rendering, multi resolution shading, and timewarp to bump the frame rate up.
My 980 should be enough to dip my toes in VR for now as recommended spec was 970/290. Most devs will adhere to that spec for a while to come otherwise they suffer becoming a niche of a niche since there aren't many users to begin with who have the highest end flagships and multiGPU setups.
Of course they can have settings that scale higher requiring beefier hardware, though the base line at which the games will be optimized around will most likely be the recommended spec until GPU price performance and adoption at mid range improves drastically in the coming years.
I'll give myself 2 years to upgrade, that should be plenty enough time for the dust to settle and standards to start emerging.

It's not great but it worked for me for like a year with my old WoW guild. Given the intense amount of audio compression you expect over something like skype or google hangouts it's almost impossible to tell it was actively modulated.

That's exactly what I'm doing and it's working very well. By pretending interactions I've been in love and felt loved for last 3 years and it feels great.
