Just downloaded ubuntu, how do you linux fags deal with this shit. Installing java is like hacking into the Pentagon and it craps out everything I try to change a theme
>>
You're supposed to write your own java module, retard.

apt-get install openjdk-7-jre -y

so hard :3

I use Trisquel and I think it came with OpenJDK installed. Honestly, aside from package manager APT being garbage and the kernel panicking for no reason sometimes, it's pretty nice.
>>
>>52001558
sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jdk

Don't get me started on how much fun adding path to jave to system path is on Windows. As far as the theme goes, thank Gnome devs for that. Grab Numix or Vertex or Advaita I guess, those work as they should.

i like the radiance theme but the font of unfocused windows looks way too crappy
>>

You can change the font with unity tweak tool.

sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool

No OP, that is just how Ubuntu is. Pick up a copy of arch or gentoo

My phone runs Ubuntu touch
Just to add a custom ringtone you need to open the terminal and write the code to copy and paste the file to the appropriate directory

Wow so much better than just downloading a self-extracting package from the software's downloads page...
>>
>>52003322
some other distros can do

$ search java

and see instant output of available packages
apt prolly does that too but idk apt
>>
Is there any specific reason you chose ubuntu as opposed to xubuntu or kubuntu?
>>
>>52003465
I'd use xubuntu. was always my fav. easy to change layout etc as well.
>>

sudo apt-cache search java

>>
>>52003322
You do understand that ubuntu have bash-completion enabled by default, if you wanna "guess" or you can, you know, just use apt-cache search? Don't bother answering, download another self-extracting package, if that is what you want. Don't forget to install in somewhere not in /opt and /usr/local, and have a nice day.
>>
>>52003322
>from the software's downloads page
This is basically the same as looking up package names

You could argue that having to go through download mirrors where you have to solve captchas and wait a minute to download your "e z self installing" program is more of a hassle than just looking it up the package name and type in a simple command in the terminal and look at it go

Linux is only actually good for servers.

Its not daily normie use OS, stop thibking that and just get Wangows

Holly shit man!

open ~/.bashrc file
add
export PATH=$PATH:"something
at the end of it

tell me how it's easier than that in windows. Just to find where to modify the path isn't intuitive
>>
>>52003558
apt search java
it's faster
or you can also
aptitude search java
both are better than apt-cache apt-get

I tried to install Trisquel on my thinkpad once, you can't get the wireless working if you're on propitiatory shit can you?
>>
>>52006000
Alright, but you probably should write

apt search java | more
>>
>>52006121
why not less ?
>>

>Its not daily normie use OS

Yes it is, it is GREAT for daily normie use. it is the perfect OS for old grannies and people who just surf the internet, read email and write a doc now and then. Much easier, less hassle, near no chance of any viruses or messing up, no forced updates and so on. it is better to use than Apple or Windows for normies who don't game, use CAD software or Adobe.

do you even lurk /g/?

Nobody here recommends Ubuntu. You have to go for the other *buntus (ideally Kubuntu) or Mint.

If you don't want to learn and just want to be a faggot go for Elementary.

Faggot.
>>

>>

actually i don't lurk /g/ (not OP either)

why does /g/ dislike ubuntu? unity? the amazon spyware thing?
>>
>>52009606
that mostly.

but ubuntu is also disliked by a lot of people because it tends to separate itself from the rest of the linux world. think of upstart, Mir and Unity.
