Actually, I but laptops that click shut. I had an older Asus and every time I dropped something inside my laptop bag besides my laptop it would work itself between my laptop screen and keyboard just from walking around carrying my bag. It would damage both the screen and my keys.

My current laptop latches shut and I haven't had a problem since.

One of many little details that faggots think are irrelevant in and of itself, but in aggregate with lots of other little details make for a great product.

You may think, "I have to use both hands to open the laptop? No big deal." Repeat that dozens if not hundreds of times across the machine, and you're left with a laptop that truly is "no big deal," if not full of compromises.

But it's not that at all. I was one of the guys laughing at how terrible going for muh thin and a SoC design was for the Macbook but I'll be first to admit that the hinges on Macbooks feel great. It's enough pressure to glide when opened but not enough to open on its own.
>>
>>52002647
I wish global rule 3 was enforced more. Oh well.
>>
>>52003391
Laptops shouldn't need to be pried open with two hands. You don't need to be a laptop owner to get this either.
>>
>>52003399
>It's enough pressure to glide when opened but not enough to open on its own.
Which means it's right at the point where any form of wear, which it will gather when used, will cause it to open on it's own, while the Dell won't.

Also the Dell will keep it's position while open better when you're using the laptop on something that is moving or gets lightly bumped.

Could very well be that I've just had terrible luck with hinges but I've had to repair every laptop I've had since 2005 when I got that Acer. Then is 2007/2008 with Dell, and then in 2012 when I got a CR48. Currently using a Toshiba which has been fine alright so far.

every single fucking dell laptop i've bought has had hinge problems. _every_ single one. the plastic hinge cover cracks, the screen bezel cracks due to the pressure the hinge exerts on it, the metal screen mounting hinge detaches, just the same old bullshit every time.

i finally got an aluminum macbook pro in 2009 and have used that same laptop since then. no hinge problems, no cracking/creaking plastic bullshit, no matter how i open and close the screen it just works. apple must have a patent on this type of hinge or something because dell is stupid not to use it.

Is there a reason why you're trying to not use the other 4 fingers for no good reason?

Lifting with one finger adds extra stress to that finger and could strain it over time.

Also the macbook has tons of different issues including massive throttling if you do anything outside of facebook/4chan browse (aka: not someone who wastes a grand on a webbrowser)

If a laptop could close itself and leave zero clearance between the display and the keyboard, how would you open it?
That same amount of force you apply to it when you open it can also be taken advantage of by a stray object inserting itself into your laptop without your knowledge.
That's what locking mechanisms are for
>>
>>52002482
Why does this even matter. What kind of massive faggot do you have to be to buy a laptop based on the fact that it opens with one finger?

>wastes a grand on a webbrowser

i've actually saved money by buying a mac and sticking with the thing for 7 years.

each dell i bought was about the same cost as a macbook pro, and i had to buy a new laptop when they'd inevitably fall apart or fail irreparably. i wasn't exactly buying dell's bottom-of-the-barrel garbage laptops.
>>
>>52005227
>has bad experience with dell
>keeps buying dell

very logical. my one thinkpad is still operating just fine and is close to a decade old.

Maybe it's because I don't abuse my hardware, or maybe its because I don't buy from shitty companies.
>>
>>52005227
>he goes out in public with an obsolete macbook
haha
everyone around you pretty much assumes you're dirt poor and you bought that thing used

apple is a status symbol brand, you don't buy it if you need a functional computer, you buy apple to show off that you can afford to buy a $1200 computer every year.
>>
>>52005281
i go out in public with my new iphone, duh.
>>
>>52005281
Pretty much every ultrabook style laptop are for status bragging.

Business laptops are for people who actually care about cost/performance

And chromebooks are for people who own dedicated servers to ssh into for computation when needed.
>>
>>52005176
It doesn't, that's the whole point of this thread
>>
>>52005171
>If a laptop could close itself and leave zero clearance between the display and the keyboard, how would you open it?
What are bevels and cutouts? What just about every fucking laptop on the market features, latched or not.

Unless you throw your laptop into a giant duffel bag, able to roll around with inches of clearance in all directions,, there's little chance of shit wedging your laptop open. You're more likely to get your screen etched from rubbing against the keycaps constantly.
Only the Surfacebook is really at risk of shit getting in because it has a big gaping hole by design.

It would be way smaller if they did that. It's just making fun of how fat the bezels look on Macbooks compared to the Dell which is sexy as fuk

You're like the 5th person to post this shit about Thinkpads and this will be like the 5th time someone has to point out that any heavy laptop doesn't have this issue. It's only Ultrabooks. Show me a video of a Carbon X1 doing it.

wait ultrabooks are not lightweight if you're talking about performance/resources
>>
>>52004929
You mean Canon?
>>
>>52006102
Why would you get something heavier unless you need more ports or power? The difference between a Ultrabook and a full size is going to be that and battery life but since I'm only using it for docs battery isn't an issue since it's just sipping power.
>>
>>52005344
>Business laptops are for people who actually care about cost/performance
No, Business laptops are more expensive when it comes to cost/performance than any other type of laptop. Unless of course you mean Used Business laptops.
>>
>>52003245
Nigger there's a difference between a strong and a stiff hinge.
Macbook hinges have been based for the last 5 or so years, over time they don't slacken, they don't pull out of their cases, yada yada.

Stiff hinges have a tenancy to put stress on the (usually plastic) housing where the hinge is screwed in.
They end up snapping like twigs.

i've had the xps 13 since june this year and here's an honest review of it:

>fantastic design. amazingly small. infinity display is really really good.
>hinge may be a little too stiff and sometimes cracks
>speakers are good but with high volume sometimes buzz
>updated from windows 8 to 10 and had a load of problems but clean installing fixed them all, runs like a dream now
>touchpad issues are not as bad as people make out, but not being able to customise gestures is dogshit. Dell's fault for not using a synaptics touchpad and microsoft's for not allowing you to in windows 10
>dust does get trapped in the edges of the screen and mine is very very slightly not in line with the bezel.

It's not that. The Dell has a stiffer hinge because it has a touchscreen. It means less wobble when poking the screen. Apple doesn't have that so they can keep their hinges loose and still keep them good. Just difference because of a feature in one, and a lack thereof in the other.
>>
>>52008726
Not really, the hinges in MacBooks are usually fairly stiff.
